How does your game fit the theme?
The game is about a space station that was isolated to keep a dangerous computer virus from spreading, and a single soldier who can stop the virus. I used "isolation" in the context of a virus (computer virus in this case), and being alone.

Game's good and fun, but the control layout is getting in the way. Getting your hand off the movement keys makes the player fight the keyboard more than the actual enemies.

The falling boxes doing actual damage was a nice bit of attention to detail.

Probably one of the most interesting games due to its creative gravity feature.

Liked the visuals and the gameplay

Keep it up.

Hope you will play and rate my game as well.

The gravity mechanic is very cool. I had fun with this game. Just that the control layout wasnt great so it was a bit dificult sometimes. But overall, cool game!

GAMEPLAY
I enjoyed the variety of the levels and of course the boss fight at the end. That is always a nice end bonus. The gravity shift feature worked well, although it wasn’t very original. The controls could be improved for smoother gameplay as I sometimes found them confusing and mis hit the C key for example several times.

ART STYLE / VISUALS
The art style was coherent and good.

AUDIO / SOUND DESIGN
The sound effects were adequate, but adding a more energetic, up-tempo background track could further enhance the game's atmosphere in a future update.

INNOVATION
Not really applicable.

THEME
The theme was lightly included in the game. Check.

Nice job and a good fun platformer to play đź’Ş

If I had a dollar for every gravity flipping platformer I’ve played in a GoedWare Game Jam, well, I’d have a few dollars (#9’s theme was broken physics so it was a popular take lol) :p

honestly this stands out as one of the best I’ve seen in that regards. I think if you had limited yourself to tile-based art like the classics I bet you could’ve really made the look sing, but it’s reminding me more of old computer games more than NES vibes. I feel like shooting up and down wasn’t introduced, just a cool thing to discover?

Definitely think there’s a lot of fun here, though, it’s a really solid entry!

like everyone I did not gel with the controls - my particular keyboard setup makes it impossible to use arrow keys along with others, so I ended up having my left hand on wasd and space, and my right hand on C and V, that worked out okay. Generally I do think left hand movement right hand actions is more common, since that’s how controllers have been setup for the last 40 or so years. So I suspect you arrow-key loving heretics are in a minority :P Definitely why rebindable keys is a great feature, though it can be a bit of a headache in every engine.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Glad you enjoyed yourself. Yes,  shooting up and down was not properly introduced, my bad, only the level design hints at it. Now I wonder how long it took people to realized that.

"Heretics" sounds like an overstatement; if so, I would have never added the option to use WASD xd; however, I forgot to add other options for the shooting and gravity buttons. I mainly tested the game with a gamepad. People around me don't really  play FPS or computer games that much, I did not realize WASD  was a standard untill some years ago, and because I didn't have an issue with Arrow keys, I figured people would not have an issue adjusting to it, I was wrong, muscle memory, habits, are too powerful. Also, I didn't know people had issues with their arrow keys like you, sorry.

And about the NES graphics, well, I didn't have enough time 🤣. I know my game sucks in terms of graphics, and no music, only sound effects. I focused on the gameplay and level design a lot, even making other people play me game to find bugs and parts of the design they didn't like. Anyway, thanks for the comment.

Yeah i’m just joking with the heretics part lol, it’s not that serious!

No need to apologize about the layout, I could have busted out a normal keyboard, switched to my laptop, or taken like 5 minutes to alter my keyboard layout to accommodate using arrow keys and keyboard keys at the same time - I use the arrow keys constantly in coding and stuff, just never in conjunction with typing.

I actually think you’re selling yourself a little short about the graphics, they’re functional, have some unique ideas (like the stag beetle mech…. assuming that’s what it’s supposed to be lol), and aren’t difficult to read or understand which is a surprisingly common issue. Of course, as someone who always overprioritizes art over the gameplay and level design, I’m just jealous of those who do the opposite :D

Developer(+1)

Yes, it´s supposed to be a stag beetle. And Yes At least I tried to make the graphics functional xd, glad I succeeded. I'm working on the graphics for a post jam update, tho.

It was quite fun to play, especially liked the boss battle. The controls were just a little difficult to get used to. Nice game!

Developer(+1)

yes, the controls seem to be the main complain xd. Nobody seems to have gamepads for some reason and of course most people are used to WASD type of button layout and my game is more Arrow key oriented which I just found comfortable as I'm used to it, but other peoppe aren't, which is understandable. I really need to add kat binding or more options for the button layout. After the jam is over, I'll keep updating the game, I'm planing to make a full release of this game in the future.

