i played multiple pokemon snap and yours probably one of the hardest XD great job btw

Developer

thank youuu :) and nice! it's definitely not a take i've seen much in this jam--i did find "no photos, please!" through the search bar after your comment. are there others i'm missing?

Fun little game. Could see this going somewhere (but where?) if you had more time to work on it, adding stuff like camouflage suits for the bird,  speed-ups, bigger branches, infrared cameras that can see through trees, etc. Maybe even have other birds competing with you and stealing your stuff?

Definitely worth thinking about (i think ;)

Developer

thank you, and i definitely will be thinking about it :) i think i wanna lean into stealth more than speed-up sort of things, and i have a sort of nebulous narrative taking form in my head. but it's all hypothetical til i actually make it, so i won't say too much

Fun little Pico-8 Game.  Really cool concept and good execution. Great Job.

Developer

thanks so much for playing! glad to hear you liked it :)

I really like the art and the music! I like how getting photographed isn't the end of the world, it just diminishes your... bragging rights. Really fun game!

Developer

thanks!! i knew it was gonna be difficult to avoid them, so i wanted to make it more of a score thing than a failstate. i think i want to keep it as a score thing, but also make it more possible to avoid them altogether in the hypothetical future version. like, each level is scored and that score is saved? anyway that's probably enough rambling, haha. thanks again for playing and commenting! glad you liked it :)

Great game! Maybe a camera could make me drop a stick if I got photographed? I had a lot of fun

Developer

ooh, that's an interesting idea... i think it would be frustrating in this version with how many cameras there are, but i'll try that out while i'm working on it in the (hopefully near) future. thanks for playing and commenting! glad you liked it :)

What a cool take on the gamejam theme! Lovee the cute artstyle, suuper well done!

Developer

thank you, thank you! glad you liked it. i've definitely been feeling better about my pixel art, so i appreciate your comment there :) here's to continued improvement!!

pico-8 games are always so cute and charming :) very vibrant colors and banger music here. and i liked the idea of reversed perspective pokemon snap which makes you consider how your innocent picture-taking could actually be uncomfortable and intrusive for the animals

Developer(+1)

thank you! i wasn’t sure if i was gonna jam or not, but when i had this idea i knew i needed to try *something*

Submitted(+1)

Very cool, maybe you could have some more incentive to not get snapped by the cameras.

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing and commenting! i'm definitely wanting to flesh this out more :D

Submitted(+1)

Super cute game!!!! I wish there could have been more ways to avoid the cameras (especially since the movement speed is pretty slow and rectangles will sometimes rotate from somewhere outside the screen and come out of nowhere) because I really enjoy the stealth element.

The music is honestly really well done and the pico 8 graphics are well utilised. Love this entry!

Developer(+1)

thank you, thank you! :D glad you liked it. i definitely wanna plumb the depths of these mechanics a little more--feel like i can make something more interesting and less random. but we shall see!

Submitted(+1)

Really unique concept with and very well executed! I would love to see more levels with more complexity!

Developer

thanks for playing! the timeline made it easy to just randomize everything and call it a high score chaser, but i've been thinking about what some more carefully-crafted levels might look like :)

Submitted(+1)

Great job for someone who had plans on both Friday and Saturday night during the jam ! Your rectangle rotate perfectly around a point ;). I liked the music, the design and especially the game-boy like launch ! The Pokemon snap reverse is a cool concept, and you've done it perfectly!

Developer(+1)

i spent waaaay too much time on that rectangle, lol. between rotating it and detecting when the player is inside of it, i got quite the refresher on my later math classes!

thanks for playing and commenting! glad you enjoyed it :D

Great idea, but hiding from all the cameras is pretty tricky. Would be nice to have a bit more little safe zones, like boxes/obstacles to hide behind.
Music is really nice tho, and overall, it's a neat entry, hope to see this as a full game someday!

