Hey i noticed you were giving in depth reviews on other peoples games so thought you deserved the same respect, its really amazing what youre doing out there!

So just to start this game was absolutely beautiful with the piano and the pixel art, it was a joy just from that to be in the world which is something not alot of games are able to do (i remember from the ludum dare the only game that did this for me was about playing as a rock!) , the game was a absolute joy but of course it isnt perfect, though if you and your team wants to get it to closer here are some things yall will want to conside (i will also include potential solutions but there are infinite ways to solve any problem so dont just go by what i  say):

Problem:

The Dialogue being real time was really unintuitive, after i read the text i found myself clicking to skip but to no avail, sometimes i would click at the same time as it skipped so i thought there might have been some weird timer system until i just let go and realized it was playing on its own. You were safe to give the players a generous amount of time to read which means no one missed any dialogue but still since everyones reading speed varies alot of players would have to sit through some unnecessary precious moments without playing the game.

Solution:

Have some sort of button to skip, usually its just a click/press to fill out the text and another click/press to go to the next text box, this works very effectively since it allows anyone to read at their own pace.

Problem:

The spirits description would go away to fast, for some people it might be the perfect amount of time to read it or even to much time but for me it went by to fast and a couple of times i just had to figure out what changed on my own

Solution:

Dont let the text disappear until the player confirms! it can be a simple button press or if the player attempts move that can make the text go away but just something that gives player the control to read at their own pace. your words arent of any use if no one can read them.

Problem:

The level design can be unintuitive sometimes, I found myself at the rocky area where you had to wall jump early in the game and i thought it was going to be a learning section, after a while i just gave up until later i realized i needed a spirit for that. I also almost did not even notice the top right quarter of the map until i accidentally jumped into it by hopping around, i just assumed it was natural decoration  and not at all something for me to jump on.

Solution:

As for areas where you cant do something that feels like a core mechanic like wall jumping or something like that simple text can go a long way, i know it can ruin some of the silent elegance you might have wanted to pull off without having the text but text can be a really powerful tool when used sparingly and correctly, just something like "you cannot wall jump yet" would have communicated to me that somewhere i can gain the ability to wall jump and when i do i will come back here. maybe thats just a problem for me since this seems to be mostly targeted to metroidvania players and i have only touched like two in my whole life. though as for the platform i nearly missed that feels like a much more universal problem that could happen to anyone whether they play metroidvanias regularly or not, some simple solutions would be to make the platformable parts contrast alot more from the non platformable parts, or have some sort of item or collectible ontop so that i would know "oh i can go there".

Aside from these issues the game remained a solid experience and i enjoyed every second of it, the scope is absolutely baffling for a game jam game in terms of content and literal size. I really hope you develop this further and i cannot wait to see where you take this! will be looking forward to your future releases.

Developer

Hehe, so THAT'S what it feels like! :D Awesome!

Thank you so much for giving this detailed Feedback.

I can give you a few squints at where I am at with fixing them.

  • The left side of the map is almost completely overdrawn, added Detail where there wasn't fixed colors and pixel messes. Starting on the right side now.
  • Made the bough platform that the player has to go on much more noticeable, with a shadow on the ground, more highlights for platforms in general and some leaves, to draw attention.
  •  Spirits (The other Developer) has already fixed the wall jump being too difficult for first time players. Because It's a Game jam game and a one time mechanic, we will require only one button press from now. Simply Jumping on the wall will align you perfectly for the next Jump.
  • I believe he also added the Text box for this problem with the Jump.
  • I will mention to him the possibility of a Dialogue Button. We were so stressed during the Jam, that we didn't have time to implement. As you can see we are one of the last submissions to jam, not out of laziness, we submitted 1 minute before Deadline, I literally had my art and sound programs still open at that point. Everything about the game was kinda rushed by me, except the Character Sprites. And you will see that, hopefully, if we release the post Jam version. Not adding any features for now, sadly, as the Next Jam is around the corner, but Fixing what's there!

haha well thats how jams go, I had to pull another all nighter to release just before the deadline... that was until they added another hour! Still would not have gotten my game to where it was at if i didn't forfeit sleep , had to do the same for the ludum dare.  I see you guys are tackling these problems in very interesting ways, great work!

