itch.io outages notification

I’ve spent quite a bit of time today trying to upload a new product to itch. Because the site keeps going up and down, butler fails regularly on larger uploads. Nothing is more disheartening that seeing butler fail at the 96.9% mark on a 1GB upload. I also can’t seem to upload images for a devlog nor its cover art.

There needs to be some kind of system IMHO that alerts your devs when your site or any of its helper apps are down. And I don’t mean having to follow itch on Twitter/X because I refuse to let that garbage personal data grabber and ideological hellhole in my life. A simple link that devs could go to to see the site’s current status like some other sites do would be great.

Discord, Twitter, and Bluesky are the only places we post off-site status updates like that. Unfortunately the downtime the other day was unplanned due to a DDOS attack, so there really wouldn’t have been a way to warn you ahead of time. Whenever situations like these happen we try to improve out systems in a way to prevent from from happening in the future.

The site has been under a DDoS attack most day yesterday. Both our admins and the hosting provider worked on it for hours.

I get that. But I think that makes my argument–you shouldn’t have to stop working on defending the site to report that it’s happening. I still don’t know without actually trying it whether things are fixed or not. A simple site that has health meters for the various services that autmoatically update would help a lot.

The problem is that your point is a "suggestion," and you're making it in the "questions" section, which is also answered only by the community (not by staff), and where the moderator is a volunteer community moderator who doesn't work for Itch.

The suggestion section is here:

https://itch.io/board/580406/ideas-feedback

To be fair it does say "staff may monitor this forum" and posting here does offer "idea" and "feedback" tags, and OP's issue is also a technical one.

If staff does not in fact monitor this forum, why are we all reporting bugs and issues here? If not here, where?

Get help from the itch.io community. Have a quick question or issue, other members of the community can assist you in finding an answer. If you need to specifically contact itch.io staff you can message our support team. Although staff may monitor this forum, we request that any account related matters be submitted through our support system.

If you read the posts, the vast majority of people don't come to "report," but rather to seek information.

If you need to officially confirm something, or if you need to be sure you're reporting something to staff, the only safe way to do so is to contact support; all other options are a "maybe" (That is, you run the risk of your message never reaching the staff.)

If you read other posts, you'll see that many responses are, "To report to staff, you should do such and such..."

Just because other people try to contact staff here doesn't mean that staff will actually come and read it here; that's a fallacy.

The admin sometimes reads and responds to one or another thread, but if you check, the vast majority of posts are never answered by the admin, and they almost certainly don't read them.

If the admin does read the suggestions, what do you think is most feasible?
Should he read the suggestions section, or should he start reviewing hundreds of posts with questions he didn't read at the time, to see if a suggestion pops up?

Now, maybe Leafo comes along and says he does read all the posts. As far as I can remember, I've never read anything like that, but it's possible. In that case, it won't matter where you make the suggestion. But in the absence of that confirmation, I already explained why it's better to make suggestions in the suggestions section and not here.

I have read the recent posts and people are indeed coming here to report issues.

On the support page, the first link under "Bugs & feature requests" links right here to this forum. I feel like OP was unfairly criticized for possibly being in the wrong place, because this is in fact the place it points to for both issues AND feature requests. The link may read "Ideas & Feedback," but it links here to "Questions & Support."

No one criticized it; I simply told him he wasn't in the right place to make  suggestions. Period.

For my part, I wish you a good day, and please, when you read a post, always try to read without attributing bad intentions. Keep in mind that people from many countries gather here and not all of us have English as our mother tongue, or the same culture, maybe to you a certain phrase may seem like an unjustified criticism, but to another person, it seems simply correct to express a point, you don't have to look for bad intentions, because many times there aren't any, remember, we can't see each other's faces or expressions, we don't really know the tone of a speech and the rule is to always read in good faith.

If the link from that page points incorrectly, then you've found an error, and it's best to report it to the staff so they can correct it.

I wouldn't know how to describe where such errors should be reported, but perhaps when the moderator reads this, they can tell you the best way to report this incorrect link.

What the Bloody Hell is/was DDoS? (And do not say Abbrev. for "Dog Days of Summer", So Not funny)
I have had to deal with it on my F95 page for about 2 weeks? Everytime I refreshed page. It was REALLY Annoying.

It's not a dedicated current status site like you're imagining, but I just found out that the itch.io Discord seems to be the place for the type of news you're looking for, and I'm surprised it hasn't been recommended by anyone for this purpose. The below is from the "news" channel:

Moderator (1 edit)

That's because itch.io staff doesn't monitor the Discord either. Our admins reply there more often, but most of the time you still have to use the proper channels to get support, just like here.

(Plus, people shouldn't have to join the Discord if they don't want to.  We have a perfectly good forum right here.)

(1 edit)

Sure, it's just in lieu of a status update website, the Discord seems to be a very good source of info on the current status of the site. (For example, I wouldn't have tried to report the images-not-loading issue here on the forum if I had been a member of the Discord and seen the news item mentioning it.)

I think we're on the same page, but it's a little unclear what constitutes a proper channel used by itch.io staff- Between the forum, Discord, Github issue tracker, and support email, where should folks be reporting general issues with the site and/or suggesting features so that staff or admins will actually be able to see them?

Moderator

Normally bug reports and feature suggestions should go to GitHub. Not sure about the status of the Ideas&Feedback forum category. For other issues, you pretty much have to e-mail support. This category is for asking other members to help, in case it's a problem that can be solved without involving support.

It's true that our admins post updates more often on Discord, so people who can and want to join are welcome to.

I agree with you on multiple points. But so you know for next time, there’s a general site that helps confirm outages—

https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/itch.io.html

As somebody else here said, it’s easy to tell if the site is down. And I don’t need to go to another site to confirm it.

What sucks is having to manually come back every 10 minutes, then 30 minutes, then hours at a time to see if the site is back up. And even then, after it came back up the other day, images weren’t been served properly for hours afterwards meaning I couldn’t finish the post I was writing.

Apple’s developer site has a system status service you can access via this link. You can tell at a glance if there are issues anywhere. Itch would need such a detailed chart, but a few stoplights showing current status would be nice. And should be fairly easy to automate.

I agree a status page would be nice.

Is It Down Right Now has a field showing when the last reported outage is. I thought it was common sense— but likely not— that if a site was down within the past day, it’s a big risk trying to upload anything important to it. I forget to check, too. But it is reassuring to know that itch.io is looking stable before committing a bunch of processing time to it.

For me, a page that’s not associated with Facebook (Is It Down Right Now is, for commenting) would be most helpful.
