Fun one! cool to play pac-man in a new way, and with a story built up around it, very nice. The ghosts are pretty tough to compete with speed-wise on normal difficulty - maybe some more forgiving hitboxes would make it easier to turn corners without them catching the player? Overall, quite enjoyable - Iβll be back to try again in the future!
Thank you! The hitboxes were tricky. They needed to be big enough to prevent the player and enemy from sliding around in lanes but they needed to be small enough to make the turns. In my tweaking of them I accidentally made the enemy kill area and collision such that you could get stuck in the corners.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the game! Thank you for playing. :)
Wow great job using all the wildcards! That's super awesome. I liked the lights in the maze, I feel like it enforced quick reaction time, kind of like a temple run type of game. I think some of the art that has collision shapes could stand out from the rest of the tiles a little more? I found myself a little confused sometimes about what was and wasn't collide-able. Overall great job though! You accomplished a ton in this jam ππ½

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the lighting in the maze! I thought it was a nice twist of the type of game it is and did add an additional element of fast reaction times.
What art needed collision shape improvements? I typically make 3d games and get really scared of complex collision shapes for performance reasons, so I kept things overly simple in this game (squares and circles).
Thank you for playing! π
The way you use pac-mac idea for the theme and wildcards are really cool and smart. I found it really intense when getting chased by the enemies. The transition between scenes is neat.
Truly great work! Congrats!
Thank you so much for playing and the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the transition screen. I was so excited when I got that working. π
Nice art and sound, good game, a rather unique way of approaching the jam theme. Reminded me of old days with pac-man. I think a little guide or tutorial to know what need to be done will be good. Since, I had to wander a bit and then found the dungeon area. I don't know why, but the overworld reminded me of a game called Tobal 2.
Great job!
I am glad you enjoyed the game! Thank you for playing. :)
Neat little game, using the "pac-man universe" (never thought I'd be saying these words) is a smart way of bringing the ghost theme. Some dead ends in the maze felt a bit unfair. The overworld level felt a bit too large for no real reason, thus making the travel times slightly too long. Great graphics, I liked the use of light in the mazes, portals felt good to use.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the portals! I found those to be fun too. :)
Believe it or not the overworld was bigger at one point!! I shrunk it down thinking it was too large, and it still ended up too big. π I was really happy with the way the light worked in the mazes too.
Thanks for playing!
Cute game you got here.
Was lost at the beginning of the game and when I tried to know where to go from the reaper, he just gave me an attitude hahaha. but yeah a little guide at the beginning might be good here.
Congrats on the submission Cheers!!!
Yeah I thought him giving attitude would be really funny. Its clear now that I should have added more tutorialization. π
I definitely needed more guidance on this one. I kept ragequitting then coming back because other people seem to like it, so I figured I must be missing something.
I feel like it has the kernel of a great game, so I hope you don't mind my honest feedback.
1. At first, I couldn't find the levels. So I wandered around a lot, looking for something to do.
2. Once I found the levels, I never felt like I had any hope of winning them, even on easy mode.
3. Once I had a few pellets, the food vendor didn't seem happy but he didn't appear to have a price list.
Yeah I should have made the goals much more clear. The idea was that players would follow the dirt path and eventually see everything of interest.
The enemy ghost speed is dependent on the difficulty level. In normal and hard the enemy will move faster than you; in easy mode the enemy will move the same speed as you. The idea is that as you run around he'll be getting closer and closer to you, and then at some point you'll have to run to a teleporter to increase the distance again.
As far as how many pellets you need, it increases each time you buy a fruit. I think if you talk to the trader there is a line of dialog that can appear that will tell you how much you need. On hard difficulty, beating each level one time gives you enough pellets to win.
Thank you for coming back multiple times and trying. That means a lot! Its always really difficult to determine how easy or hard a game is when you've been playing it constantly all week. Its also hard to know what will be clear to a player. I should have done a better job at tutorializing!
Cool game, I liked the levels and the game play.
Some guidance at the beginning would have been helpful, I was talking to all ghosts and wondering what I have to do after I realized that I have to play those levels. The levels itself were pretty nice and I enjoyed playing them. With the music and tricking that red ghost with the portals made a good feeling.
The Ghost moving sound was a bit annoying after some time.
I had no performance or control issues.
One bug I found was that I was able to get the enemy ghost stuck on corners. Sometimes it seems like it βhitsβ you and everything stands still and after some time you can walk away.
Thank you! Yeah I should have made the goal a bit clearer at the beginning. I tried to drop some hints in the ghosts' dialog if you kept talking to them.
I found the ghost moving sound to be annoying too, but couldn't figure out a replacement I didn't also dislike. I ended up adding the music and a volume slider specifically to turn down that ghost sound in case it was too annoying. π
The ghost movement was tricky. In my testing the only time I saw the enemy ghost get stuck was on the player, but it usually fixed itself. So I was surprised to hear that you could get really stuck. I think I should have made the kill collision box bigger.
Cute and finely polished, impressive job !
Thank you. :)
The game is cute and it has several good elements to it. The art is simple, but solid. The sound is good. There quite a bit of polish. Fun game.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoying this so far, another great entry! I have found a bug though, when playing level 2 and the ghost caught me just as we were turning a corner. Now everything has frozen.
I'll definitely come back to play further through this one. I really like the bright (and I think safe) overworld contrasting with the fast and dark levels.
Great screen transition too! :)
Thank you for playing! I'm glad you were enjoying it. I didn't realize you could get stuck! π¨
I'm glad the overworld felt safe and you enjoyed the transition screen. I'd been wanting to do an effect like that for a while, and finally figured it out this time. :)
Came back to this one and got a lot further, got to see the shop and trading mechanism more. I only stopped because of the dead ends in the mazes. This felt just to brutal to me! I was close to finishing and didn't realise the part I left was a dead end and the ghost was right on my tail! π Still good fun though, I'd just removed that.
Oh no! I'm sorry about the dead ends! They were a bit of a cheap trick. I figured they'd be a fun obstacle that players would save for the last few pellets. On easy or normal you don't actually need to beat any of the levels to beat the game. I figured that would let people advance. I always worry my games will be too easy and then they end up being too hard! Even with difficulty settings. π
Thanks for coming back and giving it a second try! That means a lot! I loved your game this jam so much! It's been a blast doing these jams this year with you and the rest of the GWJ community. π
Haha I know the feeling. You end up getting so good at your own game it's very hard to judge what is actually hard!
Likewise, the GWJs have been such a fun and educational experience. I'll keep an eye out for what everyone continues to create next year. :) Good luck!
At first I was wondering why you decided to make the player character to keep moving even after key was released and then I found out that there's more gameplay than walking around and talking to some random ghosts. My biggest issue is the lack of communication on where exactly you have to go to actually play the main gameplay. Nevertheless it's a fun iteration of pac-man.
Thanks for playing! I went a little overboard on the overworld to hit the trading wildcard. Should have condensed it. Glad you found the main gameplay!
