The concept is really cool, makes me imagine a more bullet-helly version of Everhood ^^ The level is fairly short, but shows a lot of promise. The first half captures the song's eastern, blazing sun kind of feel really well. Beat counter mode no-hit first, then one hit mode.
The gameplay and its visuals are solid and promising, however the one aspect I think really needs work is presentation. I've seen the game's banner quite a few times over the jam's rating period, but it didn't feel appealing or clickworthy. The game page doesn't have any gameplay screenshots. The logo seems hard to read and doesn't catch a lot of attention imo, nor gives off a feel of the game too well. Ultimately, I'm glad I clicked, downloaded and tried the game, but some other souls might pass it by, even if the gameplay would be up their alley. Presentation is important ^^ Because sadly, people won't be able to enjoy a game if they never click on it :c
Only a couple nitpicks about the game itself:
- The tutorial being broken, which I see quite a few comments mentioned already. Probably a good idea to change the game page's description about it until it's fixed
- The, err, 3x3 grid part starts quite abruptly, giving little time to figure out what's happening. Might be worthwhile to give some kind of visual warning the first time it's going to start, or give a little more time to react
- While moving on the 3x3, trying to rapidly press the arrow keys may prevent the player from moving properly. I imagine this could be really nasty later on if there are any 3x3 grid patterns that require speed to evade
Overall - great concept, I think presentation is the only glaring issue, everything else is solid ^^ glad I gave the game a go, would love to see some post-jam updates!
Thank you so much ^^ I had 1 minute left when I finished the game so I had little to no time to improve presentation, but as I will continue developing this game, I'll take your advice and make a proper banner and game page. Didn't want to change it during the vote phase because it may show there was changes and I want to avoid them thinking I'm trying to cheat or something hahaha
Honestly, I think you know how to dodge in the Limited mode if you read the only part readable of the tutorial XD However I know it's not "fun" to wait in the tutorial on the parts that there are no text, that'l be solved as fast as I can when the jam ends later today (and whenever Zelda TotK gives me a break XD)
Oh boi, wasn't expecting one of those ngl. Really fun time, really love the songs, as expected from a rythm-ish game they're pretty good, I assume there's only one real level tho, but that's fine. Visuals are also pretty nice, love the squishness of the player, and also really like the gameplay transition on the middle. The tutorial was broken as I noticed you're already aware, so it was actually quite a hype surprise when it happened, specially because it kicks in right on the drop so it feels awesome.
It's still pretty simple tho, so I really don't have much else to say about it unfortunatelly, Just gonna make a little note here that I'm almost sure that one-life mode is a little impossible, as shown on this little scheme I made
Altought I'm mostly certain I could squeeze in between the middle and right bullet rows while they're above only half-a-square each, but I feel like the timing for that would need to pixel-perfect
Actually now that I look more closely, there indeed is a window I could use to dodge the right row, but man it's so tight that in-game it barely feels like it exists.
Or maybe there isn't, idk I might be seeing things :P
Thank you for the comment ^^ I tried my best to mix rythm and bullethell as it was something I really wanted to do for a while and never started. The proper song is Scarab yeah, but it's not finished, sinchronizing the bullets to the music is really difficult and more time consuming than I expected, but I'm glad you liked it.
As you say, the window on that frame is too small, however if you hit the key exactly when the beat does, you don't get hit. I considered it as a minor issue to solve, because it was either that or too much room, but I have to tweak that, thank you for pointing that out ^^
I managed to dodge it myself with no damage on second try. It didn't really feel like such a difficult spot at first, but when I became aware of it, it really felt tighter and dodging it the next time seemed a bit more difficult. So perhaps not thinking about a difficult spot being difficult is the key, haha :P
This game is amazing. I love how the bullets matched with the song. It was really well put together I thought. The controls are awesome and the visuals are amazing. I didn't realise at first but I love the way the health is displayed via the background numbers, such a cool idea. The only problem I had was when the song changed to the second part. I loved the shift and the dodge mechanic where you had to move on that grid was great, although I wasn't given enough time to understand what was happening before the bullets came at me, so it was a little punishing. Other than that, amazing game :)
The tutorial seems broken though.. But it's a game jam so that can't be helped.
yeah it was supposed to be explained in the tutorial, but again, it's broken. I've said it in a previous comment but you only miss the controls hahaha if you play the tutorial you can read the limited mechanic explanation but its not in the moment it should. Also you can play the tutorial to understand it better even without text, and enjoy the music too hehe
Thank you for the comment and for playing ^^ I'm glad you enjoyed it
Really cool experience. The bullets feel nicely matched with the song. The visuals look aestheticallypleasing. The music was nice, the hit SFX wasn't my favorite but it still served its purpose well. The dash felt awesome with the trail behind it. I appreciate the multiple game modes. The gameplay felt challenging but not to difficult, I liked it.
