Use of the limitation
You think you win in the end, but you actually did the opposite (no spoilers here I'm afraid!)...

I don't eat cookies. Dark chocolate does the trick.

Ooh, I really liked the story, and the artwork and intro cutscene were so pretty!! In terms of the gameplay, I really liked that unlike the typical "connect-3" puzzle games, here, each color gemstone has it own motion patterns, kind of giving them a bit of a personality of their own, wouldn't you say? ;)

Very nice, enjoyable game, overall! (Also a very big fan of the striped cursor, hehe!)

Developer

Hey thank you very much!
I'm really glad you liked it!

Well the problem is just when they're having coffee during breaks together, they always end up arguing because their personalities are so different.
Sometimes I wish they were all the same :(

Lol.

I experimented a bit with different colors for the mouse cursors, thanks.

Developer

Btw. I drastically improved the cutscene ,  made the cutscene music change as it should, and added 3 levels, to make this game pop more,
if you want to check out the improved version, I find it much better:

Hello,

Good game, with nice story telling.
The use of limitation was interresting. :-)
The art was neat and the music nice too.

Have a nice day.

Developer (1 edit)

Hi,
Thank you,   I'm happy to hear that   you enjoyed the game with the story and art!
Nice day to you.

Decent puzzler, seems like it doesn’t have much room for expanding on puzzle difficulty other than making a bigger board. I had an ok time with it. The graphics aren’t bad but I wasn’t really feeling the mobile-game style storytelling and sound effects. Good effort for a quick jam, I think this would be stronger with faster gameplay and more focus on the actual game than the atmosphere. Potentially a version with multiple different board sizes and new randomly spawning gems after clearing lines instead of simply reaching a win state? There’s a lot of derivative avenues to explore off this idea. Either way, even if it wasn’t to my liking, it’s a solid effort. Keep it up!

Developer

I'm glad you see potential in the game.

Thank you for playing.

I'm afraid I'm too flat brained for this :D

When you click on the question mark icon there is a quick explanation how you can move the pieces.

Here's a copy:

You need to have four complete rows of the same color (so a row of 6  pieces).
So you move the pieces around until you have the four rows! ;)

I knew how to play, I'm just stupid XD

Developer

😉

The art style is fun and very different. I thought the gameplay would be boring because normal bejeweled, but it wasn't. I really had to think about and use the different ways to move to "win?" the game. Fun game!

Developer

Hey, thank you very much, and happy to hear that you appreciate the art style!
Yes, giving the pieces different movement styles makes it all more strategic than the normal bejeweled, so I'm so happy that you say that.
That actually makes me think that it's worthwhile to create different levels (and each level you need to create more rows, in the last level 6 rows.)
Thank you for playing and thanks  for the comment!

Hey, I played your game on the stream

the skip intro button doesn’t work)

Please give my game a try if you have some time!

Developer

Hi!

Thank you for playing my game.

The Skip button works, but there is a bug when you click the restart/reshuffle button the game blocks.
I have already fixed that bug, but I wait until we're allowed to update the game before re uploading it.

I have already played your game ;)

Cheers.

ok

I made an updated version if you want to try (also without the bug):

Very interesting game, I loved the "fairy" animations and the art style in general, the music makes the atmosphere feel mystical, and the game was really enjoyable while not being too difficult.

Developer

Thank you very much!

I'm so happy you enjoyed it and enjoyed the different elements!
I made sure it's not too hard. I have participated in several game jams. And while I was initially guilty of the committing the same crime, after a while it just becomes annoying how difficult so many jam games are.
So I wanted my game be playable for people :)

I'm glad you liked the animations.
I created the character animations  quickly myself, based on asset images, and the girl I turned a stock photo into a drawing then animated it.

Thanks for playing the game and the nice comment!

Btw. I made a first updated version if you want to try:

An interesting take on the matching game

Developer

Thank you! :)

Submitted(+1)

This is a very good game! I like the concept of colors being assigned to chess pieces and then having to put them in a row. It was a pretty interesting puzzle game, and the ending was surprising and totally matches the limitation of being your own enemy! My score was 860

Developer

Thank you, I' happy to hear you like the game!

And glad you found the ending surprising!

860 isn't bad as a score at all.

