Description
DAW: Ableton

(Note, I didn't have the time I wished so I rushed it a bit. Like the super wind, crashing sound. It is wind, and meant to reflect the icy winds of the arctic.)

Shifting winds over the ice frosted arctic shelf. A ship stuck in the endless sea of ice, unable to escape.

This was my first attempt at making ambient music. I have always wanted to do it so this Jam has been very enlightening and helpful to getting me into making this sort of music. It was defiantly a learning process!

Advice and feedback welcome.

Description of Setup (Optional but recommended)
DAW: Ableton Live 12 Inro
Plugins: ValhallaVintageVerb
LABS for instruments
Ambient Guitars, Arctic Swells, Dulcimer, Frozen Strings, Tundra Atmos.

Lessons Learned
I didn't know how easy it was to make ambient music till this Jam. But how to make Good sounding ambient music, that is a different story. I learned that it is a hard task to blend all of the instruments together so that they do not break through the back ground. I also learned, I need to use more plugins and effects!

Wow, absolutely loved this submission. The sound effect and the subtle strings made it very cinematic ! You managed to make a magestic soundscape with only a few

Although there's one big issue for me : you had a lot of beach sound design elements, crashing waves, seagulls, but that wasn't what the theme was about at all, and I think it's a shame because the track sounded amazing. I understand your thought process, but to me that just doesn't connect when you think of "the frozen waste".

Nonentheless, definitly a track I can chill too, 5/5 listenability, 5/5 sense of atmosphere. Good job !

Thanks so much Noahrav! I liked yours too. Yeah, I was imagining the bird sounds to be like crows or something and as for the wave sound, XDXD I thought it sounded closer to wind. Anyway. Those were good notes! Again ,thanks!

Is super nice and chill, mix is great as well. A bit on a brighter side of "harsh frozen shore" situation. Prolly one of the best subs this time, I enjoyed it alot. Verygj

Really solid composition you've got here squirrel! it really hits the brief so well, especially love how the low level chatter kind of makes it seem like its a ship moving through the water before a crash or something like in the painting. I do agree with the lesson learned, it can be pretty easy to make ambient music but good stuff can be hard - you've made the good stuff!

Developer

Thanks so much Jiggy! I am super happy with how it came out! I did imagine a ship slowly moving through the icy waters. Again, thank you!

really clean, immersive and good sounding piece. Not much more to say, really, i just saved it so i can have it in the background later, really impressive work! (except that wind crashing sound that you're talking about, which is kind of too loud)

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, I should have put it as its buss and made it quieter. Again, thanks!

You tell us again that you don’t know how ambiance work! This is stunning.

The background noises like the wind, birds and waves are beautifully paired with the droning strings and droning voices and here and then some dulcimer glistening thru. I can’t even believe that this is made with mostly free samples. You definitely did some GREAT work. The ambiance you’ve created just begs the listener to stay a wile longer and just soak it in.

While you said you wanted to implement some more FX, I don’t think this is necessary. It is a beauty as it is.

Developer

Thank you so much EinelTheFox! This means a lot to me! I am indeed super happy with how it came out.

Great feel of atmosphere and very well paced, for someone's 1st experience with ambiance I'd expect a much busier composition, furtunately you nailed it!

You used the wind samples very well, I've heard some others that weren't able to pull that off, and I do love a well used sample, but in this case, I see the amb track for a game, the wind FX will be there, what you need is something for the background to maintain atmosphere when its not, but not be the game atmosphere itself (hope I'm getting the point across well)

Great submission! Take care :3

Developer

Thanks! Yah, I did miss the something in the background. Could have been some low bass or something. Thanks for the reply!

The atmosphere is there for sure. I also love that it's not as dark as most submissions (including mine) are, but gives a sense of the greatness of nature!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! It was a lot of work but fun.

