Hello everyone! It's great to see so much excitement for this little idea I had. If folks have any questions or thoughts about the Jam, feel free to share them here and I will reply as soon as I am able. Just to recap some of the questions I've been asked in other places:

  • You are welcome to collaborate with as many people as you like as freely as you like
  • This jam is for physical "games" as a medium, but multimedia submissions are welcome
  • Your submission should have an itch.io page, however, it is fine for elements of your submission (such as videos or digital assets) to be hosted on other sites. Just be sure they are linked on the first page. 
     

If I like the concept, am I allowed to make it a real game afterward?

The short answer is, I am not a cop and I will not stop you. If you feel inspired to turn something into a full game, then go for it. I would just discourage people from intentionally using this jam to create a rough draft or a proof of concept for something they are already intending to complete.

I had this EXACT thought noodling with ideas. I made a really cool cover and got lightly bummed that I couldn't flesh it out fully 馃ぃ

You are welcome to create a new community topic to seek collaborators or offer your skills. Other than that, I don't have any way to facilitate finding a team.

I was curious, would something like various disconnected/assorted pages of a full rulebook (that is both fictional and doesn't exist) count? What about something like a "example of play" section, where the mechanics are referred to and vaguely shown, but you don't really get the full context or mechanics of the game?

I'm thinking of creating a rule book, found footage style; to that end, dDo you have any resources, or suggestions, for producing an old/vintage look? Perhaps in the style of Vermis?

I am not a visual artist, so I am not sure where to start looking for something like that. I would recommend creating another discussion thread where hopefully others can offer suggestions.

Hello, English is not my language. Can I use a AI translator to translate my text?

This would still be against the rules. AI translation is also unreliable. 

Non-English submissions are allowed if you are more confortable with that.

Hi! I love this idea! does it have to be a TTRPG? I don't know much about them, but if it has to be, I can take the challenge. 

Also, do you think there's a posibility of having a discord in the future, for easier communication?

Yes, your jam submission does need to be TTRPG themed, but because of the open-ended nature of the prompt, the actual format can be just about anything. 

I hadn't considered creating a discord before (honestly, I was expecting this jam to get a fraction of the interest it generated). I don't have the capacity to manage another server myself right now, but if I can find someone I trust to do admin, then I will think about it. 

Awesome! I'm already thinking about what can I do, I have a few games in mind and a couple of them seem like something that's very hard to actually make, so this would be perfect for those!

Hi, I was also going to ask about a discord! I find being able to drip feed progress, and see everyone else鈥檚 progress, as the most exciting part of a jam! Plus, having a place to discuss jam entries would be really nice.

You have no reason to trust me, so I won鈥檛 be offended if you turn down the offer, I am happy to set up one up if you鈥檙e too busy, (although I don鈥檛 have the time to commit long-term to moderating it, so it would be locked-down at some point after the jam is over)

Could a soundscape (music, sound design, or both) be eligible as "anything else you can imagine"?

I'm thinking of taking my RPG book, Curse: The City of One Thousand Martyrs, and creating a guide to it as though it was a text-based computer game from the 80's. The guide would be an unofficial one made by message board members in the 90's.

I was thinking about working with the AP podcast that I'm a part of to create an actual play for a game that doesn't exist. What kind of rules should we abide regarding posting and all that?

There just needs to be *an* itch.io page. Anything that you post or upload to other sites should be linked on the itch page, but no files have to be uploaded to itch.

This sounds so fun, I am excited to see it when you make it!

I rely like this idea. My thought is to make 3 or 4 pages out of the middle of a rulebook. 

A thing I love doing is opening an older TTRPG splat book for a game I am not familiar with to a random page and trying to make sense of what is there. I want to capture that feel.

I am very happy that someone decided to make a Jam based on the concept of unplayable games. I am so excited about the things I want to make for this and to see what everyone else comes up with. For anyone looking for inspiration on this, there is a rather comprehensive book on fictional games called "Fictional Games: A Philosophy of Worldbuilding and Imaginary Play" by Stefano Gualeni and Riccardo Fassone. This by no means covers all kinds of unplayable games, but it's a good start.

Do puzzles count as a "game"? I'm making some player notes which contain (among stuff like character sheets and in-session moments) a bunch of puzzles that the players were trying to solve while playing a campaign of an unexplained TTRPG. While it's all presented as a bunch of old player notes, the focus on the project is the puzzles, so one may interpret the project as a puzzle book "disguising" itself as not a game. So, is this too game-like to fit the rules/spirit of this jam?

I think that fits the spirit of the game jam just fine. They're a game element but not a full game itself.
