Amazing game. It was hard firstly to understand how to play, but after I really enjoyed it. Merging different colors and having even radial palettes

I cant get the controls to work.  I won't give up though... this one looks too good to miss :)

Developer

Do you mean controllers or no input is detected at all?

Submitted

No input at all.  I'm going to try with a controller today :)

Developer

That is very strange. Maybe try a different browser or download the game. I simply used godot’s input methods and it works for others so I see no reason why it should not work for you.

Developer

Did you manage to get it working?

Submitted(+1)

Yes it works brilliantly!  I don't know what was wrong before.  It must have been my end.  Great game :)  Takes a while to get good at it but its very very rewarding :)  Excellent! :)

very cool zen game with fitting sound and pretty artwork. controls and movement is pretty solid, the feel of flying was nailed down very well :-)

Developer

Thanks :) Flying was originally very different. I wanted to make the player move with individual big wingflaps, but it felt terrible to play no matter what I did with it. So I replaced that with this continous but floaty controller, which is definitely much nicer.

Very pretty and relaxing game, cool mechanics too!

Though, I do have to say that my controller didn't work at all in this game (and it does work in other godot games with controller suppoert).

Developer(+1)

That is strange, most situatuons it worked. I noticed that for me on linux it did not work with chromium. Local builds and firefox worked flawlessly. I did not have time to investigate, I brushed it off as a browser quirk.

I use Windows with Chrome. All in all, doesn't matter too much, just thought you might wanna know.

Climbing between branches was a very cool mechanic!

This is a brilliant and simple idea, you created an amazing ambiance with a lot of love put into it. The music and nature sounds are such a good choice.

What this game needs is just more. More variety, more detail, more of the art, more of the same vibe, more environments, more complexity, more than what is achievable in a jam. I think a lot of people is going to appreciate the tone and feelings you've created here, and you should just give them more to do and see so they can stay for longer.

Another thing that would be an important addition is an interactive tutorial. You don't even need to use words, you can show the controls and actions gradually to the player to set the mood and tempo of the game. Show two butterflies mating and the resulting color in some way, show the caterpillar eating and hanging from a branch, stuff like that. Just make the first tutorial experience a player gets in your game have the same vibe the rest of your game has, and explaining it visually instead of literally will make it feel even more organic and relaxing.

Great work, hope to be seeing more from you!

Impressive game for a 9 days jam! I liked how you played around with movement, and made something truly unique. I hope you win, because this is something else!

Developer

I’m thrilled you like it so much. I love working with interesting movement mechanics. My favourite games all have some unique movement and I also always gravitate to ideas that involve it when thinking about what type of game to make. If you want to look at the movement code its on github, but its not a very common approach, it might be a bit hard to understand.

The art and music is great! I liked how the caterpillar movement made it a unique gameplay experience.

Developer

Thank you, I’m glad you liked it! It was a bit tricky to get working, lots of raycasts and the collision polygon of the tree had to be rounded on every corner for the algorithm to work, but on this specially designed environment it worked quite well. And robustly to be honest, have not heard any complaints about it anywhere.

Colourful and chill, I like it :) I think tutorial with picture and text was a bit overwhelming, maybe small prompts about what to do next for a single cycle can be an effective tutorial.

Developer

I totally agree. I didnt have time to add those things, they can take a surprisingly long time and I rather spent that polishing things a bit. That is part of the reason I made a video as well, so maybe you dont miss out on a feature or something just because you didnt read the tutorial. I tried to show everything in it so if you like it you would know to look for it in the game. But definitely, the proper way would be to show everything in game step-by-step especially since the controls are not conventional.

I’m glad you liked it. :)

Very satisfying gameplay. Makes you want to keep reaching the next stage.

So serene! I love how relaxing the game feels. The art and music go so well together and with the gameplay.  Go Team Caterpillar!!

Such a pretty game! I love the sumi-like brush strokes that makes up the branches and the absolutely staggering amount of detail in the background. The game is also fun and relaxing. I realy loved hanging out in the tree with my butterfly friends. Very nice entry!

Really liked the sound and graphics, was a bit confused at the start but once I figured it out it was pretty fun.

Developer(+1)

Everyone I gave this game to try had a rough time at the start. Maybe because the controls are very different from other games. That’s why I added a tutorial with pictures, maybe it helps some people. Also why I made the video to show you what the characters can do. But overall I think the controls turned out quite well, once you learn it its quite easy to control the characters. I’m glad you enjoyed it :)

Like a storybook. Love that you can zoom in and out of the picture and can play both as a caterpillar and butterfly.

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I’m glad you like it. I felt like the caterpillar was fun to see close up, while the butterfly felt better when I zoomed out the camera. So I thought I should add this feature and let the player decide. Maybe I could have made the camera zoom in and out by default while still giving back control to the player.

Nice game! liked it a lot. Would be nice with some really soft relaxed music, or nature sounds.
