A "Lot" of Sodom and Gomora huh? Well I must say that's some impressive wordplay right there (*_*)

Still I think the makes up for the different theme in its mood and setting. 

As another participant who made a runner game I'd like to offer a bit of advice:

  • Try to learn procedural level generation 

It's not a must, in fact personally our team prefers "designed" levels. But for the limited time you have during a game jam, a short investment here means being able to allocate time (and resources in most cases) elsewhere.

This also means you can include a "score" system so people will have a reason to replay the game.

  • Consider adding "tension"

Tension is very important in a scrolling runner. Our submission was slower paced, so we didn't make the screen scroll. In your game, the character gets further and further from the raining fire, as far as I can tell this is used to show progress and is very much a nice technique. But unfortunately as a side-effect the player faces less and less tension when they're supposed to be a dangerous situation. 

Some games take the exact opposite approach and make the destruction come closer and closer until the player slimly escapes. You don't need to do this per se, but you could add meteors into the background or similar objects to show the scale of the destruction. This way not only will the player be able to see themselves getting closer to the goal, but also that even if they're escaping the epicenter of the destruction they're not quite out of the woods yet.


Besides that this is pretty sweet for a first game-jam entry, a lot better than my own I might add

Well it's a very broad topic but it's probably best to start with "runner" tutorials 

the next stage of this (even advanced for us) is to build "dungeon" or large structures.

I'm a sucker for auto runners, lol. Only things I'd do are add more audio/music and work on the hit detection for when you run into an obstacle. Really solid game overall.

It really reminds me of Geometry Dash, where one bad jump can kill you. Fun little game and cool story to support it!

Always like the ones that take a less traveled path with the theme. Almost went with "lot" as in a plot of land, myself. I like your direction better. :) 

The Graphics were consistent and worked well. The Audio was a great complement to it. Together, it made for a really good retro feel to the game. 

The mood was a bit weird because the text sets up for a dire situation, but I found the gameplay humorous from the Relentlessly Pursuing Hellfire you run from to the Butt Rock of Doom when you fail. My suggestion would be to lighten up on the text, as the gameplay already works well as it is. 

Really nice work, and a great little game that I hope you revisit to work more on again in the future.

Wow... a biblical game... This is the first time I have ever seen someone made a biblical game for itch.io jam, and this is your first non-tutorial game?

Before I criticize the game itself I just need to correct one thing though: Lot only fled Sodom; Gomorrah was just another city that was judged for the same sins -- so the game name should be "Lot of Sodom"

Now onto the game itself:

  • The graphics is such a great pixel art. It is simplistic with low resolution yet I love it. My only complain is that the first time I played it I didn't know what the danger of a tree was (missed the down arrow the first time); turns out it was a branch sticking out huh... I think to show the danger better you could've made the "dangerous leaf" having brighter color :P
  • The audio is also simplistic and fits really well with the pixel art -- giving this 8-bit-ish vibe
  • Now mood wise I believe it can have a lot of improvements. First off with the fire only grazing the left side of the screen, it doesn't really scream "danger" don't you think? If I were you I would've made the fire travel slower and diagonally, filling more parts of the screen. Also I think the background should be reddish hue (the event took place at dawn too so it's appropriate) and maybe even add some fire and brimstone in the background too to speak more danger vibe.
  • Overall it fits the theme I suppose. It is a big stretch to the theme, and very unexpected but very creative interpretation -- love it.

Overall good work here. It can have some improvements, but it is really good for your first non-tutorial game and for something made in just three days.

I liked your game a lot! It is surprisingly polished, the graphics are good,  all sounds effects are fitting, there even is a small storyline. I enjoy how immediate is the respawn, don't even have to press anything and I'm back in running hell! lol It would be nice if there was some sort of score and also I felt like I was lacking control over the character. If you could control the height of the jump by holding longer/ shorter the up arrow or maybe making the character fall faster when holding down arrow in the air - that would be great in my opinion. Also, when you jump close to an obstacle then you hit it and bounces you straight into the meteors, which I found funny lol But probably shouldn't be happening :)

I liked the theme of the game a lot!  And the arrows are a great way to help the player learn the controls without needing a more boring set of instructions.  I often made the mistake of not ducking under trees, though, thinking they were background pieces.  Overall, you did a great job!
