Fun game. I don't get sucked into these sort of games anymore though. I liked the art and the sound effects. Great job.

Developer

Definitely a love it or hate it game genre. We appreciate you playing even if it wasn't your cup of tea.

This is really fun! I love the atmosphere, sound effects, ambience, all of it! I liked the addition of the skillcheck, that was neat! Kept it from getting too monotonous. My arm a bit sore now but I had fun lol. Also I'm blown away by how quickly some people have been able to beat the game!

Developer(+1)

Yes! We have some truly shocking times on the leaderboard with 117 submissions and counting so far. The current WR time is believed to be an out of bounds glitch but we haven't been able to recreate it yet. I even got Crank set up with a page on speedrun.com so we can see video runs soon.

Very nice game, got me hooked for a long time cranking! I like the visuals and audio and just watching that crank go round and round and the coins flying :D The skillcheck mechanic was an added source of pleasure for me trying to hit my spacebar at the right time and also trying to do it multiple times in 1 circle!

Developer

I agree on the part about the skillcheck. I think the main gameplay loop would be a lot more tedious and boring if we didn't have a second little action to keep things fresh.

Oh (and ow) wow this is fantastic. Kinda frightening how quickly this took me into a compulsive state of being unable to tear myself away, really effective visuals and sound design too. (The sound of those coins raining down…)

Developer (1 edit)

The crank may be fun to turn, but we all pay a price (our joints and muscles).

Played for 10 minutes before my arm started hurting. Seems like it has a story but I was just too lazy to finish the game

Developer

Totally get it. I try my best to get through every game I review and give it a fair shot, but it is a game jam after all and these games aren't gonna review themselves.

Submitted(+1)

It's probably not the game one might expect to see in this jam, but definitely the game all of us deserved

Developer

Comments like these are what keep me hungry to keep grinding on the game. Huge appreciation to you and everyone else who loves Crank!

Great game! I love the art style, it complements the gameplay very well

Developer

Love the art style in pumpkin defense as well. Hope you turn it into a full TD game at some point. I'm a sucker for the genre.

Step 1: Get the rotation

Step 2: Put your phone in the left mouse button

Step 3: AFK

Step 4: Get rich ;)

Developer(+1)

You discovered the engine. >:)

Really nice and honestly enjoyable tycoon.

Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks man. You too!

OMG ... you evil evil person! Stealing my life away! This was so addictive - LOL.

I LOVE the way the GFX get all glitchy-optical-illusions when the thing is going faster than the computer's frame-rate (or my brain's frame-rate TBH) ... it was really funny how silly the whole thing got.

Poor guy must have major RSI - haha.

Developer(+1)

We never intended for the visuals to get so crazy on the tether but I'm glad it happened. It almost hypnotizes me when it gets up to higher speeds.

Submitted(+1)

Well this certainly didn’t improve my productivity today, haha :D What an AMAZING game. Such a great idea. I escaped in 39 minutes, currently 45 on leaderboard. The fact that you have a leaderboard alone :D I want to try again. I don’t think I ever played a game jam entry for this amount of time.

Developer

The leaderboard was something we really wanted to add. Super glad we managed to get it pushed even though it was a last minute addition! Your game was also excellent. Thanks for the review.

fun game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Would love to see a global leaderboard for laptimes in Witches Cup at some point!

Oh wow my dopamine got kidnapped, can I have it back? funny game but yeah it lies on the verge of fun/addiction. Love that these games are having their moment right now. Well done.

Developer(+1)

It is pretty incredible that the human mind can be pushed to pursue such a seemingly meaningless task. So long as the correct combination of visual and auditory stimuli are presented.

What happened to the last 45 minutes? Have I fallen into a coma? Where was I? What did I do?

Ok but seriously, this was super fun.

Developer

Congratulations on getting sucked into the Crank Matrix. Who knew muscle and joint pain could be so much fun?

CRANK!

(That's the sound of my arm hurting after playing this game)

I love incremental games, and this game felt like a decent interpretation of the genre. I enjoyed the sense of progression, how physical it was, and how the automatization emerged organically from the system itself, rather than being just an upgrade that you can purchase. Game left me with an elevated heartbeat, curiosity about how the hell somebody managed to beat this game under 12 minutes, and ears bleeding from the cranking sound effect, which progressed from annoying to insufferable very quickly.

Nice job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for trying out Crank. I completely agree on the coin sound becoming out of control at higher speeds. We have plans to implement something more reasonable in a post jam build but ran out of time before submission. The physicality of the game surprised me as well. Never woken up the next day with sore muscles from using a mouse.

Evocative of Blake Fall-Conroy's Minimum Wage Machine but far more forgiving. It takes a while for the idle mechanics to kick in, but once it does it hits that good 'number go up' (or down in the case) feeling.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for clueing me in on the Conroy’s work. I did some research and it will definitely serve as a source of inspiration going forward. I’d also like to apologize for not being able to review your game at the moment. My city is going into the 2nd day of a complete internet outage. Horrible timing and it’s making me insane but I plan to catch up on all my delinquent reviews the second it comes back online.

Excellent work, a very addictive game. The concept is unique, the creativity is top-notch. "Pain is part of the experience!" - is the perfect description for this game!

Developer (1 edit)

"Pain is the great teacher of mankind. Beneath its breath souls develop"

Very addictive — the sound design is incredible! I’m not sure how to make the high score table more secure :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks, WirelessMilk will be glad to hear that!

There was someone who had an impossibly low time on the high score table with a name similar to yours ;) kudos. It definitely got me thinking about security more. Encryption will be coming up, hopefully it'll make the leaderboard a little bit harder to crack

Submitted(+1)

Surprisingly addictive. Made my entire desk shake and my arm hurt. Nice job :)

Developer(+2)

Thanks for cranking so furiously, hope your arm workout was enjoyable!

I have to say that this is a genre of game I really don't "get." There is a lot of polish here, though, as well as a "twist" (so to speak) because you have to rotate instead of clicking (leading to a different set of repetitive motion injuries, I suppose 🤭). It looks and sounds very good, too.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, totally fair, glad you enjoyed the looks and sounds of the game even if the mechanic is not very ergonomic. Thanks for playing!
