While not the most original submission, it has some very clever mechanics which compliment each other really well and put you into interesting situations. For example, I may not want to reroll, because I have a gun I like, but increasing amount of enemies forces me to, since the die also acts as a bomb, so I reroll and most of the enemies are gone, but I got low stats and now I want to reroll, but the charge is low, so I have to carefully charge up the die, before I can finally reroll again. It as very cool core gameplay loop, that keeps you engaged at all times and makes you constantly switch your gameplay style.
That said, it still can use a bit of polish and balancing. In the current state I found myself being underpowered too often, turning killings of the enemies into a chore. Also enemy deaths can be made more satisfying, add some of that juice.
What really made it for me, though, was the presentation. The pixel art is great: the colors are pretty and the little low-res sprites look cute. And the sound effects are very nostalgic. Well done.
Cute and fun.
Fun control scheme, and I had a good time just playing around in the space. The SFX in particular were really effective in making the game feel proper arcade-y. Would love to see some sort of mechanic aside from the bomb that you get -- maybe randomized? -- that could be used situationally in combat.
I really like the dice bomb, but I think it recharges way to slow, and I think the game is missing some more juice. But I think pico-8 shmups like this are very charming and it had me hooked for a little while.
Man, those wasps. Nonetheless, fun game . I'm just bad at it.
Really cute game which performed great! Choosing a non-conventional control-scheme for movement was a brave decision which I did not really appreciate but overall I found the game to be fun and enjoyable :)
Perhaps it is a bit difficult to reach a dice roll but good job none the less!
Those wasps are nasty buggers, just like in real life!
Ah... another top down shooter.
There really isn't nothing wrong with the game. Maybe the enemies and gameplay is a bit repetitive but that's it.
I have a few nitpicks. The carpeting on the floor is too bright. I initially thought it was a wall. Also it is cool that your character changes when you play, but some of their abilities were more of a hinderance then a benefit (but then again, maybe that was the point of the game.) I didn't really care for the soldier and his spread shot.
Solid game! Pretty hard
Pretty fun and interesting!
Neat game! Great art and sound and a very unique and creative use of dice as a mechanic. Also, bonus points for not have the word "dice" in your title!
Very cool game! the pixel art is fantastic and the dice mechanic is very clever! also bonus points for making it in pico-8.
p.s: why frog and wasps? is there a word pun i'm not getting? i'm very curious hahaha!
no pun, just the first two enemies that were created :)
At first I wondered where was the dice mechanic then my character changed and I got confused lol Nice idea you got there.
Interesting to see a game where the dice isn't the main thing!
Really cool mechanic!
This is a very nice game! One thing I'd suggest though is making the font more readable. I did not understand the game for the first 10 minutes, and I want to partly blame that on the font. Though, I don't know how you could fit a more readable font into that 8-bit art style.
Fun mechanic, I liked how every time i rolled the dice I had to completely re adjust my playing style to match the new stats. Would've liked more variety but still a fun game.
Very fun to play, could have played forever but sadly I rolled into a gun with an insane delay and speed to rival that of a snail with arthritis.
Liked the visuals and the simple gameplay, would be nice to have more variety though. Still, very good stuff!
