How does the game fit the theme?
The game is a round-based survival platformer. At the beginning of each round, the player must choose a difficulty level, which determines the quality of the rewards they receive at the end. This allows them to take on greater risks for better rewards.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Everything was created from scratch during the jam. Some code was adapted from previous projects, but it was still written anew.

Damn, what a joy to play!

The theme implementation is spot-on - really well executed.

Clean, tightly scoped, and easy to understand - exactly what a game jam entry should be.

Visually stunning and paired with amazing sound design.

Fantastic entry overall!

Really enjoyed this game, it felt like a good old arcade experience! Also the idea of increasing difficulty for better rewards is pretty well-executed here! The FM synth music by wwhhooami is really good and catchy, particularly the wave theme reminded me a bit of Yousuke Yasui's music, kinda want to have the soundtrack for this separately (mp3 or wav)!

Also yay for controller support!

glad you enjoyed it!

soundtrack is avaible for free on my bandcamp   here

absolutely phenomenal art and sound! intuitive controls, solid gameplay, a very well made game!

Right off the bat, the visuals look absolutely STUNNING, and I love the Sega Genesis-like music, and the gameplay definently deserves a mention. This game is basically a Halloween-themed arcade-style platformer where you must survive as long as possible while defeating enemies and progressing through each room, and kind of something I would make nowadays (Even though I only made one game in Godot 4). The CRT filter deserves some recognition, and works very similarly to how retro-style indie games and 3D horror games have a CRT filter option for a VHS-like effect, and I even added it to my itch.io collection! Overall, 4.8/5 stars. FANTASTIC work, alvesito, Tetraminose, and wwhhooami. Y'all definently earned another spot in my collection. 🎃🩻🪄

Also, y'all could check out my game, Owlet and the Biscuit Tower, if y'all have the time. It's actually my first ever game made in Godot 4, and it's actually pretty popular right now (Go check the "New & Popular" games tagged Difficult), and I think it'll be worth your time. Thanks a lot if you play the game, and you can give me some feedback in the comments as a bonus too!!

Wow.  If this popped up in my feed, I wouldn't be able to tell it's a game jam game.  No notes.

High-quality sprites, animations, background flair, scene transitions, music, and SFX.  Even the controls themselves are intentionally hobbled just a bit so that you're not going to be able to reliably jump over every enemy or move and shoot at the same time.  This puts up some real consequences if you are low on health and decide to go for the ruby anyway.  Level up options are meaningful but not game-breaking.  Health refills come at the cost of a forgone upgrade.  Just really great tension and balance all around.

Masterfully done, y'all!

I clicked because the name amused me and am so, so glad I did. Leaving the menu music open just to jam to it while writing this. Feels like the art and music are basically perfect? I mean, there’s too much crash cymbal towards the end of the loop in the main game imho but that’s just a matter of taste. Love the palette for the art. Truly feels like a forgotten classic game that time forgot, like “hey you remember Glorbo on the Neo-Geo Pocket?”

It comes with some pretty old school sensibilities about character movement and weightiness, that I don’t necessarily love but it felt more like “wow this actually takes work to be good at and I don’t have the time for it right now” than tedious and unfun. I didn’t like that being able to hold down fire to keep shooting was locked behind a (temporary?) upgrade, and it felt very punishing but that choosing anything but insane would be a little boring? Maybe that’s a me problem.

So far I think this is the best entry I’ve tried and hope y’all get the recognition you deserve for this awesome game!

Very nice visuals! Sounds are great too. Reminds me greatly of older mobile games like those from Nitrome.

I felt like the difficulty choices at the start wasn't really that interesting to begin with.  I think most people at their own skill level will only stick to one choice no matter what.

Other than that the gameplay itself is pretty nicely done. Good job on this entry!

Slick game, nicely put together.

Really polished and fun! Thought the choose-your-difficulty twist was pretty clever and added a lot to the game. The only complaint I have is that the font is really hard to read in some places when it's not spaced out. I had a really hard time reading the powerup and difficulty descriptions. Other than that, I really enjoyed your game.

Thanks for playing!! The text not being readable seems to be an issue with the font we used sadly :/. From what I’ve seen, usually just making the game fullscreen (F4 key) or zooming in/out of the page fixes it, but it’s definitely something we’re planning on fixing for a post-jam version. Glad you enjoyed it!

this game is really polished. The art is cool, animations are really good. Gameplay is nice.  keep it up! Really good job!

The music is very nice

the 3 of you cooked really hard on this one. I just wanted to keep on playing. Love it if you saw the enemy enter the door to give you a bit of warning, and the pooling of slimes on a ledge was tedious to deal with. Those are some minor gripes to my fav game thus far this jam. Can't believe how aesthetic and cohesive it all was.

Sick game! So good to have a game with controller support! Very polished art and music and the game feels amazing!

Really impressed with how many unique item and weapons were in the game. The enemy too are all very thoughtful made and each brings a unique challenge!

I think if the game could be more fast paced and more action focused. Currently it feel very methodical and rewards me when I'm cautious and play it slow. But I want to jump in the action! Maybe that's just my personal taste in game, either way would love to see what you awesome devs make in the future! 🙌🙌

Looooove the artwork!!! Didn't enjoy playing it that much though, the keybindings were pretty strange, but the controller integration is impressive.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! If I may ask, which keybinds would you be most comfortable with? I tried to include as many standardized options as I could think of^^

Submitted

I think the shooting should of been left for the right hand like maybe numpad  0 or right control or even just left click. the shooting keybind under the movement is a bit awkward :)

Developer(+1)

You can actually shoot using both left click and the J key, if you’re controlling the character with WASD. Or you can use Z if you control it with the arrow keys. It’s all listed under the “Controls” section of the game’s page!

Submitted

My bad I didn't see the left click was an option

Great keep going

Great visuals, Gorblo never looked so gorblo!

I like it because it reminds me of old games I love. I also enjoy that you can use the environment as a weapon. A few things I didn’t like as much are:

  • The character movement felt heavy and not very maneuverable (though that might just be a matter of getting used to it).

  • Closed spaces with no escape (there are only a few, but still) where the only option is to shoot at enemies coming toward you and hope to kill them before they reach you.

  • In the early levels (playing on yellow difficulty), it felt like there were too many enemies, each requiring several hits to kill, which didn’t feel difficult but rather a bit tedious.

That said, I did enjoy the game—I just wanted to share my honest point of view. Good job!

The art style is so amazing!!
Very fun and lots of replayability. Has some audio issues (audio stutter and lag), but besides that, the game was really polished.
Very good job!!!

Developer (2 edits)

The audio stuttering should be fixed now, it was apparently a Chromium specific issue. If it still gives you trouble, the Windows downloadable build should work fine.

Thanks for your reply! Glad you liked it!
