Never thought typing in a terminal could be so thrilling! I will say, as someone who isn't the strongest typist, it got a little tedious having to retype the tests each time. The saving the last command was great for fixing typos, but a full command history like a lot of terminals have would have been a nice touch. Also, wasn't loving the music at first but found myself bobbing my head to it after a while, so I'd say that's a win. There is clearly a high amount of effort on display here, from the realistic commands and operating system to the details and jargon that each command spits out. Not sure about the appeal beyond programmers/people already comfortable with using a command line interface, but for me this was a really great and charming experience.
After reading the other comments, apparently you can copy/paste? Didn't work for me, though I was copying text outside of the game (I had written the commands down in another window bc I didn't think you could copy/paste lol).
Thanks for the feedback! Looking back I definitely should have prioritized the full terminal history and maybe had some kind of popup alert regarding copying and pasting (CTRL+C and CTRL+V). The music is definitely a bit rough lol. I built out the spotify window and the song in the last hour before submitting, so that is very rushed.
Thanks for checking it out!
Very interesting take on the theme.
I did not read which wildcards you used so was only half expecting the through the teeth one.
The interface was simple yet effective (thank god for copy/paste) and the text in the game was very enjoyable, only "complaint" is it felt too much like work
Joking aside, really enjoyed the submission.
Thanks for checking it out! One of my additions I’ll be adding after voting is a few minigames and some unique behavior between different daemons. Stuff like spam popups, terminal bugs, and a text based choose-your-own adventure. Hopefully some unique stuff like that will help it stand away from work lol
I had fun, reading the comments I discovered that I could copy past commands, it was driving me crazy, I exorcised the first one but it stucks with $. and I didn't understand if it was done or not.
I loved the terminal idea, not really scary tho
It gets a bit more scary on the later exorcisms (there are 4 in total)
I’d make sure the exorcist command was entered correct (replacing demon name and path, including brackets). That command in particular has some gaps in the error response logic which can sometimes not give feedback
The slack notifications had me dead lol. I can't believe you made a terminal with working apps in this short of a timeframe. I also liked the addition of "spotify" lol. Once I realized you could copy paste, it felt much better. I also tried using mouse click to copy and paste, but instead it was the usual ctrlC+ctrlV. Such an original concept, but I didn't see too much of a connection to the theme. Great entry!
Thanks for checking it out! I grappled on adding a right click menu for awhile, as it is just a button toggle. I just wasn’t a fan of the look of the menu, and allowing it in the terminal. If I had more time, I would have liked building my own context menu tbh.
The theme connection is mainly the idea of haunted computer systems, and the idea of dispelling them similar to how we would viruses. I tried to merge famous viruses or types of viruses with stuff like demons to get that across, plus the Vatican IT idea lol.
This was quite fun, I found myself missing real terminal shortcuts like right click to paste and a full command history with the up arrows. I think having tabs in the browser would have been sick. I got pretty into it however, nice work. The slack notification scared the heck out of me!
I enjoyed playing. It was fun and I like the visuals. I think that the exorcism could be a little more interactive (for example: if you exorcise demon, you need to solve a puzzle or beat a boss) But it was still one of the best things I've played during this jam
totally agree! I’ve been working on an update where the daemons are a bit more customized, requiring additional tasks / minigames to exorcise them. One of them activated an old school text RPG in the terminal lol. Thanks for checking it out!
Good game. I like it.
Although I couldn't figure out how to exorcise a daemon, I had a lot of fun just playing around in the terminal and using the applications. You really captured the horror feel of getting a message on Slack right when you're about to leave work and run into an issue and ask a follow up question and the guy ghosts you harder than the ghosts you're supposed to be exorcising. I loved the Slack notification sounds and the spotify application. Some more hints in the tutorial stage would be appreciated though. Overall I laughed a lot with this one, it made me really happy. Cool idea!
Glad you had fun! Capturing that “Slack terror” was definitely a goal of mine, so I’m happy it came across lol. I’ll definitely think about adding more hints to the tutorial if I revisit this—I wanted to help players get past that first learning curve without taking away too much of the discovery process. Thanks for the feedback!
Looks like we both though about making computer simulators haha. I was a bit lost until I read in your comment here that I was supposed to run "vpn connect sanctum". When I was just running "vpn connect Lucifex", it said that vpn was not a recognized command (I suspect this was a "catch all failures" case).