I'm absolutely blown away by the quality of level design, art and music of this game. Everything works smoothly, the upgrades are really well placed, the game was interesting from beginning to end... and oh god, the quality of the sprites and the animation were AMAZING.  Michael Lueck, I'm your new fan.

Developer(+1)

Naw, thank you, oh so much for the kind words, really made the weekend with 3 hours sleep worth it! :)

Developer(+1)

The game has been updated to a Post Jam version. We put your Name in the Credits as well, you should check it out, it's worth it!

Submitted(+1)

Seems like I didn't notice this game until now - lucky I finally did!

Absolutely amazing artwork, especially that you designed various backgrounds, while all look great!

Loved the idea of receiving skills with progression in the gameplay, this way it's way more fun than just "Get this key, so you can open that door"

20/20

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for the kind works! If I manage to create all the art in time (before the metroid vania month jam) there will be a post jam version, with much better artwork and some updates systems, like that walljump being not as hard.

Submitted

Nice, I'll definitely play that ;D

Submitted(+1)

Really amazing job guys! The art looks gorgeous, the cave paintings look real. The piano was upbeat, a bit too loud on my end, but it didn’t got boring, and was very pleasing to listen to!

(+1)

Wow. It's very nice!

The idea isn't very original, but the game it's very well done. I get a lot of Megaman ZX vibes from this... The atmosphere, the background parallax, the intriguing and complex level structure... it's generally very nice!

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I don't have anything to add to the other reviews except that if I played it with my little cousins, they'd like to be able to read the text at their own pace.

But apart from that, like the others, wonderful art, snappy controls. Really nice game !

Submitted(+1)

this is an amazingly complete game for such a short time. i really liked the whole unlocking abilities things, the level design was very sensible, and this is one of the most balanced game control in a game jam platformer i ever played (except for bouncing off walls which was pretty difficult ;) )
the music loop is very palatable and the art is very impressive for such a short time, although i'd suggest grouping the colors more so its easier to tell between the bg assets and the interactive parts.

overall great job! :)

Developer

We are working on a post Jam release where already a lot of your suggestions where taken into consideration! Thanks for the nice words and useful feedback! :)

(+1)

Wow I am completly blown away from this game. I'm wondering how it is possible to create  such amazing art! I also choose pixel art but it is so much harder than you would expect it. The game mechanics are nice, the jump feels great and the music is beautiful and matches somehow the game! I have a lot of respect for pulling out this quantity and quality in only 2 days.

Developer(+1)

Nice review, thanks a lot! It was a hard time of Crunching, we plan on doing a release of this Jam Game that is more in line with what we envisioned. (Which we where 100% sure we couldn't finish haha)

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely beautiful game. The animation and style of the wolves was amazing and made it really enjoyable to play. I liked finding the spirits to unlock new areas, it would have been nice to have more places to explore but I can see that would have taken a lot of time as each place has unique art. Great game and a great submission to the jam.

Developer(+1)

Hehe, jeah in terms of sheer amount of places to explore and things to find, our game can't hold a candle to yours. It was kind of necessary for the environment to look like that because the wolves looked out of place in almost every tileset I put them in. That's why the game area is quite concise... The entire Level is just a 32 Layer 1920x1080 pixels picture.

Submitted(+1)

Well I think the wolves not fitting into the tilesets was the best thing to happen for your game cause it made you focus on a really important part, glad it all worked out so well

Developer

we are currently working on a post jam release where the complaints will be tackled , including updated environment graphics (they already look soo much better than in the current verion) a way simplified walljump and a couple of sounds.

Submitted(+1)

The music omg I left the game open in the background just to enjoy it ( I need a link to the song like right now!!)

The Art is phenomenal and the animations are on point, the boxed skybox kinda looked out of place.

The Game is nice in general no bugs and tiny feel for a rogue like type of platformer, the wall jumping is all over the place it took me couple of mins to pass that area.

Well done game <3

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the Feedback! Jeah the Skybox was a little bit last minute. Initially we planned all elements to be part of different Parallax but had to scrap it entirely, which kinda sucked, because I had to redraw a lot of stuff, including this Sky Background.

