This is so cool! the upgrade mechanic is so unique and the style is insane! As a fellow boxing game dev, I tip my hat to you soldier.

genuinely such a good game. i wasnt expecting a great story too. i haven't played punch out in a while, and this was a very fun way to reminisce. i like the puzzle aspect to fitting upgrades in, even if it felt a bit inconsequential except for the special moves. very very fun gameplay, and the visuals and sound are packed with personality. my main gripe is the font used, it gives a great vibe and fits the tone of the game and other art used in it, but its a bit hard to read, i couldnt quite figure out what characters were saying sometimes. which was a bummer because the dialogue is great. all around, very fun boxing game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks heaps for coming to play and leaving the feedback!

We've definitely heard this about the font and think you're right - while we liked it for the aesthetic, it can be quite hard to read and will be changed in the future :) Glad you enjoyed the puzzle system too - we definitely wanted to spend more time polishing / exploring / balancing it to make things feel worthwhile but fair.

Glad you enjoyed it :)

I haven't even played any similar games to this like Punch-Out, but this was SO much fun!!!
This one's making the collection for sure.

Developer

So nice to hear, thank you!

This is one of the best games I've seen in the jam so far! Excellent storytelling and gameplay.

Developer

Glad you liked it, thank you!

Very enjoyable! I grew up playing things like Punch-Out and Evander Holyfield’s Boxing so this was both new, yet nostalgic. I’m a a big fan! Good job and good luck. :D

Developer

Thanks so much for playing :) Glad you enjoyed it!

Awesome game!

I think the slowdown when hit could definitely be reduced, a single freeze frame or impact frame could inject some more juice and fun to it even. Other than that, not much to point to in terms of faults. Maybe a way to cancel punches faster, since some attacks come out so fast that I can't dodge in time? To be honest, the only real thing I'd complain about is that the video pitch is just gameplay with some music under it, rather than an actual bad game idea short or elevator pitch.

Always a fan of boss rushes in jams like these, and a top 50 game for sure!

Developer

Appreciate you playing and leaving the feedback!

I think you're bang on with this, we also love the idea of impact frames and having a bit more feedback! There is also definitely balancing issues and some of the animations for attacks are a bit quick, we're keeping a list of this for further development and polishing so thank you :)

We definitely didn't quite understand the premise of the video pitch in hindsight and made something more akin to a trailer, we were going to do a VO at one point, but we learn for next time definitely!

Glad you enjoyed it!

This was a really fun game and a creative take on the Punch out style of gameplay. The upgrade system is well designed and it is so satisfying when you are able to squeeze one more upgrade by moving around the others. Amazing job!

Developer

Yes! The reshuffling of the puzzle grid is one of my favourite parts too - the satisfaction of filling it completely :D Thanks for playing!

Am I going crazy or does the bug "speaking" audio pan between the left and right? That's so trippy but kinda added to the vibe of bugs imo.

This was an awesome game, really enjoyed it. The upgrade system is neat, the attacks are pretty readable, especially the stronger attacks, and it's got that nice "punch-out" vibe to it, while still feeling unique. I probably put the most time in this game out of any of the other I played. Great job with this!

Developer

Not going crazy! It does :)

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!

This was actually really fun to play! I loved how each boxer had their unique style you had to overcome and how nice it felt just to play. definitely deserving of top 50 imo.

(Also, is the beetle a reference to Gregor from that one book called The Metamorphosis?)

Developer(+1)

hehehehe yess, and theres many more references to discover!

Super slick and crunchy, this feels great to play. I love the absurd bug boxing premise. The upgrade tinkering between rounds is super satisfying.

Developer

Cheers, your game looked so professional I was mind blown, thanks for playing!

Really well done! First playthrough the game crashed when I clicked francis's fight though, so I played through again. My first two playthroughs were fun but, a little trivial due to just hammering enemies with +10 dmg.  Buuuuut, my last and final playthrough, I played with no augments. This was actually really challenging and fun! I spent over an hour on Francis but I am so happy I beat him, that was really really cool. I just wish there was a different (better?) ending for beating the game without using any augments. Like, mantis guy still gets butthurt about you using augments when you arent (I guess you have life support but still yk?) but yeah a really cool game and a really fun playthrough with no augments, great work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing and for the feedback! Impressive you did a playthrough wwith no augments, and thats a really good point about the mantis dialogue - I would want to have some sort of easter egg unlock or achievement for doing that in a bigger release for sure, like finishing Death's Door with the umbrella or Dead Space with the pistol.

Yeah balancing all the builds out is something I think we need to spend more time on - I think getting rid of special move pieces in favour of stacking a stat can definitely skew things, which is fun that you can explore builds but we definitely didn't leave as much time for playtesting and balancing as we would have liked to.

I'm yet to finish my no augment run, francis is no joke - and I designed his fight xD You've inspired me to go back and finish it.

Thanks! It was really hard but really rewarding. And yeah, a couple mechanics didnt turn out to be of much use for me:

  • Ducking (Most attacks that I would want to use this against hit low, so it doesnt work anyhoo.)
  • Large blue special move pieces (The special moves just were kinda useless when I could instead hit like a truck with 10 dmg. For example, the stun doesnt even seem to stun enemies, or if it does, its so short its not noticeable.)
  • (most of the time) rclick special move (This found use rarely, but usually there would not be enough time to use it considering it takes longer to hit, and it costs energy too. It might make sense actually for it to be faster than a normal attack, since it already costs energy to use)

Francis is really hard but here's what I learned: Francis has really really small windows, be really precise. During the "wave right to left" attack, you only have to dodge left once Im pretty sure, the second move doesnt hit center. During Francis's "looming" attack, the 1-2-3-4 attack I mean, dodge right RIGHT when his first fist is roughly between [halfway to you] and [hitting you], then dodge left when you make it back to the center. I think you just need to dodge one more time from there to avoid all hits from him!

Figuring out how to read his moves was really really cool. I found I needed to calm down and focus rather than just go at it like with using augments. Real props for actually making the game (very challenging!!) but beatable even without augments! Its really well done. Good luck on your no augment run!

Developer(+1)

I've gone and done it - my god francis with no upgrades is rage inducing ahaha, this felt like learning a tough dark souls boss the amount of times i died!

Also thanks for the feedback on upgrades / mechanics, I agree on all of these points across the board, and we're keeping tabs on this feedback for further dev :)

Submitted

Great job! And good luck on further development!
