Awesome story and graphics.  I was pulled in with the characters.  Sound could use a bit of finessing but I appreciate the creativity from both Humans.

Developer

Surprised no one else mentioned this! Getting the levels just right with the voice overs was really hard.

Kudos to Ms. Human and Human Jr. for their amazing voice acting performances. Especially Chonker was cute, funny and terrifying all at the same time. The writing was hilarious, too. Really enjoyed it.

Truth be told, I was a bit turned off at first by the extensive tutorials during the first few fights. I understand that the battle system needs some explanation, but I'm personally a lerning-by-doing kind of player, so having a bunch of textboxes interrupting the battles was a bit tedious to me. I still like the combat system and especially the teamwork aspect of it.

Overall, a great and polished entry to this jam. Good job!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback and so glad you enjoyed the acting!

Your comments on the tutorials are really valuable to me. I was super scared of straining player's patience and slowing down battles, so if I were to do something again, I would definitely lighten the tutorial section a bit, if it was there at all. Thank you for sticking with it and seeing the rest of the battle system!

Now I'm slightly sad to have had the twist spoiled on stream because it was a doozy!

That said, it's well-written, with actually a lot of clever foreshadowing that I didn't catch until subsequent playthroughs.

I agree with everyone that said this deserves a complete game with the same battle mechanics - it's a unique experience that is well-executed given the scope of the game, and it just makes me want to explore the concept in greater depth.

TBH I think the sidekick doesn't need their own attack skill as I only ever used it in their tutorial battle, but it's possible there are uses I didn't see.

Not sure if I would have liked some of the fights to go up in difficulty a half step or not - it's better to err on the side of "easy" for Jam games, so maybe it's fine. I was just itching for more complex encounters by the end :)

Developer

Really happy that you keyed in on the foreshadowing. I don't think anyone mentioned it yet, but it was subtle so why would they? So you got some spoilers, but also some insight into the clues I tried to leave.

Good point about the single Chonker attack. There is really just one single instance where it is the optimal strategy, and I ran out of time to implement other uses.

Not surprised you want a tougher system, given your punishingly challenging entry.  The enemies were probably 1 step harder when I first made the game, but I dropped the difficulty based on feedback. Balancing that is so hard!

Submitted

Agreed! Balancing is where I spent the majority of my time once the basic systems were set up. It's always a tough call but I do think you made the correct decision ease up on challenge, my personal preferences aside.

Kudos again on the writing. The TMNT reference was great, and the small clues that it wasn't just another fantasy setting paid off IMO.

Well, at this point, the requirements of making a good jam have been mastered by you, so i wont delve much in the perfect length duration and whatnots.

Again, a super strong entry. You made a hybrid of púzzle/battle/shield system and its quite fun. the shifting between your characters its super fun and of course a medullar part of the system, You always recommend  other ppl how they should expand their jams to  full fledge games and this I think, you should do on this one, cant imagine the variety and complexity of having 3 or 4 party members that combo and adapt to various barrier problems.

As always im impressed by your entry Human, but this one I think its  my favorite so far, seriosly, develop a full game with this mechanic and story.

Also, I love how you incorporate your family in your dev passion, it really adds =)

Congratz!

Developer

Thanks so much Varo! That means the world to me. Will the story continue? I'm not sure, but I hope to extend and improve the battle system one day! 3-4 actors might break my mind though.

My favorite game of the jam so far, and there have been some amazing ones. This game was super creative and a lot of fun to play. And just when the battle engine was starting to feel too "rock-paper-scissors" that boss battle at the end really ramped up the strategy . The story was perfect and fit the length of the jam perfectly, which is a tough thing to do. Just a really inspired game.

Hey that means a lot to me! Thanksso much  for the kind comments.

Jeeeez, this looked and played amazing! Loved the battle system, nice work!

this is has a unique battle system... and i like it, ite reminds me of legend of legaia. and that little monster reminds me Betamon from digimon world 3.

your game bring so much nostalgia.... i really like it.
i think the voice act simple but kind of unique.

Developer

Funny I never played those games, but I'm happy you got a dose of nostalgia regardless.

Another top-notch entry by Human! The writing is hilarious (with a devious twist) and the battle system is an impressive creative feat!

Submitted(+1)

Definitely enjoyed the cool battle system where you have to manage your resource wisely to pick the correct offensive and defensive moves... and ends with a satisfying button mash in the finale!

10/10 voice acting from the human family.

Battle systems are often the most tedious parts of (J)RPGs. Human's RPG here successfully marries Street Fighter's beat-down (or Super Smash Bros, if you will) replacing the tedious Dragon Quest style menus. Some battles are even puzzles, so there's a third genre mixed in here.

As for the rest, the under-30 minute plot takes as much of a 180 that it could successfully.

'Human' continues to contribute his expertise to the JRPG community completely unpaid but certainly not unrecognized.

Thank you for the feedback, and so glad that you enjoyed it! I spent a lot of time picking music so glad you approve of those choices.

Did not expect that ending. Don't want to spoil anything but the last half of the story was really cool and everyone should play it to the end. The combat was intimidating for me at first but once I got full control it came together. The writing was also really good, you're great at bringing characters to life.

A solid entry in all departments, as expected of my rival.

Developer

Rivals!? Man, to be considered for rivalry is an honor. Thanks for the kind comments. I'm expecting greatness from your entry as well!

Couldn't play on browser, but I think a game like this shouldn't even be  on a browser, you definitely should download it, well worth playing!
Nice work, really liked the combat, for me, the more action and movement the better!

Developer

Thanks ELV! After playing through in browser I decided the experience was too sub-par. Gotta be download only for now!

I don't recommmend this game if you're looking to relax during battles. Action Tactical RPG should we call that ? :) Story well written! I love the twist. Dragonbones battlers always make games alive, it's always nice to see them in action. Well done tutorial and battles! Lots of fun!

Developer

Thank you Manu - you made the game possible!
