This was amazing! The art is phenomenal and everything is really cohesive, like the art style, music, player controls, and level design all feel like they fit together really well. One interesting thing that stood out to me were the outlines around enemies or the page collectibles, having them be flashing colors really popped to me, when they could have been just normal white outlines. So smart!
I gave it a few tries but couldn't manage to beat the final boss, but it's ok, I had a great time! That shark lol
Some fabulous graphics on show here!
That was a massive lore dump in the intro and I found it hard to follow.
Great use of game juice!
I felt like you were introducing the first few enemy types too fast. Give me some time to get used to one before throwing the next one into the pot.
That chicken bomb is everything I ever wanted. However, the boss was too easy. I just walk up and spam attack, then I'm basically guaranteed to win. I'm also not sold on self-damage for the chickens.
A lot of the jumps felt like they were right at the edge of my maximum jump height and range, which didn't feel very good.
I appreciated your level design and room variety keeping me using my different abilities and the different challenges, keeps things from getting boring.
I missed the checkpoint before going into the boss room, lost all my progress since the beginning of the game, then didn't want to redo it all so I quit, Pro tip: force the checkpoint by placing the room immediately before the boss, not as an optional room to the left of the boss.
I'd prefer more checkpoints in general, but I'm also the type of player who is averse to super difficult games. If it's working for your target audience, then fantastic.
You either must've crunched like crazy, or Construct3 is super fast, or both. Either way, this is quite polished and one of my favorites.
Hello,
Wow the good old days feeling is really strong here. Outstanding work! I liked the level design, the art, the music, the difficulty.
As a subtle thing, I think that the charged basic attack is too OP and it has too much range. It is so good that it makes me want to slow down my pace quite a lot and wait for the bar to charge even in between two enemies. Maybe should it be less OP?
But it is so subtle that it didn't prevent me from enjoying the game. Congratulations!
Cheers
Thank you very much for the feedback, I'm glad you liked the game. I had little time to work on balancing the game, but to give you an idea, the full attack was EVEN STRONGER. After the jam I intend to make some adjustments to this and other things.
haha nice, it means that you had already identified this challenge, that's good! Everything under control.
Don't hesitate to let me know after you work more on the game, I would love to try it again after those adjustments.
Great job
Looks and feels very great you did tremendous job here. There are not enough checkpoints, though, given the difficulty spike and amount of new types of enemies and surfaces after even the first one. nevertheless, this is very solid entry.
Thanx for the feedback! :D
I love the Castlevania feel! There is a spot where you can't reobtain pages making it so that you have to get a deathless playthrough in order get the good ending. And its really, really hard to do that. The statues are a bit buggy, I've noticed, and can sometimes softlock the game. Kind of interesting how you need to guess if the spirit is good or evil. Still I loved the game (I'm a fan of the first Castlevania), and the hidden powerups were fun! I completed the game without dying and collected all 100 of those darned pages! (And with one hp remaining)
Wow! Congratulations on finishing and catching the true ending! The secret bosses were created at the last minute, so I still need to make adjustments to their schedule. As for the pages, I will remove them or reduce their quantity so that they can enter the checkpoint schedule. Thanks for playing! :)
Great game! This one is super polished all around. The pixel art is top notch & the audio is great. The controls feel really tight & hits feel impactful. I noticed some secret passageways were included, which is always a plus. I died shortly after discovering it and had to start from the beginning. The only suggestion I have is to add saves or checkpoints.
I'm glad you liked the game. If you pause the game, you will see two checkpoints on the map represented by the letter "C". I didn't put any before the first boss because I thought the path was too short for that.
Here's my feedback video for you.
Thank you very much for the video feedback. As for the pages, they only affect the end of the game, they are not necessary to advance. In the system I created to create Checkpoint, it was impossible to save each of the 100 pages and their positions, so I chose not to register any. I'll probably remove or reduce them to a much smaller amount when I do the update so I can save them at the checkpoint.
Ahh ok. I'll put this on my list of games to play after the jam ends so I can get the full experience.
The +
The intro is very well managed!
- The tone of the story is consistent, funny without going overboard, and has a good 80' vibe (a TV classic that inspires our hero). I really like the design of the skeletons
- Very pretty, I like the enemies and the animations work very well, objects well highlighted, etc.
- Cool Chicken Boss
- I love the chicken throwing attack <3
The -
- 'x' for jump and 'space' for the menu, I don't find it ergonomic. I reflexively press space to jump (I'm not a keyboard player)
- Boss chicken can be killed quite easily if you stick him you can make his chickens explode on him and chain him quite easily. He could peck us with his beak or his wings to inflict damage on us or push us away.
- No Respawn after the chicken boss
In summary, very good experience, looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you very much for the feedback! I wish I had made more attacks for the chicken, but it was one of the things that had the most bugs in the programming, if you see the old version of the game you will understand some of them. I ended up leaving it like this but in a future update I might add more resources to it. I didn't checkpoint near it because I thought the path to it was too short, and the checkpoint is located a few rooms after the wall that opens when the chickens attack.
The art is amazing! Especially the intro cutscene. Love the lighting and characters. Everything feels super polished and the attacks have a lot of power. Love the monster designs and death animations as well! The only thing that didn't quite fit the vibe of the gameplay was the music which felt like a lighter playful tone, when the gameplay is pretty intense!!
I died after I got my first weapon upgrade and was backtracking after the first boss was defeated... and then when I hit "continue" on the game over screen, it started me from the beginning with 000/100 and no weapons :( I don't know if I misclicked or not... I may have pressed X (attack) instead of (Z) Jump, so maybe that input was interpreted as "No" by the game? But of course I wanted to continue! I definitely would never choose "restart immediately with 0%" after I die.
I'm glad you liked the game. As for music, I'm not a musician, so I tried to do the best with the resources I had at hand, hahah. Pages are not a necessary resource to advance in the game, they only affect the final cutscene. In the system I created for the checkpoints, it was impossible to save each page and its position, so I chose not to register any. In a future update I might reduce the number of them so I can save them at checkpoints. Thank you very much for the feedback.
This game is really really really great! The only feedback I have is the jump feels a bit too weighty at times and the lack of a save feature. Other than that, this was REALLY good and hope you continue this!
Thank you very much. The heavy jump is a direct reference to the style of the first Castlevanias, where the character seemed to be made of lead. As for saves, if you pause the game and access the map you will see the game's checkpoints, represented by a "C". I didn't put any before the first boss because I thought the path was too short for that.
Wow, the art is really cool! The controls feel great and there's some juice to the effects! Having the chicken as a sub weapon is funny lol
Thanx for your feedback! :D
This was a visual TREAT! Incredible animations, beautiful color palette. Well done!
I loved the gameplay, platforming and combat felt fluid and responsive. And the chicken boss was brilliant. I wish the chicken bomb upgrade wouldn't damage me - they seemed to always run toward me and blow me up. And it was a bit frustrating to start from the beginning each time. I didn't make it past the chicken boss, but I will be back!
Nice job :D
I'm glad you liked the game, thank you very much. If you pause the game and access the map, you will see that there are two checkpoints, represented with a "C", but as the path to the chicken is short, I didn't think it was necessary to place a checkpoint before it.
I think this game rules, but I will say that I only really don't like is that you have to go back to beginning if you die to the Chicken. Great sprites tho for real.
Thank you very much. The game has two checkpoints that are symbolized on the map with a "C". I didn't place a Checkpoint before the first Boss because I thought the path to it was very short and the player would have no problem turning back, but there is an accessible checkpoint a few rooms after the blocked passage that you access with the Chicken's ability.
