Lots of recommendations for this game, luckily Chrome was kind enough to load it for me on Mac! yay!

So it obviously took a lot of time to pull all these dialogues and maps together, not to mention the inventory system. This was an ambitious game jam entry.

I lucked out on the ending where she comes home... but that was indeed pure luck. I wasn't 't really able to follow the story and some interactions (like filling up a bucket of water or buying a tuna sandwich) still confuse me as to whether they were meaningful or not!

Thanks for playing!

Wonderful atmosphere, amazing detail, overall great game.

Thank you!

Awesome game! Really impressed with this one.

I managed to convince Irene to come back :)

In hindsight, flying balloons is a really good interesting way to interpret the theme. I would've loved to make a game about airships hahaha

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Congrats on getting the "good" ending :)

Very interesting game and very different from others, definitely well thought out and quite polished. I will be back to play again and hopefully can get a better ending... at least hopefully freezing to death with Irene is not the only solution...

Developer

Thanks for playing!

There are multiple endings and some optional content and dialogues. If you enjoyed it, I recommend replaying with different choices :)

Just Fantastic, I’m really impressed, amazing job.

Wow. That was amazing! The amount of well-written dialogues was amazing! Definitely attention to detail. I actually felt like I was talking to the characters!

For some reason, whenever I disabled the shader, I couldn't press buttons, though wasn't a big problem, since I preferred the shader anyway.

The text speed also was a little slow on short comments, such as when a character says, "Oh.".

The music and sound were also really great!

Overall, awesome game!

Developer

Thank you for playing and for the recording! I think I noticed a bug in one of the dialogues on your playthrough :)

Thanks for suggestions. I will check CRT shader button problem and improve the text speed for short lines after the jam is over.

Wow. No hyperbole—perhaps indeed the big "wow" title of this jam that I've played thus far.

I had some reservations from the first interaction in regards to the way the dialogue was written and the lack of music / immersion, but that got quickly dispelled once entering the world and seeing those integrations dramatically improve throughout the rest of the game. The style of art was lovely (reminded me of Papers Please), and the CRT filter + unique aspect ratio made this one feel different.

I couldn't believe the attention to detail of the game. The number of settings and characters, the varied responses to the same dialogue options, the inventory system, even the text speed + fade-out animation time as they related to the narrative events. Just an extremely polished piece.

I'd be hard-pressed to make a helpful criticism, and would have to look for tiny, insignificant things. I suppose story-wise, a little bit more imagination was needed to setting names rather than North/Small/generic adjective] Island, and perhaps the gameplay was too linear (unless I just got really lucky and progressed in the right direction; which looking at some of the comments below, does seem to be the case, so scratch even that). Otherwise, I was very satisfied with the narrative here, and my standards are incredibly high in that department.

Excellent job. Loved this submission.

Thanks for playing and for the detailed review. I appreciate it a lot!

About the names... Those are the placeholders I was planning on replacing later, but in the end decided not to in order to keep them descriptive and not confusing. Not many people will want to remember names of places or write them down (especially in a jam) if they are important to progression. But if I tell you to "go to Small Island" or "Eastern Town" that should be more obvious. But I agree, they are unimaginative and immersion breaking. I will update the names after the jam if I come up with some that sound better, but are also somewhat descriptive.

I see you got the "good" ending. Congrats :) I wonder how you got there?

I'm impressed with how much you managed to make in such a short timeframe. I know how many coding challenges there are when a game like this (cough dialogue system x_x cough). Pretty cool to see a mystery game submission, where most of the game relies on dialogue and thinking about which actions to go for at which moment. At some point I got a bit stuck, I didn't know how to get more money or what to do when it was unsafe to travel.  Also I know it's the type of game, but I'd love to see some visuals (or with something like a quick mouse hover) directly displaying all the information to judge whether it's safe to travel (instead of the clicking each check, which got a bit repetitive at some point but not where it hindered the game too much per se).

Developer

Thanks for playing!

You brought valid points. Some things are not very clear and some players are getting stuck.

