This is a pretty solidly made game! The aesthetics look fantastic, and the teleportation mechanic is very well-balanced. Some suggestions we thought of were to be able to click and hold to shoot, to have a bit more variety among the enemies, and to have the upgrade menu between levels instead of on the title screen. Great job!!

Thanks a lot! Hold to shoot was an option, but I didn't make it that way just in case I want to make a mechanic where you'd have to hold the fire button for longer to release a stronger laser. I also definately plan on adding some more enemies because the way the game is now, it isn't fun enough to keep the player interested. And thanks for the idea regarding the shop the shop in between the levels!

Really well made, love the upgrades menu and the "upgrade bars" you made, it adds a lot for the game. i wish there was more feedback when the enemies are hurt, such as a red overlay or something.
overall awesome game!

Developer

Thanks a lot! That is a great idea, I will for sure add it after the rating period :D

Overall the game's well made and came together strongly, my only complaint is that in the end there's nothing too unique about this game. There are countless games that exist with the exact same formula. That being said, it's a pretty strong formula haha, so nice work! I really like the effect on the ship when you teleport.

Developer

Thanks a lot! I though about adding a boss or multiple levels at first, but since the game had to have a high score feature I just though it was more fitting for it to be an endless runner type of game. I will (probably) work on the game at least a bit more after the rating period is over and maybe add a boss or some levels for the player to complete :D

Great retro Space Ship game. The effect of teleportation is cool!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot, the teleport shader was challenge for myself to get out of the comfort zone and learn something new :D

I really like the game. It looks great, and sounds fantastic! My only gripe is that I wish there was an indicator for teleportation cool down because I took a lot of damage spamming double tap to try to teleport, while not going anywhere. As it currently is, it  is a tough sell that to have to sacrifice standard movement to maybe teleport.  I think an indicator would help me better judge when to dodge and when to try to teleport. Overall really cool concept. I hope you had fun at this game jam!

Developer

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I actually did put in a visual indicator that the teleport is off cooldown, but it was a last minute thing so i forgot to mention it anywhere... The indicaor is that you can teleport after the ship re-materializes ( it may be a fifth of a second late sometimes ). Though i think I think i will have to enhance it with a sound effect as well.  And yeah, the jam was quite fun! :D

I feel as if the movement was too slow. The teleportation does come in handy, but in a tight space like this, I usually get shot down after I do that.

Word of advice: It's better to have your tutorial show up on the start of the game, rather than filling it in the description. Because I didn't knew I had teleportation abilities at first, until the read the description.

Great soundtrack and artwork though. Keep it up!

Developer

I went with the tight space sine it was noted that this should resemble a mobile game. Maybe I'll change the screen size or make the player unhittable for a short duration after he teleports, thanks for pointing that out!

Regarding the tutorial: I'll keep that in mind when making the next game. I went with this approach since I was tight on time and this was the easiest way for me to explain the mechanics.

And thanks for the compliments!!

Love the graphics and sound! Game is challenging but fun, great work! Would appreciate it if you could try my game too :)

Cool game, but a little too hard for me

Developer

Thanks! I'll change the controls at some point to make it  a bit smoother and perhaps that will make it easier :D

Submitted(+1)

Hahaha conceptually super similar to mine! We took completely different approaches to shmups tho :) I like yours

Wow, great art and music, love it, fits exactly those type of game, makes it even more engaging. The game at first feels a bit slow, but it's what makes the teleport a really usefull think and makes it fits the game.

Overall, great use of teleport and nice looking game, congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the compliments! This really makes me even more motivated to come back and make the game even better!

Great game and idea, I really liked all the art.  The only problem I had was with the controls. Sometimes I teleported when I didn't mean to and others I couldn't when I wanted to. I think moving the teleporting to q and e could make it easier and a bit more reliable. I really enjoyed the game overall though

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I moving the teleporting to the q and e buttons is actually a great idea. I will implement that after the rating period is over.

Thank you for leaving a comment and thank you for your critiques!

oh!  yeah, using Q and E is a good idea.  also adding a visual meter to show the teleport cooldown would really help so that you know when it is available or how long before it will be again.

Developer(+1)

Oh I actually did implement the visual cooldown feature, just forgot to mention it 😅  . The ship can teleport again after it fully re-appears :D

Thank you very much for the kind words!

I like simple concepts like this with upgrades to give the game some more replayability.  I didn't like very much the slow movement of the ship and the click to shoot mechanic. But in general I think it's very solid.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the compliment!

I made the spaceship slow with the intention of making the player rely on the teleport mechanic more, since it was the theme of the jam.

I am also planning on swtiching the shoot mechanic from the mouse button to the keyboard, since other players have complained about it as well!

Thank you for sharing your opinion!

hi, saw your post on the IndieTales discord.  this is pretty fun!  the graphics and music are really nice and the upgrade options add a lot to the gameplay.

a couple issues i had with it:
the window to double-tap A or D to teleport is way too liberal and i often found myself teleporting by accident.
i'm not a fan of using left mouse button to fire.  i would have preferred a key instead.  another issue with having to use the mouse is that you need to keep your mouse within the game area to shoot and i kept accidentally moving it outside of the area and not being able to shoot until i realize what was happening.
i really do like your sprites!  a bit more juice could help though-- some parallax scrolling in the background, small explosions when a laser hits enemies (or your ship) but doesn't kill them, and having your ship bank to the side when moving would add a lot.

other than that, i think some additional weapon upgrades, a few more enemies, and a boss could be really cool.  really nice work for a short game jam though!

Developer(+1)

The teleport window is kind of hard to balance, since some players struggle to do it and some do it on accident, so I will have to come up with an idea to fix it in the future.

Changing the fire button is a very good idea since I have many times accidentally clicked the main menu or the restart button in the game over screen after I died, so thank you for reminding me to change that!

Thank you for the compliment regarding the sprites! I also saw that the background lacks action during playtesting, though I just didn't have the time to change it. The same goes for the ship animations and others.

I also considered adding more enemies and a boss, but as I said, I was tight on time. After the rating period is over, I will come back and do my best to add more features to make the game more fun!

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, I am glad you enjoyed it :D
