That was quite interesting but, at the same time, a bit too challenging. I was unable to pass the cave part of level 2. Am I right that you need to rust yourself to a certain degree to be able to jump at a certain height?

Developer

Hi Wandering Peak, thanks for playing our game! It’s a really tricky jump. Rusting yourself can help! But I find it’s best to really make sure you are jumping at the last possible second and really holding the spacebar down for maximum jump!

Including rusting in the game is completely new to me. It was fun🙂

Developer

Thank you. It was an interesting mechanic to program.

The rain was such a great inclusion, it made the third level seem especially desperate when combined with the music. Something about the rust decreasing Russ's mobility when it got too high really increased my connection to the character as well.

It’s so great to hear that Alyssa! WE had discussions about heightening the connection between player and character in design meetings. Glad we could give you a little adventure with our little robot!

Nice game, I liked the atmosphere!

Developer

Thanks Anamura! We’re so happy you enjoyed it.

Works great on mobile. The rust mechanic is a cool concept, but it needs some tuning. You could have points where the rust is removed and some platforms or puzzles that require rust to advance. The game itself gave me serious Cave Story vibes. Nice work!

Some great ideas there. ;)

Very nice game! I agree with the other comments regarding the rust mechanics. It's both the most interesting mechanic in the game and also the most frustrating, but the game is still enjoyable.
I liked the visuals too, they're really great.

Really cute idea, I liked jumping around avoiding all the water and hiding from the rain. If you expand on this, the latter offers a lot of fun ideas you could come up with, like actual rain clouds on screen that move about that the player can take cover from before timing their next tough jump.

Developer

Thanks and that is a fun idea!

Great little game. Cool graphics and fun to play. Well done!

Cute game! I thought the rust mechanic was a nice addition. but it does get to a point where you simply cannot advance further throughout the game. I'd say at that point just trigger an end game screen and allow people to restart, or maybe implement checkmarks??

Overall good game!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. Once the rust meter is full it should give you the option to restart the level - is this not happening for you? If so, there may be a pretty big bug. Thank you again, I appreciate you play testing this game!

I love the rust mechanic, and the graphics and soundtrack work really well together.
As other commenters have pointed out, the rust mechanic can create a negative feedback loop, where I simply can't advance further.

I'd love to see a couple tweaks to that mechanism, as well as a sound fx that emphasizes the rust build-up (like rusty grinding gears gaining in volume and adding psychological pressure).

Or maybe something that made the decision of where to quit a strategic choice -- like if on the next run you can use the last robot's body for spare parts?

In any case, that's all nitpicky stuff -- it's a fun game, and nice job putting this together within the time limit!

these are great suggestions. Thank you. I think for now, as an accessibility update, I will remove the rust damage applied when falling. We can see how that feels going forward. And then after the jam I would like to aplly some of the additive elements you described, like the robot bodies and grinding gears sfx! great ideas!

That was a really fun game ! the graphics were really cool, I loved the pixel arts ! as well as the SFX and the gameplay with the rust, however when a restarted the game I spawned on a different level, is that normal ? And sometimes the jumps were quite difficult but a really nice entry, congratulations !

Developer

ah yeah the thing where you restart on a the next level is a bug. I’ll patch that out tomorrow, thanks for pointing that out.

Really cute graphics, it fits the simple 2D style really well!

The rust slowing down the character is a neat idea, however as soon as it kicks in, because it's a platformer based on (sometimes a bit too unforgiving) jumps, it starts a negative feedback loop which makes it impossible to progress further after dying just once.

I would suggest having a different mechanic for replenishing it rather than that being equivalent to HP - i.e. when out of combat, press and hold a button to restore yourself!

Developer

Yes, I 100 percent agree. Have been in discussion with another level designer about this. We were also thinking that if we rewarded the player for trying and failing that the negative feedback loop might still work. One of the design choices we made was to force the player to decide when to quit (up to a point.) But what I am hearing is that it just feels too bad? What do you think, would some positive reinforcement help soften the blow of the feedback loop or is it just too punishing all together? One thing I have discovered is that our game is not that accessible because of this. really hard core platform players love the punishment, while the rest of us find it daunting (myself included lol.)

Submitted(+1)

Mhmm yeah I getcha. I'm not a hard core platform player myself either, although I think even for more experienced users it might feel too punishing since it might feel detracting from the game loop and feel more like a "bug" or accidental gameplay element; I can see how it is a creative idea though!

Personally, I would only leave some classic health depletion as a way to make players decide if risking & advancing, or taking it safe and restarting. With the rust making you slow, it doesn't really give the player a sense of risky challenge / reward if they wanna gamble and advance, rather it makes it clear immediately you wouldn't be able to advance after the point is reached, so it's a mechanic that is sudden and out of their control, and doesn't depend on their skill.

That's my two cents at least!

Awesome! Having the option in the settings I think is definitely a good compromise. Still challenging but absolutely playable now, it adds to the eerie melancholic atmosphere without being a hindrance. I got to the end and I really liked the bitter-sweet sad lil finale. Great job!

Developer

gratz!

I like the idea of the robot slowing down with rust, that’s actually quite a neat mechanic!