Good game with good visuals, but the controls were odd! Also the theme is not fitted well with the gameplay.

Developer

I mostly trsted the game with a gamepad, but I never found it uncomfortable with the arrowkeys and stuff. How would you change the controls?

Submitted(+1)

Played and rated!

Really loved playing this, the mechanics are simple and super fun. The way you mixed systems to make it be able to use that gravity mechanic in different ways felt nice!

Don't really have a downside, I think just the environment art could use some work.

Great submission :)

Developer

thank you, I was just really focued on the code and level design, aslo the last day of development, I started feeling sick. Glad you enjoy my game, I'll keep updating it, I'm planning on making it a full release with proper graphics and sound.

I liked the game , the control scheme was a bit weird C to shoot took me time to get used to , but I liked the art style the concept and sfx , good game !

Developer

Yes, I just don't like the WASD and and shift and control to play 2d platformers, although you can use WASD instead of the arrowkey if you want. Also, you can use a gamepad if you want, the game fully supports it. Glad you liked me game :)

Submitted(+1)

I like this game. Simple but fun to play! It takes a bit of time to get used to the controls, especially the button to switch gravity which isn't in the most comfortable position. The boss fight is nice. I like the fact that there are multiple phases and it gets harder towards the end. The sound effects are fine, but some 8-bit background music would have been a nice addition :)

Developer (1 edit)

Glad you had fun. What key layout would you prefer? I  tested this game mostly with a gamepad, the keyboard layout I used is the same I use when playing platformers in emulators and such. Thanks for the feedback.

Submitted

I would probably use shift to shift the gravity and a key on the right of the keyboard to shoot (like J, K or L). I like to use my left thumb for WASD and the jump on the space bar, and I don't want to move it to the V key, especially in sections where you need to jump and change the gravity quickly after.

Developer

I'm wondering if you were using WASD to ply my game instead of the arrows keys because it was not intended to be played that way. Either way, I have to learn how to do key binding because everybody seems to be used to something different.

Nice Game, Please try our game :)

Developer

sure, when I get home I'll try it out.

This game was pretty fun once I found out how it controls (I didn't have a gamepad at the ready). The gravity mechanic was used well and the artstyle reminded me of the 8-bit greats. The only bits of criticism I have are that the soundscape was a tiny bit lackluster, although that helped underline the isolation themeing and that it took a while to understand the controls. All in all a fun little game that has huge potential!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! Yes, I mostly play with gamepads and I am not a big fan of WASD controls, I'm an arrow key guy. what do you mean soundscape? Also, I'll keep updating the game because I think it's the best I've done so far.

Submitted

I mean the general audio in the game. The SFX suffice in my opinion but some music or ambient noise would have been nice.

Developer(+1)

aah, I understand now, I just didn't have time to add that, but I wanted to x

Submitted(+1)

It's a gamejam, it'd be heaven if we actually were to include everything we wanted do xD

It was a fun game with some neat level moments, I enjoyed dropping foes into spikes. The start of the boss fight felt a little too sloggy, but the boss fight was a nice conclusion. I like the interpretation of a computer virus you have to 'isolate' (through destruction!) so the final boss being an angry computer amused me.

Developer

Hahaha, glad you found it funny, and thank you for playing :)

Submitted

It's quite enjoyable to play, but I found it slightly off-theme.

Developer

Thanks for playing. Only the story is theme related, being alone in a Space station that is isolated because of a virus. Isolation in term of a virus, but yes, it could have been better, the graphics don't help xd. Glad you like it tho.

Submitted(+1)

It's a really great game, I love the VVVVV gravity flip; that felt really nice with this kind of game. It was a little hard to read my health; it kind of blended into the background a bit, but honestly, that's a really small thing. It did feel like the game didn't really fit the theme? Like it was kind of shoehorned in? But the game's great either way, and it felt like an old-school platformer in all the right ways!

Developer

Thank you for playing and your feedback. I was too focused on code, and didn't have much time to work on the graphics and menus. The game is actually inspired by Metal storm, a somewhat obscure NES game. I wanted to add isolation to the mechanics, but I didn;t know how so I ended it to the story, isolation in the context of a virus and being alone fighting in a space station, I understand if you feel like the game doesn't deliver on the theme aspect.
