Got me surprisingly addicted just cause I wanted to see where the big ol' beanstalk was gonna grow to but it after a while it felt a little grindy especially for a jam game. I do really like the mix of platforming with resource gathering though so great job :)
I really liked the idea you had here. And your visuals are really neat. Especially the plant that really stayed consistent all the way through as it was growing. (This must be even harder to draw than it seems )
The game needs some adjustments in term of QoL and time management. Which is easier said than done for a 48h jam ^^
Others already gave you a lot of very constructive feedbacks so I'll just pinpoint one specific aspect that I had the most in mind while playing.
Right now it basically only take 3 bushes to have a full rotation of leaf supplies to fill up a composter as the 1st one is ready to harvest by the time you collect the 3rd one. So there isn't really any incentive to use all the resource provided. Adjusting timer might help but might also make it more frustrating. Another solution would be to be able to stack up items that you can carry so there would be a reason to explore further. (I realized as I'm writing this that this might have been your initial plan as the player is carrying what looks like a basket on his back, but you just ran out of time to implement it ^^)
Also same issue with the second composter. There isn't any reason to build it given the time it needs to fill one vs the time needed to generate 1 compost.
All in all it's a really neat game that needs a little more time to be polished.
Great job and congrats on submitting your game ! even if it's not the fully finished version you had in mind :)
I hope you take the time to finish an polish it after the jam. Even if just for yourself :)
Thanks a lot for the very detailed feedback! I do plan on taking all the feedback I've received from the jam to improve the game and add new features, so hopefully it'll live up better to what i think it could be!
I'm aware that the timers and resources need adjusting, I'm thinking if lowering the second composter and readjusting elements so you can throw down compost from up with less issues, and yes! initially the backpack was an upgrade you'd craft to get more items at once to carry around! I'll definitely polish this game more after the jam is over, thanks again for playing and all the constructive feedback!
I really like the idea but like others said, the character is a bit too slow and the progression too but otherwise the beginning was cool !!
Gathering resources to make a plant grow higher to access more resources is a very interesting concept. I would have liked to have other ways to do it. Many directions in which you could go from there (automation ? Stressing factors ? I don't know). In the game's current state, it started to be a little long before obtaining the composter (and sadly, the game crashed right after that).
Graphs are really good and it totally follows the theme.
Very well done for a solo dev. Sad that you didn't had time to include the sound.
Thanks for the feedback ! I would have loved to add some of these extra stuff, like bugs that would arrive to make some things unusable that you'd have to fend off, or a way to bring more ressources around, and I'll try to add all that in the post game jam for sure, automation could be awesome too! Thanks for playing!
Nice game. I liked the simple art style and all it needs is some sound effects.
The game idea's pretty nice! The graphics look great (but could look even better)
As for the gameplay, it started out pretty fun, and ended up feeling like a chore...
Stuff like mining 10 rocks and filling the composter took waaaaay too long, to the point where I wanted to stop playing :C
The player hitbox was a bit... weird... and had the same size as the sprite, which is fair when the character has a big head, body, limbs etc., but in this case, I found it a bit annoying to not be able to jump from between the plant's leaves and the walls, or not being able to jump off the sides of a leaf because that small plant on top of the player's head
I think your game has some potential, but just needs some more tweaking (*ahem*, looking at you composter)
Thanks for the feedback! I agree I definitely need to rebalance stuff to make it less repetitive and long later on, and the mobility could use some reworking too.. As for the graphics, there actually was a lot more planned to be put in, like visual effects, a paralax background, and better level design, but while they were ready in theory in terms of assets I ran out of time implementing them.. But they should be there for the post jam version I've started working on!
Thanks again for playing!
I enjoyed this! I basically have all the same suggestions as everybody else as far as balancing, movement etc. Was a fun play and a great concept + use of the theme :D
It's a good idea and the design is cute, the art is beautiful.
The character could fall faster and move quicker to make the controls feel a bit more natural. Navigating from one side to the other over and over again when it's that slow gets a bit irritating.
I don't understand the difference between one thing that looks like a leaf and another one that looks like another type of leaf but isn't accepted by the things that require leaves. It would be nice to see the name of things on screen when picked up so I know what they are in this case.
Thanks for the feedback! I wanted to add highlight effects to better identify things that could be picked up, maybe then adding the item name could improve that idea further! And i agree, the mobility needs reworking, I'll definitely redesign things after the jam to make it smoother! Thanks for playing!
I really liked the art! The little golem was so cute. I found some bugs with movement that made it a little hard to actually get around.
I didn't end up beating the game just because it takes so long for a composter to make one compost so it ended up getting a little tedious but the actual game loop is good.
Really cute game! Core gameplay loop of growing a big plant is rlly cool, and I loved the aesthetic. If you ever plan on fleshing the game out, maybe a way to sprint or carry multiple things at once would go a long way? And a parallax background would be sick! Regardless, really cool game! Kudos!
I love the idea behind this, found some tips to climb higher by spamming, but just a small nickpick for me, i wanted to carry abit more things... BUT yes i enjoyed it, i play for quite a bit, but i still couldn't see the top though :( BUT good job on this.
game looks somehow cozy, i love instructions on screen, great game overall :)
Aww, this was cute!! It's amazing that you did so many plant sprites!! I think the shining part about this game was the level design -- I thought it was very clever to use the plant to unlock other areas of the map. I do admit it would be nice if the controls were cleaned up a bit -- sometimes the colliders felt a bit janky and the movement could have been smoother, but I really enjoyed how you led the player on a progression through the game!
(I'll also note, I never ended up using the second composter...there was only one leaf bush nearby and the other four leaf bushes were way lower, and in the time it took me to collect all 4 leaf bushes and drop the leaves, the leaves would regrow! So I never found it worth it to have the second composter.)
Thanks for all the precious feedback! I do really think the controls and overall polishing of the game could do Iot a lot of improvement as well! The second composter was supposed to help make more compost faster in the late stages, but maybe repositioning it lower might help? Thanks again for playing!
It has potential but needs some balancing for sure. The stone generation is way too slow for how much of it you need, and the movement feels slow as well. Still pretty solid considering the time frame.
