One of the best games of the jam for sure, but not without it's problems.
The game feel is really well done, and the visuals/sound is good.
I don't enjoy the difficulty scaling that much though. It rapidly moves from almost boringly easy, to too much going on. This doesn't seem to be a linear progression, but rather random spikes.
In one session I think I survived about 10 minutes. The first 5 minutes there's almost no challenge, since at most there will be 1-2 enemies on the screen. After 5 minutes, more enemies will start appearing, but at random spikes. I'll still fight 1-2 enemies at most, and then I get swamped by 6-7 all of a sudden - which I manage to beat, and then it seems to be back at 1-2 enemies for quite some time.
The problem with 6-7 enemies is that the colors are so diverse and intense on the screen, and so many projectiles moving so fast that it's very hard to process what's going on. It's no longer a challenge of 'can i beat this', but more of a am I biologically fit and young enough to process all of this.
Still think the game is pretty good and rating it highly, just tryna leave some constructive feedback as well.
Many thanks for playing and posting your insights.
The progression is largely linear with the exception of the enemy gen rate which is exponential, partly to ensure finite playing time and partly to allow new players to find their way. I sacrificed difficulty options to meet the jam deadline :(
There is however some randomness in the allocation of each upgrade type which is intended to offer a little replay variety since distribution affects strategy somewhat. The upgrade gen rate is constant but in the late game you have to juggle harder to continue gathering new upgrades whilst doing battle :) My guess is the spikes/lulls you see come from certain upgrade type biases affecting the balance.
It's true that if you last long enough it's complete mayhem ;) Thanks again for taking the time to give this feedback.
Really nice game. Movement feels nice and i love the look of the powerups connected to you.
This is my personal favorite so far. Gameplay is really engaging, animations are smooth and the sound design is very good. I could maybe see the game being a little bit faster but it's just personal preference, all in all great job!
The effects are sooooo good! It took me a while to understand I had to hold still for the power-up to connect to me, but other than my little learning curve, the controls feel tight, and the smooth movements are really appealing. Great job!
Really well done game.
Difficulty inceases little by little untill I realise things just got crazy :)
Uhhhm I reviewed 30+ games and this game is the most fun I've had. The controls are perfect, the graphics are simple but very well executed. The game is smart, balanced, beautiful. Even the music is nice.
You did a great job, there. I started to really love my complex battle entity before I died. You created emotion, that's impressive.
Keep doing that kind of stuff. Wow.
Fun game! I like all the powerups. It builds and really starts to get chaotic toward the end as there are lots of enemies and powerups and you're zooming around shooting, which I love. I was a little too fast for my own good lol, but I think I would just need to get used to the controls as I don't usually play these types of games often.
