Hi Khyi!,

Not sure if you checked your email, but you should have received one from itch/our jam. We have some prizes available for the jam participants, so make sure to claim a game key if you’d like one. Make sure to take a look and fill it as soon as possible!

Thank you for reminding me! Just filled out the form.

This was a nice little game! Took me a bit to dodge the obstacles but if you're doing careful maneuvering it seems doable. One thing I'd prefer changed is the echo to be more distinctly an echo and not your exact sound repeated.

Would be nice to have levels for a sense of progression, more scenery for variety, and maybe another goal like save your other canary friends! (follow their tweets)

I think it's a very original game. Once, a teacher told us that one blind young man he knew could play with roller skates in closed places, he could manage to do that  without fail with the sound, like bats. Your game make me remember that. Good job!

The canary in a coal mine concept made me laugh. Nice choice. You got a good thing going. Just add some progression. I feel the game is too easy as is. You can definitely go faster and have twistier paths. Especially if you go with a land when crashing or lives approach.

It´s cool, a very solid prototype. Lacks progression (maybe 5 or 6 levels and then a endless fly mode, maybe), but the mechanics work smoothly and well executed. It´s a very good starting point to a great audiogame ^^

Nice submission!

It’s a solid start. You should check out Midnight Echoes from our second jam, not only because of the similarities, but in how the levels are designed and introduce progressively harder challenges. That said, I do appreciate its current simplicity a lot.

Perhaps I would make one change: when you crash, just land on the ground, and let folks get back up and explore the same level until they get to the exit. I’m pretty sure birds are resilient like that? That would encourage me to explore and experiment with the world and the mechanics. Maybe there could be some secret bugs to eat along the way too?

Great ideas! I initially planned to have the bird simply hit the ground if you collide with anything, but felt that it might encourage players to just plow through the levels, since there's effectively no penalty for crashing. Maybe a life system would be a fitting middleground, where you can crash 3 or 5 or however many times before a game over.

I will check out Midnight Echoes, thank you for the recommendation.

Absolutely! Time is our most valuable resource as players. If a fail state is important, then lives like that would work pretty well. But to be clear, the current arcade-like approach of immediate and permanent death is fun too!

Congrats on the game - very well executed 👏

Admittedly, I wasn't totally sure if I was making any progress (I was probably flying into a wall for a long time before I started thinking about the wind 😅), and I don't think I ever got the echoes to work correctly, but I was able to make it out, and I could definitely see myself going back to this!

Also, great job on the tutorial and making all the sound effects clear at the beginning. I know for a game jam that can be hard to fit in, but it is super appreciated when it is there, and made the game all that much more clear ⭐️

I think this is a very well accomplished game. I wasn’t sure about it when I started, but as I kept going I started listening for the wind, and I think that was more efficient that listening for echoes.

For sound design I appreciate how you achieved the feeling of flying faster vs being on the floor, stopping still. I like the ability to choose whether I’m flying or not, and to choose a speed, which I think is a bit what was lacking in insect zoom by jaogwal. I think having this freedom gives me more understanding of the space.

For sound design I would still try to use a sound that might not be as thumping, because I think a canary is too small to make a noise like that. I might also try to find some flavorful ambience sounds and maybe a bit of music. Something to think about for the future. I think it was a very nice experience, congratulations!

Thank you! I agree that I could still improve on the sound design, with the wing flaps I prioritized clarity and not making it sound too high pitched, but it may not make sense for a canary. Adding ambient sounds is a great idea, I briefly considered adding a quiet piano tune, but was worried about drowning out other, more essential sound cues.

A good first effort! I managed to get out on my second try. For a post-jam update it'd be cool if you have to go through multiple levels.

Developer

Thank you!

I will consider adding different types of levels, for now I simply randomize the level's layout each time so it doesn't get predictable.
