How does your entry fit the theme?
This entry looks at echoes in two ways. One being that the game's story is about the "echoing" thoughts inside of one's mind. The other way is in the gameplay and focuses more on the idea of an echo as a "similar but different copy" rather than a sound.
What would you like feedback on?

Wow, I must say, I personally adore this game! It feels like a breath of fresh air to me. Everything about it showcases a sense of uniqueness and specialness. The music used is delightful and perfectly complements the game, while the art style, with its distinct pixel art, stands out beautifully from many other pixel games i've seen (both in this and outside the jam).
One aspect that I truly love is the mechanics. I find it incredibly enjoyable how the game gradually guides your hand in the beginning and then allows you to connect the dots based on what it has taught you. For instance, the idea of only your younger self being able to traverse thin bridges but unable to jump, necessitating a switch between the two characters, is brilliantly executed and adds a solid layer of enjoyment in figuring out the puzzles.
Moreover, the writing in the game is splendid! Personally, I enjoy it a lot. However, I do have a suggestion to enhance its presentation. Perhaps incorporating it into a storybook format or even having it whispered in your head by a shadowy figure that follows you could add an extra layer of immersion. This idea just came to mind, so take it with a grain of salt, but it could potentially elevate the overall experience.
I did encounter a minor quirk where I unintentionally triggered a jumping dance party by hitting blocks underneath and holding the jump button. Aside from that, the game is remarkably free of bugs, which is a pleasant surprise. (for a 3 day jam just amazing how bug free it is! I can't express it enough haha)
If you have plans to expand this game (which I highly encourage, as it possesses a lot of potential), I would recommend introducing more complex puzzles and implementing a pause menu. Additionally, adding some flair to the main menu, which currently feels a bit unfinished, would further enhance the overall presentation.
Overall, despite a few minor nitpicks here and there, this game is an amazing little puzzle platformer! I genuinely hope it evolves into a larger project because the potential it holds is truly remarkable. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you very much and I appreciate the thorough feedback!
Your review really covers all the bases and will be great reference for future development! So far I've fixed the jumping and added a pause/settings menu and plan to add and polish many more things before updating the game after the review period ends. Great review all around!
this is a very good game!
the way that it introduces the mechanics and progresses in difficulty is perfect. The main mechanic and its implementation was done well. I loved the short story that you integrated smoothly into the gameplay. The puzzles where a decent challenge although it was sometimes hard to tell what was going on with the bridges. the only issues I had was with the jumping. there's a mechanic called 'coyote time' that is often added to games of this type, its basically a few frames of grace where the player is no longer on the ground but can still jump. I think if you add that, the movement will be a whole lot more satisfying.
the character sprites look great and it pays off because the focus is on the player. the environment could have been a little bit more decorated but that's not a big issue. the music is perfect for this game.
well done on completing your first game jam! I hope you do more jams because you have a good understanding of game design and you are only going to get better :)
+1 star for using my fav game engine.
An absolutely brilliant review, thank you!
I've been offered up many suggestions by others to improve the jumping yet you still managed to provide even more useful ones and I'll be certain to consider all of your critiques in future development.
Also GameMaker is wonderful, it's my first time finishing a game in it. I've mostly worked in Unreal in the past and never realized just how much better life can be in an engine that isn't dreadfully confusing and resource heavy at times so I gotta agree with you there.
Yep, jumping mechanics can be a whole subject on its own , GMTK has some really good videos on this. GameMaker is especially good for jams like this.
That was a nice and relaxing experience, I was worried it would not become challenging enough, but I was wrong, it required some thinking and concentration at some point, well done for that. I would say that the link between the states of the character and the fact that we can go through platforms and walls is not obvious enough, maybe some transparency or another texture could help for that. Other than that great work, especially for a first game, you can definitely be proud of the result!
Thank you that's incredibly kind!
Yeah I had initially wished to make the bridge look more old and worn down along with a breaking animation for the future self but spent all my time on the artistic side learning how to create a half-decent walk cycle lol. Thanks for the critiques, they'll be very useful as I continue development!
If you ever made a full game, I think this has potential for a bigger game, you can do more with the age mechanic and things being different now as opposed to the past, like object don't exist anymore, but you can go back and use them; things that you remember wrong, as you know many people see the past with nostalgia glasses that don't let them see its flaws.
As for the current version of the game, I think that fact that you can hold the jump button and keep jumping is a bit off, I fell off a pit a couple of times because I was not expecting my character to keep jumping; and in one part, I pressed a switch/button, and I wasn't sure it did something because the light didn't seem to change to be walkable, it did, but it was hard for me to see at first because the change was very small and the light was off-camera when I pressed the switch, so I got stuck for a minute. Also I would like to be able to jump with the UP arrow, that would be a bit easier for me at least. Other than that the game was amazing, loved the message, I really enjoyed myself, keep it up!
