How does your game represent Mode?
We took the creative liberty of applying the theme "mode" through the remaster mode switch mechanic and building the entire idea around remastered game vs. original game playthrough. Player is playing as a streamer tackling the challenge of playing 2 games(classic and remastered) at once with one controller.

As we build the game with the original vs. remastered in mind, the mode switch affect the entirety of the graphics and audio. Switching between them also affects various elements in the levels: enemy behavior, rotating platforms and spike traps.

There are also two difficulty modes: normal and hard. Hard mode offers more challenges with a secret reward in the end for those who dared to try ;)

--

For those who wants to do all the fortune cookie collectibles: There are 11 in total. 10 hidden in normal mode, and 1 from finishing hard mode. You can check what you've collected in extra section of the main menu. We didn't have time to add completion meter but if you want to try to unlock all 11 good luck!

Hey great job guys! Love your take on the jam theme, and I want to call out that it must've been a decent amount of work to have to make the game's art assets twice. But you guys nailed it, and there are tons of details I appreciate in both remastered and retro mode. And the game is just a ton of fun - I love the mechanic of throwing your staff in to a wall and bouncing off of it, that's a pretty simple yet fun spin on this type of platforming game. You guys did awesome work on all fronts, well done!

so looking at the game page i was getting a little suspicious. “was this actually a real game?” i was thinking that the whole remaster vs. original thing was the mode gimmick, and i was right! this turned out REALLY good. on their own the movement abilities are already SUPER solid, i could see this already being a great game even without the twist, but the twist makes it even more interesting to play. i loved the way the enemies switched behavior depending on which mode you’re in, especially the rabbits! the game also looks incredible!! i can’t believe you went through all the effort to make every single asset twice, while keeping both styles consistent and super cute. (i also loved the way the aspect ratio changed in retro mode, it made it feel even more authentic!) good job (and good japes)!!!

Thank you! I'm glad you noticed and enjoyed those little details we did!

This was really good! I was genuinely confused at first, did they just remaster a favorite childhood game? Ha. The level design was very clean and allowed the player to use abilities in creative ways. Fun interpretation of the theme.

You're not a real gamer if you never played Legend of Lu (original) back in the 90s 😂

Really great job on finishing that within the time of the jam. Controls were really smooth and satisfying. Overall super polished and complete. The thing I like the most were the 3 energy flames and how they are spend for different actions. I have never played the original game but I already see much potential in this kind of energy system.

beat my speedrun(normal mode)!
(should be easy, I died a lot here)

Crazy Stuff!! Good job with this one guys, played it quite a bit, real fun!

This is easily the best game in the jam I have played so far. Extremely competent platforming and excellent design. Incredible job.

Incredible! Big “The Messenger” vibes. Controls are tight, level design makes good use of all the mechanics. Wow!

Fuck I would've paid money for this.

This felt like a complete game! I feel like most of all the level design is really well done. I do feel like outside of changing the  two different modes should change the gameplay a bit more, but the amount of content and quality of it speaks for itself. I would be surprised if this didn't end up as one of the best games here!

Thank you 🥺

Seriously impressive! The amount of content and the precision of the level design for this game was really awesome. I loved the bo staff mechanics, and I really liked the retro vs remastered approach to the theme. Nearly everything felt smooth and responsive, and the art/music was superb.

If I had to nitpick one thing, I would say that the boss battle at the end could have been designed a bit better. The hit boxes for the enemies seem to be a little inconsistent, and I think it could be telegraphed a bit better that you have to hit each enemy in succession (at least I think that was the idea; it was hard to tell, which reinforces my point).

This is my favorite game of the jam so far! You all should be proud of what you made. Way to go!

(P.S. I was able to beat hard mode. Very frustrating (in a good way), but still worth it for the end reward.)

Thank you!

Our boss is indeed the least polished because it's done last and too close to the jam deadline 🥲

I'm glad you enjoyed our game! Great job on finishing that hard mode! (I haven't even finished that)

Really nice game! Great art and music + some nice level design -- really loved how you introduced the switching mechanic in the tutorial, caught me by surprise :)

Awesome work to your whole team!!

Love the changing modes to make things flip in the game. The moving platform changing being super cool.

AWESOME GAME! I had a lot of fun, even if some parts were pretty difficult. The final boss part isn't that hard if you do it fast enough, but I loved that you put a little bit of story. I didn't like the fact that wall slide is automatic and not triggered by actively moving against the wall and slow you down so much, but maybe that's just me. Overall a really fun game, hope it gets worked on to be a bigger game release!

Really impressive work. These kinds of games are rarely a success in jams because there are so many different aspects to get right, and content/levels to make. But you pulled it off! I do think that the mechanics could use some tweaking. Increasing player speed and increasing gravity would make the character feel much better to play - but still the character controller is impressive. The stick throwing mechanic is awesome. In my opinion, the mode switching isn't that interesting a concept to me, I've seen similar stuff before. Still, it's executed fantastically.

The music is very fun to listen to and I like the idea behind it with the whole playing 2 games with one controller and being a streamer :p I def saw a few YT videos with that concept that are always fun to watch!

I enjoyed this! Cute character and graphics. Very creative platforming mechanics. I really like the energy indicators showing me how many jumps I still can get to do! Nice job!!!

I found it pretty difficult to figure out which walls you're allowed to attach your stick to at first but I think I got the hang of it in the end. Perhaps could have used some more clarity there. Besides that there's not a lot I feel I can critque. It's such an adorable looking game. The way the music switches between modern and retro is great with a catchy soundtrack too. Keyboard controls were pretty unwieldy but playing on a controller feels awesome. I can see a lot of talent went into this. I've finished normal mode. The level design of normal mode at no point felt unfairly difficult. I'm intrigued to try hard mode when I have more time. Thank you for a fun experience!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

For keyboard, we have keybind option in start screen > settings or in pause(p) > settings

Good luck finishing our hard mode, you'll need it!

Incredible. you killed it

Loved the idea of going back and forth between an oldschool retro mode and current day platformer! Some of the platforming was a little unforgiving for my liking, and the controls were a bit tough to get used to and pull off tight moves in a short amount of time, but I still really enjoyed the idea and game as a whole - nice job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it :D
