This was a lot of fun! Reminded me a bit of Edge of Tomorrow with being able to keep trying until you get it perfect. The option to go back to your last decision helped keep the whole thing frustration-free and the grading/summary at the end encouraged replaying till you got the best ending. Very engaging and well done!

Developer

Appreciate it, thanks!

Seconding the *Aliens*/*Predator* vibes, with the beasts' descriptions, pretty creppy! Trying to stay alive, balance your weapons, and maybe save others is trickier than it seemed (sorry, Razor), but it made for a fun "adventure" game. The actions to keep yourself safe are not always the sneakiest ones... Fun :P

(I weirdly had some issue with the new text scrolling all the way to the bottom when loading, forcing me to scroll back up for some reason... dunno if that's fixeable, but just a head's up)

Thanks for reading! Not sure on the text scrolling down. This was my first time using Ink and I tried using the #CLEAR tag on most threads, so I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be used in that way haha.

I love movies like Aliens and Predator so I was drawn right to this one!

I liked its straightforward genre take and laser-sharp focus. It was nice to have a little Choose-Your-Own-Adventure quasi-game-mechanic with the ammo, too! Very survival horror!

There were several problems with things like its/it's and stuff like that but overlooking that, it was a nice light read.

Ideally, I’d have my text run through a grammar/spell check in the future haha! Thanks for checking the game out!

Pretty cool! I think your narration is pretty good and I get a clear idea of what's ahead and the inclusion of a soft retry button is quite nice! I certainly don't enjoy restarting entire stories whenever I mess up when I want to test things out. Also, the choices carry appropriate consequences without feeling like they don't make sense. That out of the way, I want to point a few things out in hopes of helping out in case you want to go back and fix them:

Some choices look out of place when they show up alongside the story text instead of disappearing like other choices, like "Lean back and enjoy the silence" but there were a few others. Also, I had several cases where the game would stop loading text for me and force me to restart. I haven't seen this happen with other exclusively-ink games so I wanted to point it out. It might be something on my end or not, I have no clue! Hopefully, it's just a small issue on my end.

Overall, good job!

Developer

Yea, for some of the options, I should’ve set the ink script to not print them out, as they don’t make sense to be with the rest of the story. Do you happen to remember where it got stuck?

Appreciate the feed back!

Submitted

I don't remember the specifics, I'm sorry! I should have made screenshots. Each time it got stuck, it was at random points, that's why I'm a bit confused as to whether they're exclusively on my end or not.

SPOILERS

Haha, you knew we'd try to conserve ammo by sneaking. The perfect trap!

Thanks! I don’t see an entry for you, so if you submitted something you want me to check, please link it!

I didn't, but thank you, you're too kind!

Nice! I got the best ending on my first try (I think) - saved Razor, won the day. I did try to kill myself right at the start as well just for fun though. A short, tight little jaunt, which I assume is relatively straightforward in the sense that every wrong decision = death? Cute use of the theme as well, heh.

Developer

Yea, you got the best ending on the first try haha. Thanks for playing!

Cool take on the theme. I like the set ups and payoffs. Talking to someone that gives me a knife that I can use later made my choices feel impactful.

You’re a one person team so I think you accomplished a solid story in the time frame. Only suggestions would be to give some meaning behind why the newest member is taking the lead. Also, this elite team seems to run out of amo quickly. It would help if the player is given a choice that leads to the team needing to fight off a zombie horde, which results in everyone having low amo. Or something Ali g that line.

Overall, solid work.

Developer

Good take, I think adding a scene where a horde of zombies attacks would help explain everyone being low on ammo. Thanks for the suggestion!

Well, I didn't expect to die on my first choice so that was fun😂. On the second playthrough I manage to survive my first day but Razor dies. This was a fun to be honest.

There were grammar errors here and there of course. Also some sentence which didn't make sense, one of them being: "You both keep extreme focus on the eye as you continue towards the research node. However, this causes Razor to not notice a puddle of blood on the floor and he trips." How does one trip over a puddle of blood?

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! and yea, “slip” would probably work better than trip in that context.

really appreciated the quick restarts and it allowed me to finish with momentum, which for this kind of story matters a lot. good work!

Thanks!

I died in refusing to get out of the helicopter lol. Then I got munched on. Then "It's been a good roll" ba dum tss! Theme comes up at the end, narration's good, story follows a lot of zombie swat scenarios, and you get to die in gory ways (yay)

Developer(+1)

I think you got all the deaths, congrats! Thanks for playing haha.

Not super long, but the choices definitely felt meaningful & also had consequences that were reasonably predictable within the logic of the story, so it wasn't like I was just guessing.  When I got the "best ending" it felt like I had earned it by making the right decisions.  The restart option after deaths was also nice.  The theme interpretation was creative.

Also, the "start over" button at the end seemed to be broken in some way (the story hit a dead end the second time through).

Developer

Thanks for playing! Not sure why the start-over button hit a dead end the second time through. I’ll look into it.

A great story and lots of action, centered around choices, which is what every good interactive fiction game should strive for. I appreciated that there was a “restart from last decision” option, and that the game told you (if you get to the end) whether or not you got the ‘best’ ending. Game was long enough to be interesting, but short enough that playing through it multiple times wasn’t annoying. Great job!

Thanks for checking the game out Andrew!

The ideas and action were strong in this game. I had to score  low on theme because the theme didn't appear at all for me, but it's possible I just didn't reachthat point in the game. I got killed qute quickly, but didn't really know why, so it would have been good for the significance of choices to be clearer. The writing could also have been tighter, but appreciate this is hard to do under time limits as ideas take time to percolate. Strong action writing though, well done!

Thanks for checking the story out!

Yeah, the theme was with the last monster, so it wasn’t an overall theme or anything! I tried my best to keep dying not punitive, as you can go back to the last decision at death.

I tried checking your game out, but you had a problem with the ink script. Send me a comment if/when you fix it, and I’ll check it out. Thanks!

Ah! I don't think I understood that... I think being notified of death felt terminal - maybe because I'm quite literal, so felt the game was over. Yep, we broke our Ink unfortch. Our programmer is snowed at work but he's going back in to fix it as soon as he has time and headspace. Thanks for checking us out anyway!