Cool idea overall! It is kind of funny that you made a job simulation haha
Great minds think alike - thanks for checking it out!
One of the most original concepts I played on this jam. I loved the retro art style, the haunting slack sounds, and the text interface. As already said in the comment section, I found myself trying to use the shortcuts I use at my regular job a few times 😅
Fun fact: I got two ideas from my first solo-brainstorm, one of them was very similar to your haunted coffeeshop idea, but as a pub instead, and I also ended up developing a different idea 😆
Congrats for the great game and implementation!
Thanks for checking it out! Haunted pub would have been rad too, I’ve just really been wanting to make that type of game.
I like the concept but I feel like I'm at work and I need IT. >_<
very cute !!! i likey
Love the concept and it was so immersive that I instinctively tried to use shortcuts I normally use (which sadly didn't work). You don't know how many times I tried to alt tab to try to switch back to the firefox window.
Great to hear! I also noticed that when I got some testers to try it out (shout out to homie leadsharp) - but that was ~2 hours before deadline. Replicating stuff like that is definitely on the list if I go back to this idea, which I might since it has some potential for expansion
The first thing I wanted to do was setup aliases for those commands. The end really got my heart pumping, so well done. I felt like I was on a Fallout computer with those sounds.
thanks for checking it out! One of my early ideas was secret commands that weren’t shown in the intranet, like aliasing and a secret CLI snake game, but as always it was cut near the end lol.
The game looks so good but im too dumb to figure out what i am supposed to do.
Thanks for checking it out! The learning curve can be a little weird, but generally speaking:
From there, you run the npm install command (listed in the Inputs page), test commands listed in the ‘Inputs’ intranet page, cross reference the results with the Daemons intranet page, then we can locate and exorcise the demons with the data we’ve found.
Hope you give it another shot!
As a (fellow?) web developer, this pushed the right buttons, even though - like others pointed out - it felt weirdly like being at work. I liked the originality of the concept, combining the spiritual with the digital, the world felt consistent.
One thing I would add is the support for multiple tabs in the browser, because searching for "daemons" and "inputs" for the first time felt like discovery, but once you are in the middle of investigating and exorcizing the daemons, it's more of a chore to type them all over again to switch between the daemon info and the commands.
I work more on the data side myself, but am constantly dealing with cloud services, so it’s definitely a simplified / fantasy version of work lol.
Multiple tabs is definitely something I want to play with. One of my primary ideas is actually to make the windows resizable and draggable, as it’ll also let me play with spam pop ups during the tense segments. Maybe I should make it so that when you first discover intranet pages, they become added to a bookmark bar at the top of the window. Keeps the “discovery” aspect but makes it easier to return to.
Thanks for checking it out!
Too real for feeling like I was at work, but also really nice touches. Would have been funny if you had an option to install a virus if you mis spelled the npm install command instead of it just not recognizing.
On the not recognizing front it was confusing at first how to begin with the initial VPN connection. Typing VPN connect told me VPN wasn't recognized, but really it was I was missing the server.
Solid entry!
Thanks for checking it out! Errors on incorrect commands is definitely something that I had some trouble implementing. I ended up splitting every string into an array in order to parse the commands, but some stuff like vpn got past me on the error side.
Cool game! I liked the progression and randomness to the puzzles. I wish I could press up to go through previously inputted commands. I think more could have been done on the audio front like ambiance and outside noises like people talking or traffic or the buzzing of electronics. I played to the end and saw the bad ending. I'm a bad typer and Marvis Beacon did not teach me well. Keep up the good work!
Yeah storing an array of previous commands was one of those QoL things that got pushed repeatedly to the side, similar to audio (I built the little spotify thing in the last hour, including music lol). Definitely a good idea on the ambiance, buzz, etc though.
Protip on the typing side - most things can be selected and copy/pasted with CTRL+C and CTRL+V
Also left this on the main page, but I'll say it here too... very cool submission!
Oozing with absolute charm. I really loved the process of getting slack messages and working through solving which one had infected each system. The stakes were very low until they weren't as well.
Super original and creative. Did not disappoint :)
Thanks for checking it out, honestly some of the nicest feedback I’ve received on a jam!