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing! i have enough distance now that i'm starting to think of how to move forward, and i'm definitely leaning towards more ways to hide from the cameras. brainstorming time... :)

Submitted(+1)

Amazing concept, always nice to see pico-8. Hope to see a full version out some time, the soundtrack was great too.

Developer

thank you!! i definitely wanna continue work on this at some point, but i'm taking a break for the time being. i'm hoping to make the song flow a little better--i like both parts of it, but i think the transition could use a little work

Submitted(+1)

SUPER CREATIVE CONCEPT!! It's fun and stressful at the same time, while feeling super rewarding when you make it to the nest. I finished with 10 photos. (:

Developer(+1)

thank you for playing! i was definitely going for that stressful feeling, so i'm glad to hear it's coming across. i've only gotten my score down to 14 so far!

heyooo, fellow pico 8 dev! this is a blast to play! really fast-paced and addicting. i like how it just throws you in, then teaches you the rules after you die--it set the tone very well! it took me a bit to realize that i was laying down the dots that the snake would eat, but it's easy enough to figure out through play that i liked discovering it without a tutorial.

the only issue i've run into so far is with the high scores--the endcard will tell me one score, but then the high score table will have a slightly lower number for some reason. my scores have been 1 recorded as 0 (first round lol), 80 recorded as 76, and 186 recorded as 171.

i just played three rounds real quick, but i'll be back to this one for sure! it has exactly the kind of quick, bite-sized gameplay that i love. and the music is real pretty! congrats on the jam, and wonderful outcome!

Developer

uhh. did you mean to copy-paste my comment from another game onto my own game? none of this even has anything to do with my game other than being in pico 8. not sure if you're just using a bot to post comments or what, but this is odd.

I imagine the cameras as a gaggle of influencers descending for the perfect cottage-core chicken pics.  Cute game. If you ever come back to this, I'd love a version with stealth mechanics: coops to hide behind, opportunities to blend in with the farmhouse chickens, that sort of thing.

Developer(+1)

love that image, haha! they were supposed to be more drone-like but i'm not a great pixel artist yet. i'd absolutely love to do more stealthy stuff! i wanted to put something like that in, but ended up spending too much time on the cameras and their frames. maybe it's for the better, because you all are coming up with way better ideas for it than me! thanks for playing and commenting :)

Submitted(+2)

You absolutely nailed the feeling you were going for, being a little bird just terrified of this swarm of photography influencers. Managed to get through with 13 snaps; was on a good run but the last journey I got cornered.

Love the art style, and the decision to represent the people as cameras. The big grey rectangles felt monstrous to my tiny bird friend.

I would love to see a little bit of additional interaction; you've nailed the movement speed for the feel you're going for, but could maybe 'flee' back to the nest, costing me my progress but saving me getting snapped. Or maybe a stand-still nestle into the ground (like hiding in the grass).

Developer

ooh, i like your ideas! originally i thought about having some sort of cover you could hide behind, but ended up scrapping it to focus on other things. definitely want to work on more ways to avoid the cameras, so thanks for the inspiration!

Submitted(+1)

The music and art were both great! I liked how slow your character moved, it made it much more interesting. The UI was very helpful. Although it was simple, I enjoyed it a lot, even if I wasn't that great. I got through getting photographed by the disgusting evil vile horrific cameras 10 times.

Developer

thanks for playing! i wish i could have made the music flow a little better, but i saved it for last so i could get everything else working. and yea, originally the birb moved faster but this seemed more fun to me :)

your score is better than mine! i didn't have much time to try once everything was in place, but my best so far is 17. i'll have to try it once i'm better rested to see if i can beat ya c:<

Submitted(+1)

This is a really interesting concept of avoiding cameras, and im impressed you made this in Pico8. Well done :)

Developer

thank you! i wasn't sure if i was gonna do the jam, but i knew i had to try something once the idea came to me. pico-8 is the only engine i'm at all familiar with, but hopefully next time i can use something less... minimalistic. the amount of time i wasted on math for the rectangles really put me behind, haha
