Description
I decided to create the soundtrack for a little JRPG, probably a narrative JRPG, where the story is even more important than the game mechanics or the length of the game itself.

I also decided to make it sound retro, as the graphic from the image suggests. Not the usual 8-bit or 16-bit chiptune though, but instead something that would come straight from the late nineties, something that sounds like Everquest, or a role-playing game where the soundtrack is pure General MIDI and not CD-quality audio (so imagine the sounds coming from a Creative Sound Blaster audio card installed on your amazing Pentium computer :) ).
In my case, all of the sounds are coming from the Roland Sound Canvas VST (see screenshot).

Additionally, I wanted the game (and so the OST) to be lighthearted and playful. It can be emotional and sometimes a bit dark, but overall it should be a colorful and cute game.

TRACKS:
--------------------------
1. JOURNEYS AHEAD
The classic title track. Optimistic and adventurous.

2. LEAVING THE MEADOW
Where the protagonist leaves his hometown for the first time in his life. Nostalgic, sweet, optimistic, and fearful at the same time.

3. ACROSS THE DARK MOUNTAINS
This is where things get difficult and where a hero is made.

4. BATTLING TO SAVE A FRIEND
The final battle, where we put all that we have got, all of our levels and inventory, in order to save what matters to us.

5. THERE AND BACK AGAIN
We go back home after we won. Home is not the same. We are not the same, but it's good to be back.

Message from the artist:
Here's a little OST for an imaginary journey... and game!
Inspired by the theme of the jam: A Journey To Remember and the provided image.
Hope you will like it! :)

Theme

a journey to remember.
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The whole game/OST is a classic journey of the hero, a coming of age, from being a kid in his little hometown, to become a man and do something bigger than himself.
Something that will be remembered, and not just by him.

I really enjoyed it, cool sounds and vibe.

the rhytmic pattern of the piano at the begining of the first song give me some kof 2002 Omegar Rugal vibes(but slower) and thus some Vietnam flashbacks xD

This really gave me some Chronno Trigger vibes (I know you were not going for a full 16-bits sound, but I couldn't help it :v). The OST is very varied in tone, atmosphere and energy, while being coherent and consistent.  The story progression is very clear and satisfying to listen as well.

I really liked how you strongly remarked the accents in some tracks, and your armonic richness was sublime. it really makes the difference when it comes to make it sound natural and dynamic, and a clear example that you don't need High quality libraries to make it sound natural (Obviously the Midi sound was an artistic choice in this case )

I don't have too many more things to say, You clearly knew what you were doing and your writting looks very experienced. Fantastic work!

Thank you so much for your fantastic feedback, it made me very happy :)
Yes, it is true though, SNES music is not too different from general MIDI music after all, just slightly more lo-fi maybe because of the memory limitations. And if it gave you Chrono Trigger vibes then I am even happier!

Great work! I like that "fight theme" (4), epic melody!

A very beautiful orchestration which does not suffer from the simplicity of the sounds, because of their great variety and very good use. A very pleasant atmosphere, with really effective titles, which convey exactly the emotions that one is entitled to expect from a game OST. Lyrical, dynamic, epic, ... very beautiful orchestral effects which show a very good mastery of the orchestra. The progress of certain tracks is particularly galvanizing. The ensemble musically narrates the story presented, with perfection. Very successful.

Awesome mallets in the first and fourth pieces. I played a lot during the era you're going for so this was a great fit for me. Thanks for sharing!

I liked this a whole lot! Loved the choice of the VST- it fits perfectly with the vibe of what you were going for. It fits the theme perfectly in my opinion too- got a feeling of almost nostalgia throughout. Great stuff!!!

The soundtrack fits the description perfectly - the 90s sound design and the game plot. I loved listening though the tracks. It's dynamic, emotive and impactful.

I heard some low end clashing on the first track but it didn't bothered me that much.

Great work.

Thank you so much for listening to my little soundtrack and for your feedback!
I see what you mean. I might have done some mistakes, since I created this whole soundtrack in about a day :)
I'll definitely review and polish it once the voting ends!

very nice. the atmosphere of the music fits the track description very well. 5 unique tracks with enough similarity to bind them as one.

As you said for my submission, this also really sounds like a thematically cohesive soundtrack suitable for a video game, and the instrumentation is great!

Very cool, I like that everything from the songs themselves to the art and General MIDI fit the aesthetic of a 90s RPG. Nice work!

Thank you so much! I am glad that you found it coherent and appropriate for a game of this kind :)