Wow these are amazing suggestions and critiques, thank you!
I had considered a couple of the things you had mentioned but the "nostalgia glasses" approach is really interesting, I hadn't considered that one at all. You're critiques on the jumping are particularly useful and your statement on the first button puzzle is an astounding critique considering that was when the mechanic was first introduced, I should've made the light change far more visible. I'll be certain to keep these in mind in possible future development.
cool, glad I could help :)
When you extract the game, the files scatter everywhere, it would be better for the files to be inside of a folder.
I like the artstyle, the options in the menu should have some visual effect, like hovering when you point them with the mouse, or change color or transparency, the music is good and i didn't find any bugs, also a pause menu would be needed.
If you go below a block and hold jump you will do a weird jump dance.
I liked the writing, i guess the only thing i didn't understand is "not being true to yourself" and "hardly the person you should be", i mean, i can only speculate, but maybe adding some power the old self has that the present one doesn't would help.
I think collectables for this game based on the world/time you are would be nice.
Anyway, this was a great job for a first released game jam, i'm looking forward to see what you do in the future!
Thanks for the thorough feedback, it's very helpful!
Yeah I've definitely noticed after downloading everyone else's games that I should've put it into it's own folder lol, I'll be sure to write that down before I forget. I never considered collectibles based on dimensions for this game but that sound like a fantastic idea, I'll definitely be taking that into consideration for future development!
The age changing mechanic was pretty cool, congrats on your first game! :)
Thank you!
Very impressed by this! I really like how the intersection between gameplay and story (as in the gameplay reflects how the character feels in the story). Some good puzzle design there too, I can see a lot of potential there.
Think the stories presentation could be changed, maybe the text is delivered through book pages or something? A way to apply context to it and allow users to focus on it. I Like the idea of an element only accessible by the older self, but I reckon the presentation may have to be something other than a bridge.
Thanks for the feedback!
And thanks for a suggestion on improving the presentation of the narration, I wasn't too fond of the way it currently is. I'll also be sure to look into either making the worn down bridges of the present more clear or trading them out for something different entirely. Overall great feedback! I'll be sure to keep it in mind when I work on this game in the future.
Could not run it, says it does not match the version, and it's a pity
Sorry to hear that, thanks for letting me know!
Could you provide the exact error text or a screenshot of the error? I'll look into getting it fixed as soon as the review period ends.
It's incredible how a well animated sprite and some fitting music can create atmosphere. It reminded me a bit of Hollow Knight lol. Aside from that, good work on those puzzles, simple but fun to play. I also enjoyed the tiny details like having a bark for when the player clearly made a mistake and encouraging them to retry. Good job!
Thanks for the feedback!
I've been greatly appreciating the compliments from different users for the animation since it's my first time actually animating with pixel art, and it's good to have validation that my excessive focus on making sure the player knew when they made a mistake didn't go unnoticed lol.
This is SOLID for a first game jam experience! The art and sounds were nice, and it felt like there was thought put into the design of the level.
At first I thought the amount of concepts being taught was too much, but by the end of the game, I felt like I had learned the language of the game and was swapping between the light and dark world and the past and present self as though it came second nature to me! It's a shame there wasn't enough time for more content, because I finished the game wanting more :)
A piece of feedback I have is that I wasn't fond of how the camera behaved. The way it lags behind the player made platforming feel kinda bad to me. I would have much preferred if it affixed the character to the center of the screen at all times, and maybe zoomed out a bit to help with determining where I want to go.
Thanks a ton for such thorough feedback, it's much appreciated!
Honestly now that you mention it, I never realized how much the game's camera bothered me, thanks for pointing that out! I'll be sure to put that high on the list of things to fix if I work on this project later down the line.
Really good for a first jam ! The jump feels a bit weird (too high) and the mechanics could be more exploited, but it works well !
Thanks for the feedback!
The jump was at the top of my list of things to fix right around the end of the jam so it's good to have validation that it does indeed need fixing. I'll be sure to keep this critique in mind if I work on the project in the future!
This was great, I love the animation for when you are changing between yourself and your echo and the puzzles are well designed. Overall it was really enjoyable
Thanks for the feedback it means a lot!
I was quite proud of the animation for transitioning between echoes since my animation experience is quite limited so it's great to hear you enjoyed it too! I'll be sure to check out your game when I have the time.
