To be honest I got a divided opinion about the game. In technical terms I'm simply amazed, the game runs so smoothly and music is awesome. In terms of graphics, personally I didn't like it... it's a 3D game with some kind of 2D filter and that always makes me mad. But feelings aside, this is an awesome job for a single person. Congratulations. :)

Amazing style and feel. I love it :)

Really curious about how the grainy overlay effect was created.

Developer

Heya Cuboid,

It's a custom shader. Basically, you render the screen in normal color, then you filter across all of the pixels and figure out which of the four colors it's closest to. I think I found the original code on shadertoy.com, then modified for my own projects. :)

Cool :)

Now I want to try implementing something like that sometime...

Btw thanks for the website it looks super helpful

I see you already win the jam man! awesome graphics using such low number of colors, plus the game is so fun to play. I hope you win this jam man :D

Gotta love the dithered 4 color display.

I don't think no game boy could have run this, but it's fun ... even if I was stuck at then end missing a key :)

Rules and jam stuff aside, so damn fun.  Just real good.

nice!!! but i cant find the last key

The maze is randomly generated every time, so it's QUITE possible there's a bug where sometimes the number of keys don't match the number of doors. :P

I will investigate.

This look s like a good game, despite being outside the rules.Good job.

I did notice that holding 'x' down lets out a stream of bullets until I moved which is cool but probably unintended.

I couldn't give it a good review even though it looks amazing because of the total disregard for the limitations.

Developer

Hey Redstonie! I tried my best to follow the limitations. Which one did I break. ?!

Well the nostalgia boy itself contains more than four colors, and also all the different shades of green count as different colors. It looks great though. Keep up the good work!

I feel like the gameboy is just page art, not the game, and doesn't count. The game itself I'm pretty sure is 128x128 and uses only 4 shades of green..

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, the gameboy overlay is just a surrounding bit, but you've got a great point that it might be outside the rules. :)

Plus, I obviously had a bunch of code built up from another project or the thing couldn't have been done in such a short window. I don't care about winning. The jam was great to help me get the thing (kinda) done. Thanks for trying it! :D

The limitations/theme were brutally slain in this submission, the aesthetic appears highly polished

Fantastic look, totally on point!
