This was one of the most fun entries for me! Would love to see it expanded upon. I never really experienced the haunting effect, maybe because it was easy enough to win without killing the other players?
Also I hit a bug where all the enemies got stuck and stopped moving, but also didn't despawn
Thanks for playing, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I've already got updates underway for post jam, it definitely needs more tuning to keep the action around the player. And thanks for the bug report, AI is also another place that needs improving.
I can't believe I almost missed this entry! It's so cool, it reminds me a lot of a game I played as a kid called Generally, it has the same view and control style. The graphics are amazing, and the haunted mechanic is also very cool.
Congrats, if you add features for this game in the future let me know, I would love to play again!
Btw, I liked the shader caching loader, I may steal this for my next games :D
Thanks for the review, it makes me especially happy that you like the graphics, your art is always top notch! I think I read that 4.4 will have even better shader caching so hopefully it gets easier for everyone soon. This game initially would feel unplayable without it so I recommend it. More improvements/content is definitely coming, thanks for the support!
Love that you put in a shader compilations step. I might had a few stutters here and there in the webbuild (chrome) did you add lighting to the compilation step? we found out in a previous game of ours, that lighting seems to make a difference, so that we ended up, doing the compilation step with included light for the particles etc. to get rid of the last stutter.
cool game, cool AI drivers, i think the graphics are already good. steering is fine. but maybe give the car some inertia or something, because it stops to aprupt if i let go of the W key, it stops nearly instant.
I think your game would increase your ratings bigtime if you would have added some SFX and Music. There is plenty of high quality free stuff here on Itch.io in the Assets, or maybe on opengameart.com etc.
Adding sound and music usually doesn`t take up that much time but improves the game significantly.
You did a great job! keep going!
Thanks for playing and all the feedback! The shader comp is actually a full AI level trying to hit all the cases but I definitely need to start testing on more hardware, and putting in graphics settings. I might ping you later on the what lighting complication looks like; this jam really exposed how little I know about lights and shadows!
I've already got a few fixes ready to go post jam and inertia is one of them. I was actually on track to do audio the last day but then found a game-breaking bug and lost all my final hours to that instead so next time, gonna put something in mid-jam instead; having nothing is big bummer. Thanks again for the support!
I sincerely hope you finish the game! With a little sound effects and music this could really be a fun experience :) Congratulations on this entry ;)
I'm glad you liked it! I was bummed I didn't get to any audio but it will definitely be getting updated post jam (probably several times). I really appreciate the support!
Fun racing game. Really liked the visuals and the controls once I got used to them were smooth and responsive, although the immediate breaking felt too similar to driving a Telsa :) (i.e. left the gas and the car stops)
Would have been great to even have a little bit of sound (I know time is the number enemy of good games in these jams)
Thanks for submitting would love to see the final product
Thanks for playing! I actually added a little coasting locally already, as well as other improvements. I always intend to work on past jams (technically I still intend to) but this one might finally be the one. Thanks again for the feedback!
OOO a racing game hehe. I like the remote contrl car feel of the game. Took me a while to learn how to steer without crashing but after that it was smooth sailing. Visually the game was pretty impressive! Sadly it was a bit laggy on my computer. I like the sparks effect when the car slides on the guard, and the little jump the car does when hit. I don’t think the power ups had much effect on the outcome of the race; as long as the player didn’t crash it was pretty easy to win hehe. This game has a lot of potential and is pretty fun to just drive around. Overall, it was a pretty chill little racing game. Good job!
Thanks for playing! I appreciate the feedback, and the reminder to add graphics/resolution settings, especially as I get deeper into shaderland.
This game was sick!! I didn't expect to see a racing game but I love it! You've already made comments in the description but the lack of music, SFX and tracks was a bit sad and I think would've amplified the gameplay sooo much! Keen to see if you add any of this post jam!
Some feedback:
Didn't really feel the "Haunted" theme, the messing with controls is a great idea but I didn't really feel like it made that much of a difference. That and I feel like most of the time, I didn't kill anyone and was just flooring it.
