This one caught my eye immediately. The art and layout are excellent. It reminded me of Merry Mushmen products. The monster hunters/NPCs each stood out, especially with their evocative sobriquets. That is a nice touch that also makes them easier to run as a GM and easier to remember for players. My players would all want to go on a "guided herb safari," so I expect I'd have to prep that in advance. I'd love a couple example insults from Witlack, maybe just scrawled out next to the art piece. It might help for quick reference if the hex names were on the map as well as on their page reference. I hope to run this one at some point!
Thank you! I'm so happy with the positive response on Creeps!
Do not fear! The guided herb safari was there in the raw manuscript and will be back in the revised edition along with Witlack insult suggestions as well as a list of drugs PCs can buy from him, more locations in Blackfern Thicket, two more hexes and creeps!
Thoroughly unsettling! I'd like to run this one. The NPCs have just enough detail to riff off of and play them, and have a strong motivation to steer their actions. I feel like it could be easily adapted to a western setting as well.
The art is 5/5. The characters are well written and pop out of the page. Everything is concise but stills provides such details!
Let's just start out by saying the art is really quite incredible, and just the overall presentation is so top notch. The locations are all well thought out and very interesting, a lot of little details that made me smile at their cleverness.
The intro in sort of a timeline format is helpful for setting the scene, really enjoyed that a lot. There's a lot of monster stat blocks tossed in here which is good to see, Sentient Vines are my favorite :)
The Aftermath section really bookends the adventure. Helps me see as a DM where all these possible interesting locations can lead and gives me some solid ideas that help make the adventure more concrete in my mind.
Thank you so much for the kind words, may I ask if the ecology in the tower and dungeon was clearly enough presented?
(e.g that the biggest threat the vines poses to PC's is to chuck them out of the tower from a dangerous height and that an option is to lead "Bianca" out of the tower and trick her to the vines as they are way more powerful and can't technically be beaten without fire?.)
The art you made for this adventure is so good! I wanted to review this one for a while. Love the strong personalities you gave all the NPCs, well described in a concise amount of words. The whole adventure is, really. The red text marking the resolution of each location and the aftermath chapter is also very helpful. Looks like a joy to run!
Crazy fun art, I love the colour palette. Very fun ideas. I thought it was a little strange that all the NPCs had stat blocks except Pelegrine. The tower layout slaps. And yeah, I love / hate bianca. She gives me the ick and I am here for it.
Thank you! Yeah pelegrines stat block should have been there :( she was a location npc like Tristan but I had to trim some hexes for the dungeon. One of the main reasons The Basement is so cramped is due to "Biancas" spot illustration, but it took less space than attempting to describe why she uses 8d4 when kicking and punching. My big dream is that someone runs this and a group of adventurers lure Alva to take revenge on her. The bone mantis deserves it, goddammit!
Great atmosphere, love the descriptions, and beautiful art and maps. Awesome awesome work.
Amazing, grisly, and open-ended adventure design! All my critiques have already been noted by you and others, so I'll just lavish praise upon a few more parts:
The NPCs are overflowing with personality, and all feel like they belong to this place and no other.
The horrible circumstances still allow for investigation, roleplay, and some potentially heatwarming outcomes.
The title itself feels like something the Grimspoon kids would sing like a nursery rhyme.
Having a wilderness hexcrawl, a small town, a tower AND dungeon, and unique NPCs and monsters all in one zine-sized package is impressive, and I never felt overwhelmed by it. Well tuned!
Beautiful from start to finish. The illustrations suit the adventure perfectly. There is a staggering amount of useful content here.
I like that you didn't just provide a History and Hooks but also Aftermaths. The moment I read "burnt popcorn" in the description of Swineditch Circus, I felt like I was there.
There were a few places I thought the background image impacted legibility and, doubly so, I'd love to see a white background version for printing.
Love your art and the vibe of this whole thing! (And impressed you managed to fit both a hex and dungeon crawl in so few pages—I had to cut my dungeon, haha)
“The knife-clown from the circus is stealing our body parts.” Might be my favourite rumour I've read in a long time :D
Colourful NPCs (Chadwick Kingsgrave is a personal fav), and I love the Blackfern Thicket map.
Big Mushmen vibes from the look (and title), which is a good thing. It's clear a lot of work and care went into making this. Well done, Daniel!
Amazing art and premise! You pack a lot of personality into your characters with just a short line or two!
If I have one critique (attempting constructive criticism haha) I found it hard to follow who was who. There's a lot of characters here, which is awesome! All that drama and texture is baked in, but if we didn't have such a tight page constraint, I would have loved a full section to explain who all the NPC's are before we meet them. It was hard to remember where we learn about each person, and then they get referenced pretty freely after the first reference. Maybe that's just a me problem, been reading jams all day haha. It also might be easier to scan the page for NPCs if their descriptors would listed after their name, instead of the other way around. (i.e. Silverear, Narcissist flesh thing. Instead of Narcissist flesh thing, Silverear. I thought his name was Narcissist Flesh Thing for a while haha, again maybe just a me problem).
Overall I can't believe how much content you managed in such a small package! Your art really sings, and I can't wait to see more! Followed!
I love that the folks in the OSR community aren't afraid to let their art and design be raw as hell. This rules.
