Managed to set up my Vive to give this a go and am sure glad I did! Really brilliant art style, intuitive controls (very important for VR) and some charming enemies and SFX!

I will echo the comment regarding the unclear HP, plus it took me some time working out whether to actually punch or flick my pointer at the nasties. Oh, also when I came to a section with a barrier near a lake of lake I went straight through the barrier and did a nice tour of the outside of the map :P

Really cool to see such a well featured VR game in this jam, I'm so impressed with how much got in and to such a standard. Very good stuff! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! Those barriers were my miss, I was hoping no one would notice :D

I liked the aesthetic a lot! The solidly built, brightly coloured enemies work really well in VR, as do the sharp, low poly surroundings.

This is probably personal preference, but I didn't like that movement was head-relative. Since this is a dungeon crawler (and possibly also because I was playing seated) I had a clear idea in my mind of which direction my character was pointing within a cell, so it was always an awkward surprise when pushing forward moved me in a different direction. I know there are other people who absolutely demand head-relative movement, though, so I guess you can't please everybody!

Overall a pleasant little VR experience; hope you had fun making it!

Developer

Thanks for the great feedback! Totally agree on the movement point, I think it's something we'd like to make optional in a future version.

Other than the dirty looks I got from my kid when I requisitioned the Oculus headset, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Combat could probably have been a bit more fluid—it's a bit irksome in VR when you make a physical action and nothing happens—but I love the ambience, the art style, and the grid-based movement suited VR very nicely. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for taking the risk with your parent-child relationship to try it! Glad you liked it!
Fixing and improving the combat is definitely at the top of our list to do post-jam.

This was really great! I got it working on my Oculus Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop. I sometimes get motion sick with VR games that let you free move and there was none of that here! Very comfortable.

Some minor point which I'm not sure if they are due to your game or to Virtual Desktop or the Quest:

* I could not see any UI and never had any idea how much life I had -- Nevermind, I see now that it's the circle on my arm. If that was part of the tutorial, it would me great :)

* The combat is very easy. I was just about one-shotting everything, but the dragon in the end which took forever, and eventually killed me. It would have been nice to respawn at the start of the dragon level

* I couldn't tell what the square disks were, coins maybe?

Regardless, this was extremely impressive. The art is awesome and I'd love to see a full game out of this.

Developer

Thanks steamknight! We really appreciate you taking the time to try it!
Glad you felt comfortable, we tried to strike a balance between keeping the traditional dungeon crawler movement without causing motion sickness. I also sometimes get motion sick so I know what you mean!

You are right about the health ui, we should have made it part of the tutorial and yes the game definitely needs to be balanced better!

The silver discs are the lowest level of health potions.

Thanks for trying it and your feedback! With all the positive comments we've received, we are definitely considering making a full game out of it!

Definitely my favorite of all the entries. I must confess that I am biased towards VR since I work with developing for VR.

Great atmosphere and environments and really fun to smack the monsters. Intuitive controls, although I would like some indicator for my health (maybe I missed something?). I would also like to have an option to choose different types of locomotion. i.e teleport or instant movement between grid squares. The smooth movement may cause nausea for some people.

VR is actually a perfect fit for grid based dungeon crawlers. Now I'm inspired to make one :D

Developer

Thanks for your great review zooperdan!
There is actually a health indicator as a circle on the left arm but I think we need to let people know about it better!

Different comfort options sadly didn't make the cut in time, we do have instant movement but it didn't get hooked up to the UI!

Developer(+1)

You know, come to think of it, we could have literally written the word "health" next to the circle. It never even occurred to me in the heat of the jam! :D

HostSubmitted(+1)

Ah, I saw the circle but didn't catch what it was for :)

Ah its too bad there's no non-vr mode. I am unable to play it currently.

Developer

Yes sorry about that, we had hoped to have a non-vr mode and currently you can move actually with the wasd or arrow keys and turn with q + e / delete + page down but sadly we didn't have time to finish it off
