NIce one. Even though it's so incomplete, this game shows lots of promise. I'm digging the direction the fights are headed for, I'm digging the fragment drops mechanic. I'm just waiting for a full version.

Again, we're seeing only the bare bones of this game, it's a miracle it manages to bring to light what it's going for! I featured it in my video, watch me avoid the "git gud" rank:

https://youtu.be/bFHWSZ1BOBw?t=2921

(also what's the title for when the game is complete? Finished Symphony?)

My God! This is the BEST game on this Jam!

The only issue is that enemies are sponges that can survive a LOT of attacks and also make alternative fire useless...still Amazing game! (is it was a little bit longer...)

(+1)

Well at least you were honest with the unfinished part xD.

Short range attacks doesn't mix well with danmaku throwing enemies, and sadly this are the ones that works the most against them, dashing doesn't seem to make this easier.

I like that you can buy upgrades, even if I don't know what they do xD, don't know if the sorting was random, because Flan sells me 3 catadioptric barrage at 35%, so there wasn't that much of a choice lol.

Excellent art in detail and animation!  The gameplay is good.  Author could make a 'Zelda-like' if they wanted.

Even with those unfinished-related disclaimers, this is pretty dang cool. The only thing that's really missing is sound effects, and the map and Reimu's sprite look awesome. Gameplay works just fine too, the only adjustment I would suggest is giving the enemies less health but making them more dangerous, as combat feels like spamming hits until they shoot, then repeat. Oh yeah, and that thumbnail is rad.

Will definitely play this again after any updates.

Developer(+1)

I was joking with the artist that we could clickbait people to play our game with the thumbnails haha. Thank you for the feedback!

I know you probably pictured something different in your mind for the end result, but I still think the amount that was done is impressive for 3 days of work, and I would say it is quite finished for a jam project! I like the pixel art for Reimu a lot and the dash + melee gameplay works! Also like the chill music

You know harping on your own game will only make me all soured up if your game has this much potential. Yeah, I reached the "git gud" stage pretty early on, but I wanted to see it to the end anyway. I think the enemies could have had lesser health than currently, and also there could have been some indication (like a channeling animation) before they launch their attacks so you know when to approach. My personal preference would be to have dashing be oriented towards your mouse rather than your currently-facing direction, also. Little things that might've improved gameplay experience, though you're already most of the way there!

the game description really tries to set expectations low but its got some cool things

the pixels are neat, items have art, enemies hitcha properly, music is good, stuff generally works even if its a bit busted like how the projectile does very little for damage and melee will almost certainly cost some hp

ive had jam plans go down the shitter, it happens

I just gotta say I like the color pattern on the bamboo at the top.

Being able to dodge over the pits/walls was unexpected and neat.

I really like it, and I hope you come back to it in the future. My favorite part is the graphics for sure

Yes, I approve touhou meets any existing rouge-lite. The game is unfinished but it has a lot of potential. I would mention my comments about the build but TankTheta did mentioned most of it. The game has a lot to improve, especially in terms of the design. I find that heavy bullet hell make not may so well on this one, since you will also need a way to evade them while you can only deal damage in close range.

I would suggest one thing though that is to start from making the game fun to play even at this stage with this amount of content. I normally achieve this by adding some "game juice" to make the player's action fun, you can take a look at my game and this https://iced-lemon.itch.io/falling-sky  for reference. But that is how I achieve things, there are many ways to design it to make it fun, so do think about it.

Anyway. I do look forward for the development of the game. I hope my words encourage you rather than hinder you. context: I am a sucker to rouge-lites. Also, that's a lot of memes you got there.

Hades was a really big inspiration for the project. I also feel that heavy bullet-hell might not work out as well. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

Haha, that's Hades... I like it.

TankTheta did said pretty points I'd like to say, and as game description said - a lot of it is unfinished, but then there are conceptual flaws, like melee range, enemies damaging by touching and not telegraphing shots, and even then, it doesn't look possible to dodge shots even on medium range. Game would need a lot of polish to become something interesting.

On other hand good decision on turning off death, helps to see what game have to offer without restarting and trying too much, 10/10 feature

Developer(+2)

The attacks are coded at the last second so that there's at least some challenge. Not that it matters since there wasn't enough time to code in death (facepalm). Thanks for playing though. I really appreciate it.

The game has lots of potential. But the main issue holding it back is a few things.
1. The enemies in general are too tanky. It makes the game a slog to play when even the most basic enemy takes like 5 combos. And the perks help this alot, but they make it enjoyable when before it wasn't.
2. The melee range is rather low. And so you constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY hit, not by the projectiles but the actual enemy while attacking because your own attack propels you forward. I suggest you take the third hit in the combo that has actual knockback and some range, and make that the basic attack. And make the final hit more extreme.
3. Enemies take forever to attack.
4. There's no telegraphing so you're waiting for enemies to attack so you know when it's safe.
5. No health recovery at all.
6. Real low enemy variety.

However, as I said before I think this game as potential and I'd love to see it fleshed out. So let me tell you what I liked.
1. Homing's mostly pretty good.
2. Perks all seem good, even if basic they are interesting. Like Marked is nice, Reflects are nice, the "Higher value drops" is good.
3. Art's nice. Animation could really make this shine. But the masks are nice (Final boss is rough but obviously Game Jam limits how much you can really do, when I was animating for Hourai Victim I felt that)
4. Music's real nice, gives some nice aesthetics.

Overall, I think you should actually make this a proper game, because it does have potential.
Polish it up with some animations, new perks, a larger attack and all that. And it could come out really nice.
Hell, it's what me and Cathulu are doing with Golden Flame right nowand eventually also with DanmakuDragon (That's our own entry in this game jam here https://itch.io/jam/touhou-jam-6/rate/912501 )
Hell, I also want to make Hourai Victim something I flesh out too since the other devs weren't interested.
Anyway, that's all. Goodluck in the future.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't really sure if I should continue with the game but your post really convinced me to try going for it. After all, I need a place for all those arts and music that went unused since the game isn't finished. Really grateful that you took the time to critique this game.

Honestly it warms my heart that I encouraged you to really go for it. I'm more than glad to write a good dose of feedback if it leads to someone chasing their ambitions like this. You're welcome man. After all, the main game I'm working on right now spawned from a Game Jam and I'm  happy to be working on The Golden Flame (it's coming along so well haha). So I'd really like to see you take a nice idea and make it shine.  If you need any help with the art, just ask. I'm happy to lend a hand.
Go far with it man, you've got some potential to make this a decent game.

(Also if you have a twitter, discord or something so I can keep up with the game's development, can you send it?)

Developer(+1)

Many thanks for the post, my team is also looking forward to developing the project further as well. As for updates on the game development, I do not have social media for this stuff yet, but I might share my progress on the Touhou Game Dev Hub Discord server from time to time.

Submitted(+1)

I'm actually banned from there. Some guy went turbo rage when I criticized someone harshly for them harassing some members. And that guy went and said various things to the head mods of the server and got me banned I believe.  I think? idk that's my guess.

You should crack open a social media. Or you can maybe make a dedicated server for it (Since then I don't need to deal with trying to somehow get back into a banned server)

Developer(+1)

Oh, that's a shame. I might open a social media for my game dev stuff soon. But for now, I have a YouTube channel that I post random gaming stuff. If things get going I might post some dev stuff there.
