I really enjoyed the idea of needing to stay back to grow stronger, but then you sacrifice a bit. I felt the challenge was a bit much, but that was in part because I felt selecting an enemy to attack was a bit finicky and would often click right next to the enemy instead of next to it. I think if there was a radius of attack that might have made it feel better. Really cool concept!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. There is actuallya sich a radius, but obviouslybuggy. It never popped up during play testingsorry

This is such a cool game. I love RTS games and this was a lot of fun to play thru! I think the balance of growing and attacking while sacrificing your dudes is a really cool idea. I would've absolutely played more of this if there were more levels. Great work!

Very cool! Well done! I'm terrible at the game though ahah

Developer

Don't worry, even I failed at my own scenario after adjusting that growing units keep their heath fraction as opposed to get heath added. It was a huge balance change which was necessary to make it challenging, but I couldn't do too much testruns. My thinking was: If I can beat it once, everyone can :D

I like the idea that your units are initially weaker than the enemy and the only way to win is to wisely sacrifice a few to make the rest stronger. Is real-time strategy a big deal for you? I wonder what it would look like if you go into the puzzle direction and made it turn-based.

Developer

It actually is. I think RTS is an underrated and very underrepresented (especially in game jams) genre, whereas I encounter a lot of puzzlers/turn based stuff in jam submissions.

Could the game be better if turn based? Probably. But my jam games always aim for something short, enjoyable and "fresh", if that makes sense

Like your idea very much! Very fun and It's harder that I think haha. I hope the tree grow faster and would love to see some UI  showing that I already select the tree.

Really cool idea.  I think with a bit of iteration you could expand this into something more.

It was really fun, it's a shame there is only 2 levels !  It's an amazing entry that you can be proud of.

That's actually my favorite entry so far, I died one time in each of the two levels but found myself challenged but still didn't think it was unfair. It was really well balanced game and loved the concept, it was kinda epic not gonna lie.  Very cool game.

Great concept for a strategy game! Would enjoy seeing more. I do think growing should heal more, but maybe that's a balancing thing. The audio sliders crash the game it seem.

Developer

thanks,

in the initial version the growth just increased max health and thus "healed" because the damage was merely subtracted from there. In that version I felt like the game was far too easy and could not get the balancing right.

Preserving the ratio felt more correct in that case as there is an implicit heal attached but not as strong.

You found the audio bug. Me too. This is super strange and maybe introduced by 4.4 as I took over some code from a previous project.

Thank you for playing!!

cool concept, cool game.

when i enter the settings menu and try to change the sliders the game freezes for me.

the gameplay is interessting, at first i was expecting to also heal while growing, but it is only "growing" my max hp, so i died the first time^^

if you guys a few more mechanics (growing new units, different units, healing, ....), this could  be a fun game.

great job

Developer

thank for playing.

as already answered:

"in the initial version the growth just increased max health and thus "healed" because the damage was merely subtracted from there. In that version I felt like the game was far too easy and could not get the balancing right."

Note that by preserving the health "ratio" there is actual "hreealing involved" but just to the degree of your damage status (half hp added if your unit is at half hp).

more mechanics and scenarios was just merely time issue. I went solo this time as my jam crew was busy.

thank you for playing and the feedback! (btw: the bug is odd, maybe introduced by 4.4, occurs only occasionally)

Big fan of the character art, title art, core mechanic, and ability to select multiple units.

Want: See building health. More levels!

There is a nice balance of strategy already. Many interesting directions it can grow. Perhaps a region where things grow faster, or some enemies can grow. If you continue with it, I think it has lots of potential.

Thanks for the fun experience!

Developer

Thanks a lot for you feedback.

Building health: absolutely, this was pushed back on my priority list and eventually did not make it - which... was stupid because its such a easy to implement QoL fix.

I originially intended to only allow growing in "fertile" regions, ie. grass. But I am a terrible map designer and this would have cost me everything to figure out wheere to put them.

No, THANK YOU for playing! My only wish for gamejams is to give ppl a short but enjoyable experience! May continue on the concept
