Took me a while until I figured out how to collect food, it wasn't obvious that I collected it when I clicked. With that said, the idea was interesting, and it encourages sitting down and playing for a while to collect plenty of food. I suggest making it so you can move by just holding the left click, as it gets tedious to spam clicks.
There's also a bug where you can leave the boundaries of the map.
Thank you for playing. The boundaries will be fixed in an update I plan to push next week. next week and Iay also implement an option to move by holding the button.
Pretty good concept ! I don't have anything more to say than what was already said. I think the soldier didn't had any use in this version of the game ? Maybe a little more feedback and you could follow a very good trail.
(it happens because ants follow the trail of ants that follow the trail of ants following the trail of...)People criticised the ants circling around bushes, but this bug reminds me of ant mills :
If you ever work on it more, you could add the fact that the scout follows the mouse as long as the left click stays pressed (in order to not spam clic).
Overall, neat entry !
There is always one caterpillar on the map that can be killed with soldiers but currently there is only audio feedback for the attacks because I did not have time to implement animations for it. I plan to add a marker that shows the caterpillars position when another ant spots it.
Really cool game! I'm a huge fan of these types of games and this one really scratched an itch, it has a surprisingly solid progression system for a jam. I wish it was a little easier for the scout to gather food but other than that I really enjoyed this game. Great job!
Thank you :)
A really cool concept with some interesting gameplay ideas. Life as an ant is strangely relaxing!
Thanks for joining the jam :D
Thank you :)
An awesome idea, and very well executed! I think the pathfinding for the ants could use a bit of tuning, they'd often get stuck running in circles because of some bush, but even with that everything seemed to work very well, and it was a very nice time playing, great job!
Thank you, I have already a fix for the circling ants Ican push after the voting period. you can circumvent it for now by only collecting food from bushes that have no obstacle nearby or by building more workers that should approach other food pieces. The current rate for food consumption is very lenient so a few circling ants should not be too much of an issue.
Yep! Usually it ended up fixing itself after a while so it wasn't a major issue!
Well done for getting so much done as a solo dev! Fun concept and I enjoyed my time playing. :) Thanks for jamming with us!
Thank you :)
I really like the concept. I would play more of this if you decide polish it after the rating.
Thank you for playing. I have a few things planned for an update early next week. My main project currently is making a full steam release from my Halloween jam game.
That's so cool!
Really unique idea and generally nice job on the game as a whole, however i once found all my workers running around the same bush over and over even though there was plenty of food nearby which is a bit of annoying bug and i think could be fixed considering that you submitted 15h before the deadline. Despite that the game feels really nice and the art style is i think really fitting
Thank you for playing. On Sunday I had other obligations. Else I would have fixed it.
Edit: I have a workaround ready now that I can push after the rating period.
I liked the concept a lot!!! You must have done a lot of work to get the pathing for the worker ants right, I was really happy to see that! I was surprised to see that more workers =/= more food at a certain point -- I had built 25 workers but I found that I actually could have gotten away with fewer; a lot ended up being idle because they're not very smart and my impression was that I would have to pick up one food from a new bush and bring it back to trigger the other ants to come.
A couple bugs, but not game breaking: I had a couple ants freeze in place when I picked up the food kind of right from under them. Not sure if it was just an afterimage or something else (hard to count the ants), but something to keep in mind! There's also a few foods that spawn close enough to the bushes that a worker ant gets perpetually trapped circling around the bush because the gravity rerouting around the bush (I assume that was necessary to make the pathing work well) made it so the ant couldn't actually reach the food, so I also lost a couple workers to that.
Thank you for playing and for the detailed feedback. Having to bring the food back was a design choice to mimic a pheromon trail a bit because I did not have time to implement an actual system for that. My solution would now be to add an additional scout class that only does scouting and brings back the first unit of food from a source (or let workers scout when idle). I also did not have time to investigate why some single ants get stuck in place but the death spiralling comes from trying to avoid an obstacle while the food is spawned inside a collider. Here I could add a timer for the ant to ignore the collision and also make sure food does not spawn inside a collider.
Too good not to play until you win, good game
Thank you for playing :)