Really cool submission.
Thank you a lot ^^ I never loved the hit SFX neither haha maybe I'll change it in a future
I took 3 hits (after a few retries).
The music is pretty good and I love the way it stops when you die. The game is fun and dynamic, it feels very good, the patterns are cool and the speed of the game is appropriate, you really want it to be fast and eventually get super fast and it does exactly that. The fact it switches halfway between two different things (continuous and grid) makes it even more dynamic.
Very cool game, looking for additional songs.
Thank you ^^ you'll have more songs in a future 100%, you can follow if you want to see any updates I'll make after the jam
I love it ! gameplay is so satisfying! Good job!
Thank you very much ^^
Really nice an polished experience. the music was great and the bullet patterns were fun and everything was synced together really nicely. Definitely would be great to be longer as it’s a lot of fun.
Thank you ^^
Wow, really excellent game, I just wish there was more of it! I love rhythm based gameplay, so I was really happy to see the care with which you increased the challenge as the song reached its crescendo. I especially loved the grid based movement section, as it allowed my button presses to sync to the beat in a really satisfying way. And visually, this was really sleek and polished. The color choices were really nice, and the inclusion of the hit counter in the background made it really stand out. I did run into one issue with the tutorial going into a buggy loop and starting to spit out nonsense text. But other than that, this was an incredible experience. Great work!
I know about the tutorial bug I'm sorry. I'd make way more and more songs in the future hehe so I hope you keep enjoying it. And yeah, the bpm increases and so does the spawner shot speed, because they're correlated. And the point of the Limited mode was to sync the inputs with the song, not just the spawners hehe. Ty for your comment and I'm happy you enjoyed it^^
I would absolutely love to play more of this! I finally beat it in the 5 hit version on my 3rd try.
I only had one issue, and it's that the tutorial didn't load quite right the first time I tried it and it kept resetting after displaying the first dialogue line. Not sure what I did to make it happen or how to recreate it, though haha.
Fun game!
Yeah the first lines with the controls are kinda bugged, idk why because the unity editor shows them perfectly, but I posted a coment too with the controls, and also the important thing to read is how the Limited mechanic works. Thank you for your comment ^^
GOD DANM THAT WAS AWESOME. Totally wasn't expecting to see a rhytm game, especially of such quality. And the moment when your movement changes to grid-based is just something. Only wish the game was longer ,_,
I wished that too, but I had to spend like 4 days programming al the bullet hell engine, and like 3 days on my full time job XD However I enjoyed so much with this and turned out so good that I will continue the scarab song (with the big scarab being the boss) and I'll add more songs in the future. Follow me if you wanna see that ^^ and thank you for your coment
Absolutely love the visuals and audio. Really enjoyed the bug in the tutorial as I spent a few minutes trying to figure out if it was intentional because it's called Rythem Trapped, sadly not. But the main mode I really enjoyed great song and I loved the different patterns because they fit so well with the song. I am curious how you synced the spawners with the song. Did you place and time them all or did you somehow set up events to happen at different part of the song?
I make the song bpm the timer, so whenever it reaches the beat I wanted, they shot, or stopped shooting for the continuous ones. The tutorial was sadly a bug hahaha however I'll solve it as soon as the jam ends. Thank you for your rating and comment ^^
Love the rythm aspect, and also the fact that it isn't a shooting game, it's bullet hell but you're on the recieving end haha!
Yeah didn't want to do a shooting game, I thought everyone else would do that, wanted to be original hehe
So, there's a bug in the tutorial that messes up the text when compiled, but not in editor. For anyone playing it, you may see random letters shuffled, but basically they explain the controls: Arrows or wasd to move, space to dash, escape to pause. It also explains the counter in the background is the amount of hits taken or lifes remaining. That's all, the rest can be read properly.
