very cute art style!

This game is super cute, I like the "combat" and the movement.

The top -down perspective with a large tiled playfield and big sprites gave the game an old skool overhead Amiga shooter 'look and feel'. The tracker style music helped with this as well.

It is extremely easy to pick up, but the mechanic is much deeper than it seems. One thing is to have blobs of ink behind you, but because the ink blobs stay, you can preplan an escape route (slide yourself quickly away or slide the crabs against the wall) while entering an enemy hotspot. This add an layer of depth which is quite original.

You could take this to the next level with having multiple competing Octo's or teams of Octo's in one arena, so you can drag the crabs towards each other. And have the WASD shake expel the treasures to steal while they are busy escaping. I think that would be extremely fitting as a couch game.

The mechanics were really fun to play around with, and having the guards trip over each other a bunch was great! It felt pretty slick shooting some ink to simultaneously slip away and cause a guard to crash into the wall. A bit more enemy variety would've been nice, but overall I had a fun little time with this one!

This game was really fun like no joke. I think the creativity of using the ink as both a way to get away from the guards but also use it against them is so clever. The controls felt really good too. I think literally my only criticism was when I got caught, I couldn't figure out how to get free. I mashed a ton but never got free. Fantastic job!

Developer

yeah i found this bug a couple hours after submitting, i accidentally made it so mashing power is tied to framerate, and if you're on a higher framerate than 60fps it's almost impossible to mash out :(

this game is a real treat, its really fun to juke the guards like that. i have a few nitpicks because i do genuinely think this game is a lot of fun. i think the combo of the map being as big as it is + the fact that everywhere looks the same makes it really easy to get lost and not know what part you havent been to yet, your ink puddles help but not by much. i also think getting caught doesn't really effect the gameplay much besides losing a but of time, and getting caught in the first place is hard when they are so easily dealt with. which combines into, despite the map being confusing to traverse, the obstacles were so easy that i still managed to get out with a good score. BUT, the ink is a really fun movement option and trap option, sucking up furniture and throwing at enemies feels great, i feel like a slick thief for sure stealing all that treasure. very very good game, great job!

thanks! and yeah, i agree, the level design was a last-hour-of-the-jam special. given more time i'd love to add more landmarks and make it easier to navigate. i spent the first four days almost exclusively on player controls and movement, which ended up being poor time budgeting haha

appreciate the rating!

I loved the little arms wagging around! and the mechanics were very fluid and fun to use!

i loved the fast movement around the area when entering your own ink :D

Nice entry, very slick, keep up the good work :)

This game is way too underrated! It needs a lot more ratings

Movement felt so slick, it was really great

And you have multiple options to beat the guards: make them slip on your ink, throw stuff at them or simply outrun them

Easily one of the most creative entries, great job!

Good 2D physics. Fun to slide and shoot. Ink slicks are a good touch. Well done!

I love the mechanics, very fun to slide around sucking up treasure, although I think it's too easy to avoid the guards. As long as I'm on the move it's hard to get caught. I do like the button mashing you have to do when they catch you, though.

Great game, love that you can use the oil slick to kill the crabs if they crash into a wall!

There is so much polish here, everything feels super well designed and balanced.  The slidey speed boost from spraying ink is so satisfying. And I love all of the sounds!