I'm sorry you (and many others) had problems with the Wall Jump. It's a thing that you get the hang of once and don't notice it anymore, this makes it hard to play test for such a small game, where you only have to use it once the entire game. If the game was longer, there would not be much of a problem but for such a concise experience, it hurts the game overall, at least from my perspective.

Submitted

The jumping behaviour is very good. That was actually the best part of the game. Graphic and sound are good too!

Developer

I guess it's important to get the game feel good first :)

Thanks for the feedback and playing. Had a little bit of a time issue with the art.

Submitted(+1)

Really enjoyed the game, very nice atmosphere and relaxing gameplay. Hope you're gonna be thinking about making this something more than a 2 days game ^_^.

Submitted(+1)

Oh boy, this is such a nice game. Controls are so responsive and music was the best part. I enjoyed playing it. Even I made a game based on pack of dogs, but yours is so much better. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Hail to the pixel art! Whoever the designer of this pixels is lucky to not being close to me otherwise i would have chained him to my basement rofl. Well done !

Developer

I take this as a huge compliment, alright?  haha

Submitted(+1)

Top points for you! OMG what a beautiful game. and that song? I almost couldn't stop listening to it.

Great game!! The gameplay felt so smooth as well

(+1)

I loved looking at the game, it was very aesthetically pleasing and interesting to walk around and explore. The movement was very fluid and easy to control. I feel this has one of the better movement I have seen from games in this jam. The game reminded me of old school exploration games. My little sister would have LOVED this as she is obsessed with wolves. And I thought the howl ability was adorable.

Developer

Hehe, thanks for the kind words! It's a bit rough around the edges. Most players seem to miss the platform that leads towards the top left part of the map, which is crucial. The map is designed like an X shape.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I love the music man! Awesome art and movement as well
Although I wasnt able to progress much, Ill try once again. A restart button would be helpful tho
Im still listening to the music

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for showing game play! We didn't implement a Restart button, because there is No possibilities of getting stuck in game play, need to solve puzzle and find all 4 puppies. Thank you for Playing it.

TIP: if you hold the jump button you can jump higher, I say this because you missed a platform at the beginning when you tried to jump to it.

Submitted(+1)

I got it! Here's the new video :) Loved the art, the power up ideas, really well implemented! And again I love the music a lot!

Developer(+1)

Nice! Thank you :)

Where is the theme??

Developer(+1)

The theme was pack. The game is about a wolf pack.

The Gameplay is about "packing your wolf pack" and go back to home.

Where isn't the theme??

Submitted(+1)

I would love for this to become a full game and not just a 2 day game. Absolutely stunning the art and music is. The game play also out of the world. It fit the theme and was very similar to other games but was also special and unique in its own way. Good Job, you earned a rare 5 stars on all themes!!!

Developer

Wow thank you so much! :)

(+1)

Criminally underrated entry IMO. Some of the vistas in this game where really stunning, the music was beautiful, the controls where snappy and everything just works.

The progression was thoughtful, you placed the Powerups at a reasonable places and locked progression just the right way. I particularly loved how each area had a theme, if intentional or not. Howling in the Forest, Strength in the Mountains, Agility among the Treetops and Sunlight at the highest point!

Sadly those "Spirits" where quite small, they looked pretty funky and I wanted to see them better.

At first I was quite surprised by the fitting theme song playing during the Intro, it took me by surprise that it both works for the Intro and Gameplay so well, even though it's  just a Piano.

If I didn't see you submitting 1 min before Deadline, I'd say you have worked on this for more than 48 hours but damn. Great job if you did.

Btw. I read those comments about the Walljump and I had that problem the first time in my playthrough as well. It doesn't work as it does in other games. But honestly? In my second go it kinda clicked and felt rhythmic and right. And the animation on that was really satisfying.

Wished for some more sounds. I liked what I heard!

Developer

Wow thank you! I'm kind of a loss for words here haha.

I put it as a little coherency easter egg and thought nobody would notice, but dang, you found out about the Spirits hehe.GJ