Lovely intro with the perfect music. So relaxing. Thank you for this experience. But I have to admit, i wasn't able to finish the flight due to a lack of fuel.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing!

I hope you give it another go. You can get money needed for fuel on the first map ;)

Submitted(+1)

I didn't ask for any reward. My bad. I will play it again. I want to know how you finish this.

I love it, this has some Carmen Sandiego vibes, it's impressive how you came up with such game in a short time schedule.

The CRT shader is a cool effect, it makes me feel playing an old game, but i would like to know if you had that intention or it's something else?

Developer(+1)

I haven't heard of Carmen Sandiego, need to check it out thanks!

CRT is to make the game feel more retro, but mostly to hide my limited art skills :)

Submitted(+1)

Have to pop at this Carmen Sandiego reference; us '90s kids are dancing a jig.

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! The atmosphere is so good, from the slow fadein-title and music, to the retro-style dialog system and map :)

But yea, as others already mentioned, its hard to find ways to earn money/fuel, I feel like its possible to just be unlucky with the path you chose and be stuck. Anyway, time to try it again!

Developer

Yes, you can get stuck, kind of like old Sierra adventure games :)

Hopefully on the 2nd playthrough it's more clear how things work and how to get and manage resources.

Submitted(+1)

This is  a cool game!

I think the atmosphere was built in a cool way, with quite a bit of polish contributing to a good mystery feeling. Also the amount of systems required for this is quite impressive. The balloon and map gave a nice feeling of being an explorer.

Well done, I really liked it!

Very polished game!

So much work went into this one I suspect. I managed to finish the game without visiting many areas. It felt a bit like I painted myself into a corner as I arrived at the east with 1 fuel tank left, but I made it anyway. Maybe I would have been able to earn some money if I went to some other place.

Great music and mood in the game. I liked the map a lot, and fun detail with the GWJ letters on the balloon!

Very impressive entry, well done folks!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yea... I noticed many players were not able to find any money. I might tweak / add some things to help with that after the jam.

Submitted(+1)

i imagine getting rid of all potential deadlocks could be quite a challenge!

Developer(+1)

I did put a few fail-safes in, but if you'd fly back and forth between 2 locations of course you will run out of fuel, can't prevent that :)

Hopefully there's enough resources, clues as to where to go and fail-safes that majority of players will manage to complete it.

Submitted(+1)

really awesome - I found it gripping. I loved the variety in the music especially.

Developer

Thank you!

Interesting visual novel that I've played a bit and I'm saving it to finish later. I like the artistic section; it has personality. Good sound, especially the typewriter typing sound in the texts.

It must have taken a long time to write all the dialogues, questions, and answers. Did you use any specific plugin or tool to write the story, link each scene, and then bring it into the game? Or did you create your own framework for this?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

For dialogues I used Ink scripting language, with Inkgd godot plugin to use it inside engine.

Great artstyle and audio!

Developer

Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Woow I loved the experience, it reminds me a lot of paper please but with a nice story line ! I just finished the game with the ending where you are stuck with Irene in the mountain,  I will look for other endings right now !

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing!

There is a lot of branching and some easter eggs. If you enjoyed it and are planning to play again, try making different choices ;)

Also, would you believe if I told you that I played `Papers, Please` right before the jam started? Coincidence..? ;)

Submitted(+1)

Good polish and great artstyle, love the crt filter!

Developer

Thanks!

Really cool entry, really charming. I loved the audio especially.

I think it might have been nice if there were some more hints or pointers considering its a game jam, because i did feel sort of lost at some point. Maybe i just picked the wrong flight destinations and got unlucky. That said, i think this wouldn't be as big of a problem in a non-jam situation as i could spend more time with it.

I also like that you can toggle the shader. I think it adds to the feel but its nice having the option, same with the skippable intro.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

I tried adding clues along the way, but apparently there weren't enough :) Unfortunately I ran out of playtesters to see where the pain points were. Could you share where you got stuck and which path you took?

Thanks!
