seriously important question

I've been working so hard for too long -8 months- to make a half decent game, uploaded it on sale 100% so free, then not too few people see it but laterally only two people download it, it's the hardest I've ever worked and it's the worst performance i got, genuinely depressing!

so my question is this, why? why aren't the project visitors trying it? does it look like an ai generated page? nothing about the page or the game has anything to do with ai, i made everything myself, or does it look like a virus scam or something?

would you mind giving me feedback on that? that would be so kind, thank you

Some of the cause could be from this:

it spoils so much of the experience, so I took a couple random ones to give you some idea without ruining the experience.

I've viewed the shots and none of them inspire me to play. You really need to show shots which show the gameplay. If you're afraid for spoilers then what you should do is make screenshots which evokes curiosity instead. It's not easy but you should try.

That being said, it's really hard to get people to play your games lately. You really need to share it in multiple places.

thank you so much! you have no idea how helpful this is, I'll work on that, thank you for your kindness

My suggestion: Chat to people in a dev log not on your game page.

Use your game page to explain the game and what the player must do - is it first person, do they just randomly click things? Do characters talk to them. What can a player look forward to?

Make a video of the actual game play.  Thirty seconds of a 2-hour game is not going to give anything away.

omg I'm an idiot, thank you that's actually a really good advice, thank you so much!

I see this time and time again. First of all sorry to hear you are disappointed. You need to create a fanbase from the ground up. They don't just appear from nowhere.

I know but i thought that's what itch is for,  but i understand now thank you for pointing out the obvious sometimes people like me don't get it otherwise.

Releases are just lost in a sea of games. Good luck

experience the untold horrific atrocities committed multiple times through history, only you get to experience them firsthand, you have no idea how absurd a human can get.

Besides valid points mentioned by previous posters, the lines above do not feel enticing, to put it mildly. Are you playing as a victim of some historic genocide being slaughtered? Why would I want this experience?

I was so focused on the element of surprise and exploration that i forgot these basic points, i guess you can't have that unless you're really known, thank you so much for pointing that out! that's so kind of you

does it look like a virus scam or something

Yes. 100% sales are often one of two things. Malware in disguise. Or games that are not worth their prize and use a "sale" as a marketing ploy.

For doing a sale, one should be an established seller of goods, in my opinion. Doing a sale on something that people would not want to play, even if it were free, seems kinda odd.

After glancing on your page, I did not know what the game is about or how it would be played. Screenshots and tags are bland, non commital and boring. Looked like a generic walking simulator in a haunted house type of game. Without the haunting, as per description.

3D, Atmospheric, Historical, Horror, Indie, No AI, Psychological Horror, Singleplayer, Story Rich

No AI is a meta tag. You do not need to tag it manually. All games on Itch are indie. Singleplayer is not really an important tag - no one will assume it is multiplayer, unless you tag it multiplayer. You have 1 genre and 10 tags available. The only interesting tag you use is historical.

The rest does not tell me much, besides it being a horror game. There are many horror games on Itch. I am not a fan of horror games, so I cannot tell you, how appealing your page is for the target audience.

Thank you so much! for taking the time to write all these extremely helpful points, I especially think last point where there are a lot of horror games lately that even if you make a half decent one it get drowned, not saying that's the only reason the page DEFINITELY needs a lot of work it probably the bigger issue, thank you again for taking the time you're too kind!

Maybe break some core information down to a bullet list to make it easier for visitors to understand the premise of your game in a single glance.

Also, and maybe this is just be, but this part feels a little belittling, which put me off:

It has a deep story and a lot of implicit details so pay attention.

Also, eight months isn't that much time if this is your second game. You're still learning, and this takes time itself. Keep it up! Keep improving your work and your skills. You're doing fantastic already if this is one of your earliest efforts!

sorry about the line, and thank you so much for those are really good points too, also thank you for the kind words!

The visual style is bleak and depressing, which is not for everyone. I think it just needs a bit more polish, this same concept in a retro PSone style would likely get more attention.
