Beautiful entry, great entry!

It's decent. There's clearly a lot of thought put into the characters, or at least a lot of heart. I'm not sold on the controls though, and the graphics feel off somehow. Except for the rain, that was very nice.

Developer

Thanks for playing. Yeah the graphics are off for this style of game and probably most games in general :P It's because construct just allows me to drag and drop graphics, resize and scale them in strange ways. So the pixel density of some items is off compared to other items which gives it an odd look.

It was alright but did not feel like NES

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing. Yeah I struggled with the NES style a lot, it's alot harder to hit and make something look good for sure.

Beautifully warm story. A very cozy little walking sim with gorgeous visuals and story-telling. I appreciate that you clarified it as "NES as you remember it as a kid," this definitely hits that chord. Very interesting entry considering most NES games are typically more action-centric, but such a relaxed experience was definitely a welcome change-of-pace!

Lovely job, very very cute!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah, I remember going back to NES games I loved when I was a kid as an adult now and thinking how bad they looked :P But as a kid the colors jumped off the screen, everything was awesome :D Thank you for playing.

VERY cute, VERY cozy... but I had a few moments where I was asking myself "is this game trolling me"? Because I think the item spawned in such a way that it made me take the LONGEST path possible to collect everything. If you make the wrong guess and start walking to the right (alllllllll the way to the princess statue... which is kind of a red herring because it never did anything) and the item isn't there... you have to walk ALLLLLL the way back to the left side. And unfortunately I made a few wrong guesses, so my player experience had multiple: "i made a bad 50/50 guess and now the game's wasting my time".  Everything about this game's aesthetic and atmosphere was on point tho. Excellent graphics and colors, likeable characters, and cool CRT + weather effects and all that... but the gameplay undermined it a little bit for me.

A few suggestions: Have hints or clues where the items were lost so you get a good starting direction where to search. Even better-- Have breadcrumbs of clues from other characters so you're more engaged with the little world instead of just holding left or right until you spot the item. Have the objectives be a little more within reach instead of on opposite ends of the map too. It's been a while but I think the game Spiritfarer had some fetch quests that could be good design inspiration. And lastly, adding some extra movement mechanics, even just a run ability could solve a lot of my issues too cus at least the traversal would have been quick and a bit more fun to get from point A to point B!

Really nice presentation though and i loved how you described it like "how NES *felt* as a kid"

Developer

Thank you for playing, making a video, and your detailed response, really cool! I really appreciate the feedback :)

You're not entirely wrong about the trolling :P Originally, there was a mine entrance where the rocks are, and the pig was going to give you a pickaxe to break in. (I'm actually working on all that stuff now, once the jam ends, I'm going to make the game widescreen and remove the filters.) But currently, the only reason to go to the statue is that one of the items spawns there. There's actually a whole story with the frog and the princess, I just didn’t have time to include it. When I make games, they tend to go off the rails with added stuff and turn into something I never finish :P

As for directions to the items, I thought about this a lot, since I knew some would be hard to find, especially the frog, which could be frustrating. The only reason I didn’t add more clues is because I thought back to the second game I owned on NES Simon’s Quest and how obtuse that game was for me as an 8-year-old. But yeah, it is a bit boring walking from item to item. I think adding some kind of mechanic to make those walks more interesting maybe a non-threatening NPC you can jump on or interact with is something I'm thinking more about :)

Again, thanks for playing and for your response :)

I watched both videos. I should have made it more apparent, but if you hit the "M" button, it pulls up the letter. It's sort of like a quest helper. It shows you what item you're missing, and you can also read the responses the animals wrote to the princess. I worry now that a lot of people are missing this. I think if I had gotten the controller working properly, using the start button would have been better than the M button.

For an updated version, I’m going to fix that so it alerts the player when the letter has changed, and let them know they can view it by pressing M.

Nice job!  This definitely gives cozy and mellow vibes (also, your game page is expert level).  It's thought-provoking to see this style of game set in an NES jam.  The biggest sellers of the era seem to all emphasize quick reactions and dexterity challenges across the dominant genres -- action/platforming, adventure, puzzles (e.g. Tetris, Dr. Mario), and sports games.  A game that got your heart rate up was a success.  Nintendo only later hit on the idea that peaceful, relaxing games were also appealing, but it makes one wonder what might have been if the NES era had had games with this approach.  Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing it :) Also it's funny cause those were exactly my thoughts when the theme was announced, I just sorta laughed and was like well, it's going to be a bunch of people saving the princess in a castle type games.... which there are some AWESOME versions of those on here, a few I favorited to come back to later. I just always try to do something different and I like cozy games so thought I would give it a try, something simple :)

And you're right imagine if Nintendo did Animal Crossing on SNES or even NES, would be neat to see :)

The art is very adorable and amazingly done, while playing it It felt like very calm and cozy. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much :) I'm glad you enjoyed it, it was fun to make :)

Making everybody happy including the princess who smiled felt good, the game is indeed as cozy as the description suggested. Mr Frog coming out of the water to chat only under rain was a nice touch.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing :) Yeah the frog is my favorite character by far, once I got him sorta swimming in the pond it made me laugh lol

I really like what the game conveys, it gives me such a strange but beautiful sense of nostalgia. It's a very calm and lovely game. The graphics are really well done, even if they stray from the NES style. Great job!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah once I got it together the little frog in the pond swimming gave me the same sense of nostalgia :) Happy you liked it!

Exactly the type of game I needed right now! Just nice and chill. I really liked the graphical style and colorful visuals and characters. Very Original. Nice Job!

Developer

Thank you so much, happy you enjoyed it :)

This game is really cute and heartfelt. I enjoyed the low-pressure, slice-of-life feel of it.

Developer

Thank you, I'm happy you liked it. That vibe was exactly what I was going for with it, a little something different :)

Beautiful game feels more SNES or early PS era instead of NES but still very cute and high quality pixel art.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing. Yeah, honestly that NES art style is a lot harder to create then I originally thought. There are so many games in the jam that just absolutely nail it to the point I feel like the game could be on an NES. After playing a lot of games in this jam though I am going to work on another project and try to hit this NES style more :)

The gameplay and artwork are great for the most part, especially when I need to complete objectives and receive gifts found in the letter but maybe include a waypoint system to guide me where to go next because often times, I have to backtrack or reach the end of the level just find stuff for different animals that I interact with. This is looking solid so far though.

Developer

Thank you for playing :)

Yeah you are 100% right about the backtracking and stuff I tried to think of a neat way to do that, but I couldn't come up with anything. Originally I wanted you to be able to go into the houses and there was also going to be a mine to go into, but I just didn't have the time, so the items are sorta just hid around the level in not very original places :P

A very wholesome and relaxing take on the theme, love the vibes in this one!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing it :) Yeah I wanted to try something I've never done before so thought it would be neat to try, was fun :)

The controller isn't working currently hopefully should have it fixed soon.

It can be played fully by keyboard though, I tried to figure out the controller situation, but I couldn't get it to work for some reason :/ it's an easy enough game with keyboard though.
