Instructions not clear, broom stuck in ground like javelin. And got my shrine maiden drifting through the continuum of time and space.

The controls are so accurate and intricate that it's funny. I tried flying good for a while, but I keep missing my spots lol. It's a really interesting game, I hope noone disses Reimu's ability of flight after this.

Realistic flight controls make for a nice challenge.

aw yes someone else thought to make a touhou plane game and it was in the same jam even

I actually haven't played many (any?) flight simulators, so learning the controls for this took a bit, but it was pretty fun to fly around once I did. Had difficulty with Marisa turning especially - I guess the idea is to start yawing left/right with A/D, roll slightly with left/right arrows to point Marisa's up axis into the center of the radius of the turn, then simultaneously/gradually pitch the nose up while continuing to yaw to execute the turn? (...now that I write it all out I have no idea how I figured that out purely by feel but it's given me a newfound appreciation for fixed-wing aircraft pilots)  VTOL flight control was also tricky (on mission 2 I missed the first goal ring and spent about 5 minutes figuring out how to back up so I could fly through it; also spent a lot of time oscillating power between 0% and 100% to find the right altitude for flying through rings) but I did crash less somehow.

That said - after figuring out the controls/clumsily making my way through the mission courses, jumping into free flight and doing low-altitude laps and sharp turns around the village and SDM buildings as Marisa felt super rewarding.

Other stuff:

  • The new version is definitely easier to control - initial version feels much less sensitive and more prone to losing control/crashing (at least based on trying the Marisa tutorial there briefly).
  • Hair/clothing movement was a nice touch, and helpful for indicating Marisa/Reimu's orientation and direction of movement.

Wow, your comment really made my day. It is such a great feeling to see the vast majority of my initial assumptions and imaginations fully realized by another soul. I mean, doing crazy high-speed low passes in the forest, shuttling back and forth through the village, and circling the SDM is exactly what I am addicted to these days.

Your guess about Marisa's turning is actually pretty precise. The clear description you came up with can immediately help the design of a better tutorial. I really appreciate that.

Reimu's control indeed requires some workaround. I am currently working on a smarter system, hopefully, that will solve the existing problems (and not introduce more new ones).

spining was the most wacky thing I've done so far, very nice pov, I really like to feel like a plane xD.
Reimu isn't that nice, she just float away and is confusing at most, camera doesn't follow her at all xD.
A little bug is that if you start at the shrine and retry, the next mission is the SDM, quite weird.

Overall, its quite good, probably some collision is missing specially with buildings, but still quite good.

Thanks for this very important feedback!

Charming concept, could do a lot with this idea, like pilotwings touhou or something. This game serves as decent demonstration of it

Despite the use of asset store content, it’s all put together quite nicely, and the comprehensive menus help with the experience a lot.

However, there is something to be said about the difficulty/barrier to entry of this title, but I can’t comment on that because I’ve never played a flight simulator before. I’m more of a car drift guy and I can barely clear a turn at medium speed, much less drift.

I tried playing with both keyboard and controller and I’m just no good at turning it seems.

Hi, thanks for your feedback.

I've recently come up with a post-jam version, which aims to significantly lower the barrier of entry of the game. I have no idea if that version really does its job now, so if you are still interested, please help me out by trying that version.

Turning can get a little tricky. For now, speedy sharp turns need to be planned seconds ahead of time, or you can rotate the body to cancel unwanted velocity manually using thrust for much faster turns. Adding more drag into the air can also help, I'll be researching that.

I like the expansive scenery and the feeling of flight, I think that's really well achieved! Marisa works better than Reimu IMO because of the camera. If you allow me a suggestion I think limiting the amount of turn you can add would help, because it's easy to spin out of control so the game becomes difficult to control. In any case this is a very cool game concept!

Thanks for these great suggestions!

I think why I, and a lot of others it seems looking at the comments, struggled with the controls was partially because the 'flight' didn't match our expectations.

At least, when I imagine someone from the Touhou series 'flying', I imagine it as a lot snappier and more responsive than this. Like, in the Bullet hell games, you can stop, hover, and instantly speed away in a different direction. In this however, flight is more momentum based; you can't turn 180 and expect to keep your speed.

Still, after a few minutes I kind of got the hang of it and it was pretty fun. One thing I think its missing is sound; if you could add like subtle sounds of wind moving past and water moving I think it'd really add to the immersion and make it feel like you were really flying around Gensokyo.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for sharing this interesting point of view. These days I have been constantly struggled to try to find things about controls to optimize, your feedback surely brought me a much broader understanding.

I agree that sound effect is very important. After all, no flight sim is complete without its constantly roaring engines. For touhou, I believe some subtle environmental sounds might be sufficient.

I struggled a lot with the controls, and failing the tutorials over and over just frustrated me. Nevertheless I think this is a really neat concept!

I frankly think this game's camera makes it nigh unplayable. It's just frankly painful to play.  Especially as Reimu

Developer

Thank you for your feedback. If you are still interested, press "c" can toggle the hidden fixed camera.

The normal camera is actually following tightly to the character as well. If the view is rotating weirdly fast, that is because the character has been following violent input commands. Gentler control might be the solution, like never hold down a key for more than 1s or push the sticks to the far end.

Reimu's camera does require some workaround. I believe it is constraining the player's speed too much.

the concept of freeflight through gensokyo is an incredible thing, so props for that alone. the controls are reaaaally difficult to use unless i'm missing something, though.

I agree completely; a more relaxing take on Touhou is really cool to see in a fan game, especially as a flight sim since basically every character can fly, haha. I also struggled a bit with the controls, especially on Marisa's second mission which needed some sharper turns.

Developer

Thanks for the kind words!

In case you missed some control, this game uses 8 keys, WASD ↑ ↓← → , or both joystick thumbsticks to control.

But chances are that you didn't miss anything. If it feels hard to control, to some extent it really is. Characters in this game have exceptionally great motility and are very sensitive to inputs. These features made stunts like this possible. (Normal operation for danmaku battles I guess😂)

Adding more beginner-friendly characters may be the reasonable next step. But for now, my suggestion is to try to be very gentle on the sticks or keyboard. You will get the hang of it soon!

raymoo and mawio go  WAAAAAAHAAHAHAAAAA also the world turned invisible pretty cool game

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing. Steering the character with a keyboard could be a little hard, since analog control is really needed to fly. Could use some optimization.

i was playing with a steering wheel
