This game was so stylish! I love how you manage to invoke some sort of emotion through the opening cut scene with the close up of the fish. Some paths were tricky to work out if clear or not...like grass but overall great game!

This is a great game that can also work well on mobile if supported, but here is my feedback:

It's unclear whether the artwork style, particularly the grass, is accessible or not.

The white color scheme also makes it difficult to recognize.

The fish art style could be changed to match the ink style, similar to paper mario.

But, overall, it's a nice game, and I like how the fish moves smoothly with gamepad support.

Great game! Atmosphere is cool and quirky, and the sound design is nice. It reminds me of those old wiiware games, so there's a bit of a nostalgia factor as well. My only complaint is that that last field of kelp that you have to go through is very confusing and I got stuck at that point many times because it seemed like there was no way through.

I had a ton of fun playing this and the way the 2D art blended together with 3D was really interesting.

Oh, thanks for the comment. 😊

This was awesome. Really impressive all around, the cutscene at the beginning was great, the color palette and style was great, and it made me keep wanting to try over and over again.

The one and only criticism I have echoes what others have said, where it's a bit difficult to know where you're going to move/the shadows can be deceptive (primarily for the seaweed).

It's amazing that you chose to do the "sounds made with your mouth" thing!! Great game

Developer

The secret I used for making the sounds sound right, is mixing

Yeah, even if the wildcard is "sounds made from your mouth", nothing said that I couldn't overlay multiple mouth sounds to create new, and interesting sounds!

I loved this game. The only complaint I have is that the shadow markers on the seaweed obstacles were somewhat confusing. Overall, great game. Love the art, particles, gameplay, everything. Amazing!

Developer

Duly noted for the shadows!

Thanks for the comment!

Man, this game looks amazing. Just amazing. I like black/white/red color pallet so much. It reminds me my favourite mobile game Break Sword. Visually I would rate your game as 10/10 even beyond the game jam. Great work.

In gameplay sense there is a bit of a challenge to move through the grass bcs it has collider and it's not clear how to move through. I got stuck at the very and of the game.

And thank you so much for sharing your code. I'll definitely take a look and explore it.

Developer

I do not know about Break Sword, leave me a link and I'll check it out!

Thanks for the sweet comment, it makes my day.

Feel free to message me if you've got any questions about my code!

I really enjoyed the minimal colour art style, and the cutscenes as well! I did find it difficult to control everything with my left hand (I'm not much of a WASD gamer and didn't have a controller available).

I didn't quite understand the seaweed obstacles, sometimes I got stuck, and sometimes I made it through.

Overall very nice game, especially visually, so nice. :)

Developer

Your comment on accessibility is spot on.

It was the thing that got axed due to time constraints that I'm sad for.  If I had like 3 more hours, I could have done much more.

But playing other games, maybe the arrow keys + z, x, and c keys would have helped (or maybe as an alternative scheme).

The seaweed were one-way gates, with the shadows as a hint for the direction, but I recognize that it was not clear at all.

Thanks for the comment. :)

The art style is really great, it reminds me of Return of the Obra Dinn. I especially loved the bubble and the feeling of the dash. The hitboxes of the seaweeds are sometimes difficult to understand, but overall it was nice to play !

Developer(+1)

Whoa, thanks for the comparison to Return of the Obra Dinn, I'm blushing right now.

I liked that monochrome world with the colored fish and net. Although some obstacles were not always clear for me.  Nice game!

Developer

Thanks! At the begining of development, I tried for a more realistic look and I saw how much time I was sinking on it. So, I decided to do the exact reverse. 😅

I love the bass! The zoom in on the fish is hilarious. The splash screen was a nice treat and the chase was intense. Barely made it on my first try despite the issues others have already brought up. Overall really cool game!

Developer

Congrats to be able to make it to the end! That's not simple.

Thanks for the comment on the splash screen! I put maybe way too much time on it, but I think it was worth it.

I really liked the art, especially the limited color palette. I also liked the bubbles when you swim. It's a pretty game! How'd you do the mini cutscene after the tutorial, when you showed the net and zoomed into the fish's face? That was pretty cool.

There were times where I didn't know how to move forward, so it would be nice if it were a little more obvious.

The music is nice and catchy and gives me that suspense feeling, too.

Nice work!

Hi! Thanks for the comments.

My source code is available, if you want to peek. I used Godot 3.5 beta1.

To facilitate the cutscene integration, as I used when I showed the net and zoomed into the fish's face, I used multiple animation players. Then, when I trigger my cutscene_net_approaching cutscene, it plays first net_approaching animation for the animation player in the cutscene net node. net_approaching sets the current camera, and the animation for it. Then, reaction_shot animation for the animation player of the cutscene's fish node sets the current camera on it's turn, etc. So, setup your camera locally for each take, then use animation players to switch cameras.

At the end of cutscene_net_approaching, I manually call cutscene_net_approaching_skip for my main animation player (my little hack) which resets the camera and the settings to gameplay ones. This is handy because if somebody hits Escape during the cutscene, it plays directly cutscene_net_approaching_skip, which resets everything for gameplay, cancelling the cutscene.

I hope this helps!

The atmosphere is pretty good here. The limited color palette and the sound design / music both work really well here, in my opinion.

One element I especially like is the dash. It isn't instantaneous and exciting, but deliberate and almost desperate. It doesn't have the normal feeling of dashes in video games, where you can dash over and over to speed around a room, and I think that's pretty cool. It really contributes to the overall atmosphere, as well.

I couldn't quite figure out how to get through the plants in the middle of the level. From what I can tell getting around them requires going up to the top of the screen, but then I'm not sure where I should go horizontally. The other obstacles work pretty well though. I especially like the moving blocks, as it provides an interesting challenge to figure out the best way to navigate around them and when to use dashes.

I put shadows at the foot where walls can be traversed, so if you follow the shadows, you're good. But I agree that it's not the clearest thing around.

Otherwise, if it's the "forest" of algae, try the extremities, left or right. Or try see at the base, where there's no algae.

The game does well at creating an atmosphere of tension for the fish. A not-often used take on the “fishing” theme, where you’re the fish trying to avoid getting caught :) It was a bit difficult to identify the obstacles in some places, and where you could swim through. Nice game overall!

Developer

I just realised that I liked the comment, but that may be anybody for the one commenting.

Yeah, haha, the number of comments on my (not clear at all) one-way gate is something that I'll note for future submissions.

Thanks!
