Did you work in a team?
I worked alone, did the programming & I used sound generator and existing assets for the sound.

It was quite fun :)

Was the resolution a challenge?
It was ok once I had the rough idea - I had participated in LOWREZJAM before already so I was used to working in this resolution

What did you learn?
I build an animation system on top of the Dragonruby APIs - did pixel art somewhat "seriously" for the first time - and also tried some polishing like screenshake and health bar animations

Very simple gameplay, you rapidly get the cadence of things and the game turns a bit boring. A bit more variety on slime moves and attacks, or increasing the number of blobs to increase dificulty would have helped.

Developer

Thanks! Yes, you’re totally right… The Slime was originally supposed to have more behavior stages… but well… time :D

fun game and the art is look nice. but it's too short, maybe you can add a variety of slime attacks so the game isn't too boring.

good job.

Developer(+1)

Thanks, yes you’re totally right. If possible I wanted to do the fight a bit longer…

Submitted(+1)

Pretty good if a bit short ^^ Id have definitely kept playing if there were more BIGGER slimes to kill haha

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yes original idea to have a gradually (or maybe even explosively) escalating boss fight with an initially unremarkable slime :D

The nice thing about a larger character is that you get a cleaner image. I found your “serious” pixel art to be a success :) The flamethrower animation is also super pleasing.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Yes I worked quite a bit on the flamethrower particles… I’m quite happy with the result!

Great idea and execution, the moving camera helps a lot given the resolution constraint. As others have said there are many ways the game could be expanded, for example by adding more slime patterns or more complex terrain that makes it harder to kill the slime. Not much else to say, the game is well polished, I just wish it was a bit longer :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you some much for your feedback! Yes the original dream was to turn this into a gradually escalating boss battle that starts as a somewhat unremarkable slime at first….

I liked the ambiance and the core gameplay loop, but it ended too soon!

Burning things is always fun for me. I have always loved pyromancers in different genres of games. It was the same for the game and I enjoyed fighting against a monster with a flamethrower! I just wish the game was longer.

I liked how our character slow down while attacking, I think certain mechanics and enemy types could be built on that element. I also liked the simple attack pattern of the slug. However, it did not have readable anticipation frames so it required a great amount of attention to dodge it. I also liked how you included a well-fit ambiance sound effect!

Solid entry, I hope you build on the idea after the jam!

Developer(+1)

Wow thanks for the detailed feedback

Yes the short length of the game is really a pity - I wanted to turn it into somewhat of a longer boss fight that started harmless…

Some clearer anticipation frames (I guess something like stretching back a bit before actually slinging towards the player) would have been nice - that’s a good idea :)

I originally intended that “wobbly-wobbly” after a hit to be some kind of a telegraph but seems it turned out too generic and visually unrelated to the attack…

Some good stuff to think about! Thanks again

Cool particles when using the flame thrower, also really liked your sound design, it's a bit too bad that the 64x64 pixels limits the gameplay a bit making it hard to see where you're going.

Developer(+1)

Thanks :)

The camera design was a little bit tricky…. I fear the character scale was a bit too big for such a small canvas after all ;)

Super graphics and animations! But when I killed the slime, it disappointed me that it was all. Your game could be successful if it was longer. I hope that you'll create something longer next time.

Developer

Thanks!

Yes I wanted it to be more like a stronger boss fight with maybe several phases but it was a bit too much for me in these 2 weeks

Really nice camera shake and flame thrower particles.

The pixel art is really crisp with good color selection too!

Developer

Thank you! This time I really wanted to add some juicy effects to I spent quite a bit time on that ;)

And I’m also not too unhappy with the pixel art… Improvement comes very slowly but I can feel it….

That is one angry slime when he gets set on fire! Definitely an "oh crap" moment the first time he leapt at me! This was neat and I like how at first I couldn't figure out how to beat him but eventually figured out three different strategies that all worked. Nice depth of mechanics!

Developer(+1)

Wow thank you for spending that much time with my game :) It turned out much more simplistic than I originally imagined… but I’m glad you had fun and a little challenge with it!

Submitted(+1)

I kicked that slime's ass, he didn't stand a chance lol

Also obligatory tf2 reference

Developer

Haha, good job!

Sorry I never played TF2… Does any of the characters/game elements look similar to something from TF2? :D

The flame thrower is very satisfying.

Developer

Thanks :) Yes that’s one of the elements I wanted to get right… If I had spent a bit more time I’d probably tried to make the flame particles collide and stop with walls

I like the art! The you win page flew by because I was holding space though so I couldn't read it

Developer

Thanks :)

Yes just after submitting I realized I should have better chosen an otherwise unused key for the ending screens…..

That flamethrower effect 🔥🔥🔥

Good job getting it together. The character pixel art and the effects are very effective.

Adding another wrinkle to the gameplay loop might help to keep the engagement levels high. Maybe 2 sludges so you have to watch your back?

Developer(+1)

Thanks :) My original idea was greatly to improve on the movement and attack patterns of the Slime ;) This thing is basically acts as my very very late Boss Battle Jam entry too :D