The items (bullet, shield, money) felt a bit misplaced. I feel like you tried to make it so, to get the items, you have to go out of the way for them. However, when the driving is simple and doesn't have handbrake/drift, slipstream or any other catch-up mechanic, it felt like too much effort to go out of my way for them.
Colliding with other cars felt so painful! It just killed every little bit of momentum and felt like it held you back way more than it should've
On the contrary, being too far ahead was also a bit boring. I was almost slowing down so I can make it more intense
Honestly very very cool game!
Thanks for playing, this really made my day! All good points, especially on the car slowdown. I had wanted a slowdown on rails but cheesily made it slow on any collision but ramming other cars is fun so should be encouraged. I've already got some of this improved locally, hopefully you can give it another try with post jam improvements.
That was fun! I think the difficulty could have been ramped up a bit, had to deliberatly drop back to the ai players to be able to see the haunting mechanic, but I can see how hard that would be to implement, well done!
Might just be my setup but I had to download the desktop version, the web player wouldn't work.
Thanks for playing! Yeah, AI is the top priority to improve post jam. Did the game not start or crash on the web? The web shader caching is MUCH slower than the desktop, and I assume made more complicated being part of a the web browser so I'm also wondering if it just needed a bit more time. I'm very excited, I believe I read the 4.4 will have significantly improved shader caching so I'm hoping that will dramatically reduce the hacks I'm doing to make it work right now. Thanks again for the feedback!
It went through the Godot load screen then just a grey screen after that, I think it's just a case of waiting for web support to improve in the engine, also very excited seeing how far Godot has gone in just the last year
Wasn't expecting a micromachines style racing game to appear in the jam but I can say I had a good amount of fun with it. Loved the effects going on in the background, kind of wish there was some sort of music or sound effects playing.
I didn't really understand what the haunting does. From what I could tell my screen goes red and I take damage or something? Might have been able to understand it more if it wasn't so easy to escape from the pack. Was fairly consistently getting ahead by the start of lap 2 and from there I would never fall back.
Otherwise though this was a lot of fun, awesome work!
Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the feedback! The haunting messes with your controls, much more apparent on straightaways. I had ideas for more but didn't have time to get to them, just the like audio. Better AI (and varied car stats) is top of the list for post jam fixes to help keep you in the action.
I liked the maps and the racing was fun! The ghost racers were really cool. The main thing I wish I had more of in this game was interaction with the AI - I was driving pretty far in front of the other racers the whole time so I didn't get a ton of opportunities to shoot them or bump into them. Overall great submission, I also liked the isometric view of the level.
Thanks for playing! Yeah, the AI is at the top of my list of things to improve. I also had ideas for things like land mines that partially implemented but plan on updating post jam.
Awesome game! Good submission, didn't expect a racer at all! Shame you didn't manage to squeeze in audio, it would benefit that game greatly I think.
My only critique would be that the haunted aspect does not seem too relevant in the gameplay, imho. I played all tracks winning without ever having to kill a car, I did it kill at last just to see what happens.
Maybe collissions should cause damage or you can push the opponents off a cliff (even if not intended) so that they haunt you more easily... idk
Thanks for playing! I hadn't thought of removing some of the rails, that's a great idea! There were a number of other haunting effects I wanted, like spawning a ton of land mines (a hazard I didn't manage to get all the way in) most of which are fake but a few are real so you'd need to be care which you avoided. Contact collision is something I also wanted but ran out of time. Basically, all very fair points, I really appreciate the feedback!
Love what you've got going graphically, and the steering felt fun and go-kart like. I wish the car didn't instantly stop when you let go of forward, it would be cool if there was coasting.
Thanks for the kind words, I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted but I really tried to make something more cohesive than my previous entry so am glad you liked it. Yeah, totally agree on the coasting, so much, in fact, that I just added that locally for a post jam update. Thanks for playing!
Having the destroyed cars turn into ghosts that keep driving and then try to screw over other players is a really creative and cool idea for a twist on a standard racing game. Great job!
