ETRIAN OD- (i am immediately shot and left for dead)

Okay, in all seriousness; I adore this entry! I'm really impressed that you made an entire dungeon crawler with just the RTP plus the 3D plugin. I'm also more than a little biased because I loosely re-created my Etrian party in here, haha. (Also, regarding the images used when showing the character portraits on creation - are those upscaled with waifu2x or something? The artifacting is a bit odd to me, but it's nothing major.)

The classes feel like what they're supposed to, as far as I see - I used a Spellsword (big damage, and good trash mob clearing, very key to whittling down the final boss down fast), Knight (I feel like his very existence just soaking up damage warrants a spot, but learning smite and fortify all gives him things to do which is always neat - and unlike in aforementioned dungeon crawler game smite here actually does something instead of just chip damage), Ranger (deals good damage but nowhere near Spellsword - excellent buffs and debuffs that sync well with it though, and good trash clearing, too), and Cleric (Uh... heals, heals, and more heals, and nothing else until you learn judgement, which doesn't hit that hard and costs too much precious TP that I could be using on healing- it's basically what anyone who chose this class signed up for, really.)

I do have to say that the phantom boss in the first area didn't disappear after defeating it, which was a bit disappointing, but ah, well. Also, I initially tried playing this with controller, but there doesn't seem to be a button bound to confirm? (Which is fine, I have a working keyboard, so no big deal.)

I have to admit that the first mimic I encountered oneshotting 3/4 of my entire party with arrow rain before I could do anything was kind of unexpected but slapstick comedy levels of hilarious, so even if you didn't intend it you get a comedy rating for that. I sort of panicked before realizing that it just... didn't do anything but spam heal after that? So I had the knight beat it to death with smite. Haha... that's not going to stop me from opening everything, though.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, i upscaled the RTP with waifu2x. Initially I wanted each class to have 2 portraits each, but I havent got time lol.

Judgment and Ranger's Silver Arrow are meant to be defense-ignoring skills, but me changing the balance ends up making monster's defenses not matter as much, so the damage seems underwhelming.

About the phantom boss, that's one hella major bug to escape my check, I'm very sorry. Also I only tested this with keyboard and mouse, not controller. I'll take note of it next time.

Thanks for playing, and thanks for the feedback!

Congrats on submitting the game!

As chance would have it, I had the urge to check out some DRPGs lately, but I have little experience with them as Shining in the Darkness is the only one I've completed.

I found yours to be just what I was looking for. A short, sweet little intro and hub, then crack on with the dungeon diving. I think that's what puts me off a lot of the big name ones like Etrian Odyssey and the SMT games - too many mechanics having to be explained at the game start and bundling out a crappy story I don't really care about.

This game is very accessible and featured a lot of familiar classes to choose from so I found I could get going right away without too much bluster and faffing about. NGL I just had to pick the Dominator class to see what that was about and - oh my days! I am almost three weeks into a masturbation abstinence and Lilith threatened to bring that to a sticky end right there and then.

Ahem... moving on, I really liked the dungeon exploration, it's nice and neat and well done, rewards going off the beaten path to find treasure and has a decent variety of enemies. As others have said the balancing needs addressing, but other than that I applaud you on a great effort here.

I am curious as to what plugins you used to achieve the 3D dungeon aspect and 1st person view exploration? I would like to try make something like this myself but don't want to fall down a rabbit hole of looking to mix and match plugins to achieve what you have done here. If you could please tell me what plugins specifically you used for the 3d dungeon and perspective, I'll happily hunt for those myself and get started on a new project.

Anyway, all in all a sterling effort here and some good old fashioned grinding fun. Thanks for making the game!

Thank you for your review! I'm cooking an update with lots of balance change and bugfixes, so stay tuned!

As for the plugin, it's MV3D by cutievirus (https://cutievirus.itch.io/mv3d), it makes tilesets 3D and has settings for first person perspective. If you're more used with MZ, there is also the MZ3D version.

Great, I'll for sure look forward to the update. From a technical standpoint the game was pretty sound. The only bugs I ran into was the locked doors having the animation that the player opened them when they were in fact still locked.

The rebalance will be nice though. I was nearly crying at the start when I would just pray my mages would survive to get off level 1. It was pure RNG if they would get hit and thus one shot by the weakest enemy. Once I hit level 3 with my spellcaster Ezekiel, I could spam the fire all and just wreck everything in sight in one cast and he was the fastest party member and usually acted before the enemies too.

I smashed everything until the boss, where he was doing triple the damage of my Knight's max HP in an attack all spell which leads me to believe I need at least 20 levels to beat him so that's where I quit for now.

But it was a super game and I'll give you a follow and look forward to that update - I want to see where this goes!

I had a blast with this! Custom party dungeon crawlers are always a win, and the shop balance was surprisingly solid. The foundation is great. I really liked the hub system with Harold. There are some hiccups with the party balance and skills, which are completely understandable given the short jam. If you’re planning a balance update, the most notable issues I found were: Rosa “Heal All” targets enemies, and the bat drain skills also heals the target. In terms of balance, the ranger is a menace; absolutely sweeps with arrow rain!

I encourage people to try it. If anyone has trouble with difficulty, get the chad ranger in your party.

Thanks for the review, glad you're having fun! The balance update is definitely planned!

I got so excited because the premise was a lot like Etrian Odyssey! Sadly I tried to heal my Fencer by walking back out to see Harold and the same dialogue repeated that he said before we embarked on our journey.

Whoops thanks for the report! I haven't had time to test, you should still be able to rest, right?

I think so. Though Harold said I didn't need to Rest so I am not sure.

Developer

Just updated the game if you want to try again!

Sweet! Let me delete the old version first

Tried again. Enemies are pretty rough.

Developer

Yeah, I haven't much tested the enemies yet. I'm planning to get a balance update out.
