cool game, everything fits together, like the artstyle and music and effects!
Well done!
Love the UI on this - animated buttons that match the theme of the game. The music fits well, as does the opening dialog. Excellent super hero vibes all around. I'll echo what others have said about the spatial awareness with the laser, but otherwise this was fun and a great entry. Nice work!
Love the art style and animations in this! Like others have pointed out, its a bit confusing where the hero is spatially in the scene when flying up and down. It makes the laser pretty hard to aim, but that does leads to the unintended consequences of laser fried civilians.. so fits the theme nicely! Good work!
Glad you had fun! And yeah, the perspective is a bit weird. It’s a 3D world imperfectly flattened to 2D. I too have had some trouble with the laser…
Great game! The movement and controls all felt so smooth. The artwork is fun and charming as well. I like having to balance the use of the laser vision since it results in a lot more collateral damage XD
I spent a lot of time early on trying to dodge the cars until I realized they couldn't hurt me. I also think the player shadow makes it a little confusing as to where I am spatially in the game.
But outside of those nitpicks, this was a great entry!
Thank you for the feedback! In hindsight, I never really looked over the shadow and it was kind of just a little thing I set up before I even started programming the game just for fun, so it's not very caught up with the rest of the polish. Aside from that, I hope it didn't hinder your experience too much, and I'm glad you had fun with the laser: Trying not to kill innocent civilians lol
Really cool game with excellent UI (especially the toggle button in the settings). Really great graphics and nice sound effects as well. Loved the different types of aliens, and the animations of the dude in the start. Though, I felt the hitboxes for the kicks a little weird and they also did way too less of a damage. Great game aside from that!
Thank you for the feedback! I agree, in hindsight the kick does probably do too little damage 😅
Hopefully in our next release of the game, we'll have much better balancing
And thank you for the comment about the UI, I too really enjoyed how good of a job Mightybjorn did. It really helps polish the game!
As others have said, the UI is excellent. I can really appreciate the work that goes into making UIs good, especially in a such a short time frame. Graphics and the rest of the game is good, there's only a little to nitpick. The shadow of the hero confused me; it made me think I was moving side to side rather than up and down and I'd be punching aliens over the street while my shadow is on the sidewalk. It should be shrinking or growing rather than moving on the y axis.
That’s a good point about the shadow, I just relied on where the character himself is in order to see where to hit.
Thank you for pointing that out- I never thought of the shadow in that way; My vision was that since the sun is behind the player, it is casting a shadow more towards the camera (because the world of the game is 3d, you're just playing it from a 2d angle)—and since the sun is so far away, the shrinking and growing would be negligible—but I never realized that the shadow's position and size could confuse players about Mr. Magnificent's position.
Thank you for the feedback! I never would have caught that on my own lol
really dig the premise. i went in blind so i didnt read anything besides the warning/disclaimer about audio on the itch page so when i used the laser i was simultaneously shocked and laughed. great job!
Glad you had fun with it!
Nicely done! A big fan of the art and animations. It was so satisfying. Also, your resolution seems pretty big and that might be the cause of the lag spike (had to zoom out to 50% cuz i panicked lol).
Thanks! And that's definitely possible. It runs much smoother on the app, so if you're looking for a better experience there that's what I'd do.
The cause of the lagspike is from the renderer loading all of the particles as the game starts (because for some reason OpenGL doesn't have a proper way to preload them 😤)
The resolution I agree might appear bigger on screens that are smaller than 1920x1280
I'll for sure have a look into that for the next game jam, because I've been hearing issues with the resolution from past game jams too
I'd assume if a device is smaller than that resolution, the game would be too large (my monitor is 2560x1440, so for me it seems to fit, and I just chose 1920x1280 because majority of monitors support that)
But thank you for the feedback, perhaps I could implement a way to change resolution for the next game jam 🤔
Really nice beat-em-up! I was immediately struck by the polish of the main menu design! The art was well done, the music and sound effects were really satisfying. I enjoyed the playing with space so that you could fly or be on the ground. It blended very well.
The itch webpage scale was strange for me, and I had to do some finagling to get it to run the game full/screen. Happy to send a screenshot. I couldn't tell if there were going to be multiple levels or if it was endless, but maybe that was covered in the tutorial and I just spaced? Oh! And the tutorial was nicely done. Got a good chuckle out of it.
Great work!
Thank you so much! The screen scale was also a bit weird on my PC, so I feel that. As for the levels question, a full release of the game would have individual levels, but we thought it being endless would be more fun for the jam.
Hey, thank you for the review! I'm glad you found the sounds and art satisfying; we spent a good amount of time really polishing that up lol. As for the scaling- I'm not entirely sure how to fix that right now, and my suggestion would be if it's too game-breaking, download one of the files attached.
Again, thank you for the feedback, I'm really happy you enjoyed playing!
The soundtrack is excellent
Nice UI
That’s fun, kicking enemies
Thanks for the feedback!
This game was very fun hehehe :) I killed WAY more civilians than aliens
I liked the polish on the art and the laser was fun to fire. (the switch in the settings was great as well- nice details) Feedback-wise, I think that the punch could have done a little more damage for how quickly enemies spawned in later on.
But overall, I really enjoyed the submission- GJ!
Definitely true about the kick being a bit weak later on! We were originally intending to add a power-up that would temporarily increase your melee damage, but that didn’t make the cut due to time constraints. Glad you enjoyed!
Really cool game! It's well polished, and art and audio are fantastic (maybe even magnificent!). I love how you tied in the theme of the game jam by deducting points for collateral damage; the player gets to choose how much risk they take by balancing their safety vs. their final score. I also liked the enemies, though I wish the ground ones had a better indicator of when they're about to attack. It's difficult to see the dotted line when I'm up close to them while melee attacking.
Glad you enjoyed it! DTG did a great job on the soundtrack. And the issue of not being able to tell when ground aliens are gonna shoot while you’re up next to them is something I’ve encountered too, it just doesn’t bug me that much because I can usually heal right after. We could add an additional indicator in the future.
Thank you! I'm happy you find the game to be polished! I had no clue how it was going to turn out compared to other games—and honestly—I still don't know how it compares 😅
I've been away from home since a day before the jam ended, so we were kinda rushed towards the end- and now I won't be able to rate peoples' games until the last day 😔 (I'll be sure to check out everyone who commented at least)
I never really noticed an issue with the ground enemies until you pointed it out, so thank you for that lol- I agree that it is hard to tell when they are about to shoot if you are right up to them
Anyways, thank you a lot for the feedback- and once again, I'm really glad you enjoyed how it turned out!
I'm still trying to recover my sleep schedule 😰
great game! i killed so many innocents xD
Haha—being a superhero isn't easy!
I'm in the middle of watching The Boys and so I loved this game's setting. I giggled at the death animation and sound lol
I couldn't tell if I was trying to achieve a negative score or not, but I was killing a ton of civilians and having a blast :)
Generally the goal is to not murder the civilians lol, but it's pretty fun and perfectly possible to play it the opposite way!
Homelander simulator
Nice idea that fits in well with the theme. The laser eyes are fun, but the enemies quickly became many. And in the end I had a negative score xD
I enjoyed your game too! And I agree that the wave scaling is definitely not perfect 😅
