The vibe really does feel like I'm celebrating my infinite free dessert. I really bask in it during strawberry jam.

Description
I have some friends who are currently making a game about a witch solving puzzles in a dessert landscape. When they asked me to make music for their game, they asked for Bossa Nova Jazzy style music so I took this opportunity to practice during the jam.
The track representations are very simple since I wanted to focus on making the music as enjoyable as possible first and formeost. So the themes of the tracks are up for discretion by the listener.
I composed the tracks starting with the bass line and chords because I wanted to make sure I had a solid foundation before I basically freestyled melodies as if it were a Jazz improv session.

WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE!
My friends made an incredibly pretty video to go along with my music and I highly recommend watching it!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
I like to focus on the orchestration techniques when it comes to theming, and what is more free than improv?
I wanted these tracks to feel like they had improvisational elements like a real jazz club would have.
Lots of off rhythm syncopation with a really funky bassline to compliment every instrument to its fullest, allowing them to be free with their voicings.
As a secondary element to the theming, The story of the music is that you are in a Jazz club that offers free desserts to all patrons. Free desserts? Sounds like the best kind of freedom to me!

Improv was a very clever move, I feel like you could have mixed/mastered just a little better but oh man the feel and groove is on point
Nice work! I really enjoyed the clever use of the trombone and clarinet patches!
so, like, who gave you permission to compose some good funky basslines...? i love that even though the slap basses are somewhat muted, they still carry forward the momentum of each track! jazzy pieces like these really benefit from constantly introducing new sections (A → B → C → ...), and you did that quite well! i want some dessert now.
i appreciate your music-oriented approach to the theme! i grooved to the distinct vibes of each piece; hard to choose a favorite. they all featured reed woodwinds. and i LOVE the color that those instruments can add. so. :~)
Really good work, I love the bass lines across all the songs! I think my favourite has to be Strawberry Jam, the chord progression is really satisfying and all the melody parts sound fantastic. It reminds me of the Mario Kart Wii soundtrack for some reason, which is always good! I also like the sort of raspy effect you put on some of the instruments to make it seem like they are being blown harder, I don't know what the proper term for it is but I think it sounds nice.
Thank you!
The thing your thinking of is the clarinet fluttering but it is also being overblown a bit too in order to make it raspy on purpose.
Interestingly, the idea to have the clarinet flutter like that was not mine, it was my friend who made the video for me. She suggested making the clarinet "Feral" and since I made this music to practice making music for her game, I went with it. It added a lot of texture so I'm glad you took note of it as it was honestly one of the more challenging parts to get feeling right to me.
This was really nice to just vibe to. Amazing basslines, the melodies were fantastic, and percussion was also really good! I also loved the chord choices for the songs as well. My favorite track was Gelato Vibrato. Or Bakers Dozen. I don't even know anymore, I think both are bangers. I don't wanna leave Strawberry Jam behind though, that one was also really good, especially that piano melody.
These songs (especially Gelato Vibrato) reminded me of the soundtrack from Ultimate Chicken Horse. I mean this as a big compliment, I really think that game has banger music.
Your submissions are always full of creativity and very fun to listen to! Good stuff as always Jofes!
OMG this is so cute and funky I love it! I'm pretty bad at explaining how I feel but this makes me want to dance or spin around in my chair if that makes sense. It feels kinda like letting go of your inhibitions. also Any Bakers Dozen is a banger it really feels like one of those run until your tired sort of feeling.
Thank you so much!
Dancing is EXACTLY how I wanted listeners to feel! letting go of your inhibitions also is something I tried to go for with the whole improv vibe I attempted.
Any Bakers Dozen was my golden child during the creation process so I'm glad that it is turning out to be the favorite by many like I'd hoped!
Love this, I feel like I'm playing a papa's pizzeria game listening to this :)
Very creative submission (as always I must say) I enjoyed it a lot !
It has a very great and pleasant vibe (the instrumentation is very nice, especially the bass parts), it went by very quickly : the video is pretty hypnotic, maybe it is a factor (it was very well done also).
All the tracks were great, although my favourite was Any Bakers Dozen (the acceleration at the start was very tastefully done and it has a great swing).
Overall awesome tracks, congrats !
Super tight execution on the theme here, and the concept is really well thought out. Gelato Vibrato wastes no time in getting into it and setting the tone. At times this track reminds me of some of the more notable tunes from the 2D Sonic games; particular the S&K3 era and some Mania (Mirage Saloon for the horns in particular)
Strawberry Jam is peak chilling music. Great progression and, much like the previous track, the bass does some heavy lifting here to stay funky and still serve as the backbone rhythm. The mixing of woodwind and brass instruments here was well done; keeps the textures varied, which is very apt given the food thematic. Taking this opportunity as well to say I love the use of different keys and the melody lines running throughout this one.
Kicking off Any Baker's Dream with some tempo modulation is a fantastic way to draw attention to the music. Feel like I haven't heard a ton of folk modulating the tempo or time signatures so far, so this definitely gets out a step ahead of the bunch. Great brass sections here again; some lovely soaring leads and the usual groovy bass layered beneath to keep the track grounded. The crescendo as the end approaches with so many other instruments joining is wonderful.
Great work with this, for real. Very enjoyable listen and perfectly executed. Best of luck!
Thank you so much!
I had a ton of fun making these songs as catchy and upbeat as possible since I feel like a lot of jam entries go for softer pieces whilst I want people to be hooked and dancing basically.
The tempo change in Any Bakers Dream was a split second decision at the start of composing that one that I was super happy I did as it makes the song even more enthralling IMO.
hey i remember u from ost comp jam 07!!! this is some really good shit dude
the video for it is pretty as hell too, i also wanted to have a video visualizer for my submission but couldnt make it in time lol
I saw your submission near the end of the list in submission order which made me sad because your submission last time was my #1 absolute favorite overall entry, so I am excited to reach yours!
The video was made by the some gave dev people I made music for and the style of music here is also something they asked for so this was my practice. They made a very pretty video so I was super grateful to them for that!
This is really cool! I totally get the live jazz band vibes you were going for and can absolutely see this being in a game. Especially love the progression of the tracks in intensity over all 3 songs. I feel like some volume automation or velocity randomization on the lead instruments could add a little more realism to them, though that's the only real constructive criticism I have. Very well done!
Thank you!
I used some SWAM instruments for the lead and they are really strange with their velocity changes where low velocity causes them not to be quieter really, but to start slurring which I didn't want. But I understand that the volume of instruments can be pretty stagnant and that's mostly because I wanted them to feel like solos giving it their all. Also time constraints.
I liked this! I can't say it fits the theme very well but if this was all improvised and you let it rock through all the patterns as arranged in the screenshots? Not bad at all. Reminds me of energetic anime game music - maybe Touhou!
TOOT!
Saw the message about the video on Discord. Very sweet release indeed! Really nicely put together, especially for the limited timeframe. Nice job!
