The graphics were very nice and combat worked nice once I got used to it. The movement was a bit confusing as it was hard sometimes to tell if moved or not as it did not seem to update the sprites. I like how the encounters worked and enemies. The skill system was good for fighting them.

Game was nice looking and you did a good job with it.

I really dig the graphics, and though I didn’t fully understand the rules of the mini-game/fight I think it was cool, the part of it I did understand.

There might have been instructions in the too fast scrolling initial text. I think it would be good to copy it and have it on the itch page too. At least the parts that matter for gameplay. Or available in-game on a button press.

The exploration without strafing and turning on AD together with wall rendering bugs and invisible walls that I could only back through unfortunately made the exploration a bit uncomfortable.

I did finally manage to figure out that numbers 1-4 could select the various abilities. That was absolutely essential for playing the game in my opinion. I managed a few fights without even taking damage, which was cool, but also since there was no obvious way to speed up the fights… they also got a bit tedious, that is I think they are too long.

In the end I died very abruptly on my second run while I felt like I should at least been blocking. And since the game closes immediately it felt like it must have done something wrong in its calculations. Especially since some previous fights seemed to have ended before they should, but in my favor, the “the game was unfair” felt reasonable. Waiting a bit, preferably for user input after death, before closing the game would have been very good.

The enemies and their animations were really cool though. And as I said in the beginning I really like the style.

Really cool entry! I had never heard of the TIC-80 before this entry, so I actually looked it up and read about it really quick during my recording to get some additional context around this submission. It's impressive  you were able to get such a cool crawler done on this platform. The movement and everything was solid and I really enjoyed the unique combat and the art was well done.

There was some strangeness with the perspective, how it looked like there was a hallway to turn down when there wasn't. The gold goblin never gave exp/gold or attacked (possibly intended, I just didn't know if I was missing something) and the difficulty spikes sort of required some grinding to get much further.

Overall great entry and I'm now a fan of TIC-80! Check out my gameplay below

Very impressive technically and it also played pretty well. The combat was innovative though I never realized if I was approaching it the right way or not. But I think it captured the essence of jams pretty well: challenging yourself to try something unusual, approaching things in an unconventional manner.

I really liked the look, but you should be aware that the sprites you use for walls to either side always make it look like there's a corner you can turn.

I really like the look and interface of this one, despite the jabs in the opening crawl.  I struggled a bit though.

First time I skipped the instructions when I hit record.  Never found the exit, got stuck on some parts even though I should have been able to walk forward.  And the only viable way to play was spam attack or die.

Third time I actually read the instructions at the end, and figured out how to restart the game after dying.  I played the second floor a bit, but I mistimed some defends and after that my clickin' hand was sore.

Really interesting world I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the Dungeon Crawler Jam.

I loved the retro style in this game! I haven’t encountered TIC-80 before, but will take a closer look at it, as this game introduced me to it :D

Instant movement cannot go wrong, which is great, animated background (was that just a camera parameters, or some other technique?) and menu added quite a bit of polish to the game.

Fights were interesting, once you understand how to use all the abilities, but I think having some gold at the start (or going into debt!) can help as otherwise you cannot use abilities in the first fight. Also discovering that you can use number keys to select abilities was super helpful in fights.

I’m a huge fan of the TIC-80 and this entry did not disappoint! My only complaint was that the perspective felt a little strange when you had a wall on either side of you it felt like you should be able to turn down a hallway.

I also encountered a few bugs in which I couldn’t move forward but it would resolve itself if I stepped away and came back.

If you would like to watch my playthrough, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q-icuLI6K8&t=9165s

Great to see a game retro like this! Sound and style of the oldies, really surprising. Looks a bit psychedelic too!
Really nice!

Cool visuals! I really like the slither effect on the walls and floor, it makes the dungeon look alive as if data was constantly flowing through the walls. The gameplay loop is satisfying and the decisions on how to manage your cash are fun. Sometimes, while facing what looked like an open path, I couldn't move forward either.

Besides that, it's intuitive and fun. Good job!

Not being able to move forward sometimes is a bug I wasn’t able to fix by the deadline, sadly. You can work around it by moving around usually at least, but not ideal… Thanks for the review :)

It's cool to see a TIC-80 release. Thanks for that!

I enjoyed the graphics and the combat was interesting. Nice upgrade system and general game loop.

I did struggle a bit with the perspective. When being facing 100% up to a wall like that it's difficult to orient yourself if there are exits to the left or right. Other times it looked like there was an exit to the side but when turning it wasn't. Other than that, good job :)

Developer

Agreed, camera is too close to the walls… side effects from the fact that this is more like a proper Wolf3D-like raycaster and not like Dungeon Master etc. style rendering, so this is the sort of 45-degree angle projection compromise I ended up with (the hacky quick choices you gotta do in gamejams sometimes ;) Thanks for the review!

I exited the dungeon with 2346 gold. I was level 7 (upgraded the sword 6 times and the stunning spell once) and took 2752 steps, which earned me the title of "Cashier".

The game looks good, instant movement is great, especially as I got lost a bit in the last level and I enjoyed the gameplay loop of picking the best upgrades to minimize the gold spent (and I didn't do this very well), which at some points simply means to stay afloat, and not risking a death. The set of abilities works fine and the roster of enemies is cool, I never managed to kill a goblin before he fled.

EDIT : I forgot, sometimes you can't move forward and need to, I'm not sure, wait? I couldn't tell if it was intentional.

Fun one!

Developer

Nope, not being able to move is a bug and not intended… Treasure Goblins are best dealt with by generous spamming of freeze and hoping for a good loot roll for it to be worth the spend :D Thanks for the review!