Submitted(+1)

The end was REALLY suprising. I was like "wait... what?!" and then "oh... got it... the limitation!" :-)

Good game, I like it. Easpecially the way you integrate the story plot - it is almost like a theatre performance on stage.

The only thing I wóuld add is an upfront description of the patterns  the different colors change places. The highlighting, however, was a great choice to support making the right moves.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thank you for playing my game!

I'm glad you found the story plot surprising and enjoyed the 'performance'!
The movement    patterns are described when you click the  tutorial button.

Do you mean   to have an additional description during the intro?

Submitted(+1)

No no. I just missed the tutorial button. I am looking for tutorials on the games page, but that's then "my problem" - you did everything right.

Nice game, Mr. Lion! Yours, Mr. Tiger :-D

Developer

I appreciate it, Mr Tiger!
We big cats gotta stick together! :)

Yours truly,
Mr Lion :)

Developer

oh btw. i remember I  created an animation of the tiger riddle painting.
Do you like tiger riddles?
If you don't, my apologies just ignore this   :P  :)

This is so awesome! I was looking and looking ... needed your solution for solving it. Thanks for sharing - didn't know this one.

Developer

lol no problem! Glad you liked it!

Developer

I made an updated version. The tutorial button is now animated, so hopefully people will find it easier now! :)

Very cool art & cutscenes! You've also built all the programming functionality for a row matching game and I liked that the different colors moved differently. Short game but definitely a good experience!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much!

I'm very happy to hear that you had a good experience, despite the short game and the little time I had to prepare it.

Actually most of the time I spent creating the programming functionalities for the row matching. I used a game engine, so it wasn't as straight forward as let's say coding it with arrays directly, in a language like python for example. But it's been fun nonetheless.

Thank you for playing!

Got 940! Looking at your reply to your feraswheel, I think that gives me bragging rights.

Anyways, this is a very interesting take on match-puzzle games!

Having more levels to approach the mechanic differently would've been neat, but a game jam is a game jam, I can't blame you for not having enough time!

(Also, being turned into a raven doesn't sound too bad)

Developer (3 edits)

Thank you, I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed the game!

Yes, 940 is pretty solid!
Congrats for that, you have passed the exam to enter bragging camp! XD

I could   maybe make  4 levels,   first you need 2 rows, then 3, 4,5 to advance.

I'm not sure if I will have the time to make another level where you need to complete all 6 rows, because then I need to change the entire algorithm, so that I have exactly 12 stones of each color. It's very doable, just not sure if I will have the time.

I will also improve the intro video, and add more music change during the dialogue, because it's kind of quickly thrown together    right now lol!
I also already  fixed the bug that you cannot restart/reshuffle the board. I will update it as soon as we're allowed after the jam!

I think the ghoul has opened up a new job post, he's looking    for a raven slave that will serve his every whim for all eternity.
Should I tell him that you're interested in the post? :)

Submitted(+1)

Yeah, just see how much time you want to spend on the game!

In a way, I do feel like the intro has its own 'charm', but probably not the intended 'charm',  haha

As for the job post, if I get days off from being a raven and I can cross out the slavery, I'll take the deal! Otherwise, well... I'm gonna have to refuse this humble offer!

Developer (1 edit)

Oh okay?
Could you describe that 'charm', why it has a charm?
If there is a charm to it, maybe I won't need to take the time to improve it?

Well you see, then maybe being an eternal raven slave is worse then it sounds. There are no days off ever.
Have some pity on that girl! haha XD

Submitted(+1)

Ah, I guess it's the game jam charm?  There's something amusing about a cutscene that was quickly put together, haha. I wouldn't use it if it was some big release!

...and I suppose I'll take back my words! Hope she enjoys her time regardless, though!

Developer

Oooh I see! :)

Let's hope she does! ^^

Submitted(+1)

I liked this! Great work, Got a score of 720. Dont know if that was good or not?

Sound, Into, Outro, graphics and all was great. Would have been great to make more levels, or another way to add more replay-ability, but other then that. great work!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Great job!

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game!
The best possible score would be something close to 1000, maybe right below.
If you solve it using less moves, you get a better score!

I really wasn't able to add more than one level    in 3 days :P
