I found the game enjoyable and I like the idea. Ctrl+R didn't work to restart the level because I played it in the browser so that was a bit frustrating. I wish there was something to give you a bit of forward momentum, like the penguin flapping its wings, just so I wouldn't get stuck so often and so the player would have some more control, but maybe that's my bad.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed!

I added ctrl+r during pre-prep for the jam, it was intended for development purposes but turned out to be useful. I think it refreshing is a firefox-only issue.

When you go into the water and emerge, you get a little speed boost. Also don't forget you can also lift the terrain behind you, this allows for continuous movement.

Thanks for playing!

The game is fun, the music is amazing, and as you said in the description of the game, there is an adorable penguin!

Developer

Thank you so much, glad you liked it!

physics game for the w!
also huge Tiny Wings vibe

Developer

Thanks! I'm not familiar with tiny wings, but part of the inspiration was this game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKJNtgJlOdk

Actually now that I look at it someone mentioned tiny wings in the comments of that video :D

Fun concept and Physics mechanics are always fun!!! NIce music and everything!

Developer

Thanks! Surprisingly the physics behave quite well with how I modify the terrain.

Really cool! Get it, cool? I love how much you can customize the ground. I was able to get unstuck easily, and the music is soothing.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I made the music and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

A very unique game, if it had more mechanics it would be perfect to make people play all day! I really got hooked on the game. Great Job!

Developer

Yes, sadly we were all out of time. Thanks for playing!

Loved this entry!
Gave me great nostalgia for Tux Racer. It is super cute and feels quite polished with the music and the VFX when raising/lowering the floor.
The idea of taking on the role of the terrain is one of the more creative takes on the theme I've seen and works really well.
Good luck with the votes =D

Developer

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the game!

Amazing game! There were a lot of games in this jam where you control the level instead of the player but this one has an interesting twist where you terraform the terrain instead which works really well! The water looks amazing and the music sounds wonderful! The gameplay gets boring real quick and after like 3 levels the game gave me a black screen. Overall fun and charming game. Good luck on your future project's!

Developer

Thanks! Daivy came up with the idea and I think it turned out really nicely! Glad you enjoyed the music, I had to rush it right at the end of the jam and we didn't have enough time to polish everything up. The game could use some more variety for sure.

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed!

Very simple controlls and easy to understand. It is so satisfactory when penguin slides so fast in the ice! Congrats on the game

Developer

Thank you, good to hear that it's easy to grasp. Happy you enjoyed!

I really like this game! I was so fast that I made the game buggy :,) it's a kind of victory

Excellent work

Developer

Haha, yeah it was tricky to balance the physics, sometimes it still behaves weirdly.

Thanks for playing!

Really smooth and enjoyable!

Developer

Thank you, glad you enjoyed!

I'm shocked at how smooth the terraforming is. The core gameplay loop is a little simple but still gets the job done. Great work!

Developer

Yeah unfortunately we didn't have time left for more levels and items. We had the idea of having to restart the level if you didn't collect all the fish but the deadline was already there 😅

Submitted(+1)

This is such a neat effect! great job

Developer(+1)

Thanks! It was a bit tricky, but I love how it turned out

Submitted(+1)

What a great idea! And also excellent execution :) Had a lot of fun figuring out how to catch the most fish. Awesome job!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the game!

This is really fun! Thanks for posting the github, I'm really interested to see how you made pushing and pulling the terrain so smooth

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I use this helpful damping function to help me make it smooth: https://github.com/icy-lava/frost-surf/blob/3d10d9677ac2cf2afc40a0f2b0538b637a0e...

There's also an article on it https://www.rorydriscoll.com/2016/03/07/frame-rate-independent-damping-using-ler...

Other than that, it's just a bunch of tweaking to make it look and behave nicely.

Thanks for playing :)

wow! very unique concept. love the idea of contolling the ice level instead of him! just a small detail but at first i was confused how to controll between adding and removing ice, but then i got it, it moves towards the cursor position. btw Nice to see the new Godot version to run well. but how did you do that displacement thing with the ice?

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing! You played this really soon and we haven't filled out the page completely yet, will add some instructions to it at some point :)

The way I displace is that I have a bunch of points which gradually move vertically to the mouse when it's held. I have a polygon collider for the terrain, but for optimization reasons, only part of the points get set on the polygon (this happens dynamically throughout the game).

I don't know if I'm clear, but either way you can just see how I did it - https://github.com/icy-lava/frost-surf/blob/main/object/terrain.gd

Thanks for playing!