Really nice. Enough subtle variation and melodic detail to avoid repetitivenes, but without drawing too much interest either so it can remain in the background of immersive gameplay. Would be interested to hear the mix without the SFX, since I would imagine in the actual game these would be mixed differently and the presence of your instruments in the reverb would be different.

Developer

Thanks! It was a lot of work but fun. It would fit in a game for sure! Interesting thought. I would be different to hear it without the SFXs!

This is fantastic! It's mixed excellently - it's both clean and lush - something not a lot of people pull off. Most people go too dry trying to sound clean, but really they don't have control of the reverb.

I also love the little shifts in pitch here and there, that really does solid.

That little progression around 2:15 is also peak, very subtle, but also gives it that emotional depth while the track is still in the background and not getting in the way.

I know Fox said it could use a little more change - but given the nature of the track, I think that for what you presented, you actually executed it well. If it were to go on much longer, that's when you'd want to shift key or something like that, but I didn't actually find myself wanting for anything like that.

This is really solid work. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much Kale! This means a lot to me! I hoped that it sounded clean and lush. I had a hard time getting the reverb and other elements to work together well. I too liked how it came out. Again, this reply is super encouraging to me! Thank you!

Amazing work! Subtle and very much a frozen setting. LABS truly comes in clutch with a lot of those frozen instruments/kits. I think actually you could've used like a low drone (like Harmonic Bass in Astral Forms, for example) to fill just a tiny bit of space, but besides that, the sounds are great!

Developer

Thanks! LABS totally has the best when it comes to this sort of stuff. But you are right, I needed a low bass, just as Foxhyde pointed out. Perhaps when I republish it, I will haha. Thanks again for listening!

This is pretty nice. Really gets the video game ambience thing across well. Things like Artic Swells, Frozen Strings, and Tundra Atmos are three of my all time go to instruments for ambient production. They're both subtle in the mix but powerful sounds when it comes to sculpting ambience.

Great work.

All right, that is truly ambient piece, from someone that kept saying he doesn't know how to make ambient, well now you know. Although it is indeed a huge atmosphere, I was expecting some subtle change, some new instruments coming up, some low end maybe (I always love some bass), doesn't have to be punchy it can be introduced lightly but just something ot make us move a little bit would've been very nice. Well done ;)

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, I am a bit stunned by what I was able to produce. But, now that I think about it, you are completely right. I needed to add some low bass in some where, and perhaps even change it up a little bit with new instruments. Thanks for the feedback though! Very appreciated.

Submitted(+1)

I don't really have anything in the way of feedback. I just wanted to say that this was lovely to listen to.

Keep up the good work :)

Really nice vibe, for me personally the ambiance sfx were a bit too loud to clearly hear the instruments at parts, but worked great together to set the scene.

Skyrim feels are there like Reflect Null mentioned already, and I really felt that you managed to get the same great spacious/washy feel of space for the instruments that Jeremy Soule always has for his music, which I think add a lot to giving this that Skyrim feel.

Good work!

I liked the track—it works well! (maybe the sound of wind or waves a bit loud at times, overlapping the rest of the music ? I’m not entirely sure). Otherwise, I really enjoyed it and listened to it twice! :) Very subtle and elegant, great work.

Great track, I think all the instruments are blended into the background perfectly, so you let the wind and the atmosphere really shine through like it should. I get heavy Skyrim feels from this one. Sometimes in the track, like at 4:22, there's that sound of a big swelling wave - and I realize the song is called Arctic Swells - which kinda catches me of guard, because I'm not sure if the water is supposed to be frozen or not. Or is it that there are like... floating pieces of ice, but most of it is still water? Anyway that doesn't matter. Nice job!

Developer

Thanks so much for listening! It certainly does have the Skyrim feel! The big swelling wave sound is meant to be wind. Like a huge gust of icy arctic wind. Thangs for pointing that out though! And for your thoughts! They are very helpful.

Got it, I wasn't sure if it was wind or water ;P But now that you say wind, it makes more sense haha.
