I felt bad that there is no average score, because some teams aimed for all categories, not just one. So I just scrapped the results page and made a table. I agree with Mark that "Overall" is questionable, but I still think "Average" is a valuable score, so I decided to share it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SCRAPING THE DATA!!! THIS MAKES US SO PROUD!!
The game's colors are too beautiful, and the atmosphere is done very well! Looking forward to the later subtitled version!
Thank you very much! We'll try our best :)
This game was absolutelly incredible. The spooky atmosphere is pristine and both the constantly changing environment AND the small footsteps scare early on both contribute to the game feeling VERY unpredictable and keeping you on edge at all times. I played quite a few horror games this jam and this might be the only one that genuinely scared me, the footsteps subtly putting the notion in my head this game *might* have jumpscares just kept me on edge at all times, and the lighting and liminality of the whole environment just exude a crazy aura of dread. The story is also incredible and the looping themes shine in every aspect of it from narrative to gameplay. Part of me kind of wishes there were subtitles, or a way to implement a similar system, as the phone calls were phenomenal but between the static and filter it was a little hard to understand at times, but I understand it might've caused some issues with immersion as this game relies on it greatly. Still, easily one of the best games I played this jam, what an absolute treat.
It's hard to put into words how great it feels to read your words, thank you very much for phrasing that and sending us a comment and feedback! :) It means more than you would know!
We do plan to release a patch after the jam to fix and add a couple of things, hopefully subtitles, too.
Wow! Incredible atmosphere, and visuals, so tense! Amazing work!
Thank you very much! :)
As others have said, the tension and the atmosphere are the stand-outs here. I'm afraid I only had time to play through the first loop, so here are a few thoughts from that:
Thank you for the feedback! :) And you pretty much saw the whole game once you completed the loop, we only had time for one, really, despite having plans to add more variation to each run. About your points:
Thank you again for the kind words and the feedback! :)
Really impressive environment and storytelling — I feel like there’s so much to learn from this!
Those are some big words - thank you so so much, it means a lot! :)
Dang I feel harrassed. Great game! Feels like scary movie vibe.
Hahahah thank you! :D
Loved how tension is built through the art style and sound, without the need of the usual jumpscares every corner. It's really immersive and it feels like being inside a weird dream.
Thank you very much! :)
I personally dislike jumpscares a lot, they take away from horror in a big way the way I see it, especially in mainstream horror. Jumpscares should be a byproduct of an already oppressive and immersive environment, rather than the cheap overused go-to-tool that they usually are sadly. If tension works well, the player can get scared by even the sound of a twig - then you don't need to use jumpscares at all haha
What a beautiful piece you have there, good job! I really like it!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed our work!
Brilliant graphics and lighting/shading. Great art design and colour palette. The audio was highly impressive, but really needed subtitles. The writing and voice acting were amazing. Nice level layout too. Excellent creepy atmosphere.
Collisions all work. I found no bugs. Being able to run would've been nice. Clearly showing what is interactive made the game far less tedious. I'm not a fan of having to mouse over every single object to find what you can actually click on.
Is there no way to break the loop? Does the game repeat endlessly?
My take is that this is limbo. The voice maybe that of someone the player character harmed.
Thank you for your kind words and feedback, they're very much appreciated! :)
I personally believe the movement speed is a bit too slow sometimes, and the main reason behind this was that the whole game was designed under the span of a day so that we would have as much time as possible to execute it and make it happen - which resulted in some bad design choices, such as the staircase filled with 3 long voice lines for which the only solution by the time we discovered that as a problem was an artificial slow down to the player (which to be fair, is not really a great move or fun mechanic, though i guess it works as a last resort haha).
I'm glad the prompts lead you as intended, it was critical to get the player's attention as much as possible given the house's shifting nature and the overall dark environment.
And no, you cannot break the loop and the game is repeating endlessly as intended. :) + you are absolutely correct with your assumption.
The protagonist is stuck in an endless limbo of repeating forgetfulness and rediscovery of love, joy, pain, regret and powerlessness. The voice on the phone is the ex lover of the protagonist who, despite how much he loved him, grew emotionally and physically tired of taking care of the protagonist, especially once he was hurt by him due to his (purposefully unnamed) conditions. The house is quiet, has a bunch of boxes and no sign of life as the caller had left long ago, leaving behind only a few hints and pieces of memory. Every time the loop starts, the protagonist, much like the player for the first time, discovers all there is visible and audible, but something much deeper, much darker, and much more tragic that one cannot grasp as clearly as a picture or rose in a room also surfaces. The player's realization at the end that the game has restarted is unique, as the protagonist does not have that luxury, however it is fun to read and hear from multiple people that they were unsure whether the game ended or not. That was semi-intended, as the confusion it harbors fits with the confusing nature of the house, its caller and protagonist. :)
I like the connection of the narrative and the theme of the jam. Also the shader and the visuals in general are great!
Thank you <3, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Wow such a beautiful ambiance you've created. The color palette and shading is breathtaking and the audio really adds to it. I enjoyed playing this!
Thank you for your kind words and feedback, they're much appreciated! :)
Could not play with audio on the first time because I got really scared when I entered the garage and heard footsteps behind me lol. Played deaf for a bit and then replayed it with audio again. Glad I did great game. Kinda scary.
Is it about dementia?
Haha that is fun to read :D That little sound effect was amongst the last additions and I'm glad we added it!
I didn't outright say what condition(s) the main protagonist has because I wanted to avoid misrepresentation of any serious conditions since I did not have enough time to do ample research, however in general I would say the protagonist has memory loss and anger management problems which are way out of their control.
The game is well polished, and the vibe fits the environment I think. The artwork and is awesome I like the way things are displayed.
Thank you so much! :D
Wow, the aesthetics and atmosphere are really impressive. There is a lot of love that's been put in to this entry and you can feel it when you play. Awesome work, I hope you keep up making these types of experiences.
Thank you very much for your feedback and your time, your words mean a lot to us and they're really good to read. :)
Awesome job! Got hooked real fast! The story and presentation were so good! The only feedback I had was minor like other users mentioned regarding subtitles and dithering but overall, you nailed it!
Thank you very much, we appreciate it a lot! :D
I have no idea how you managed to produce such a masterpiece in such a short amount of time. Probably the best game I've played so far. It's a shame it's gotten so little reviews so far.
But if I may add some tips, making the threshold/dithering texture mapped to the world space instead of the screen space can make the effect a bit easier on the eyes. Also, adding subtitles, at least in some kind of settings/keybind would be nice in my opinion.
But these are basically just details. Great job, i loved every second of it.
I am beyond humbled, we appreciate your feedback more than you'd know. :)
Thank you so, so much! And yes, you are right and thank you for the tips as well! After the voting period, I plan to release a patch with some fixes and I'll experiment with the subtitles.
my favorite game so far, which perfectly captures the theme of the jam. i like how it unravels in the end.
In Classical Greek, the word lethe literally means 'forgetting.'
Wow, big words - thank you so so much! :D
And it's great to see someone caught the connection between the title and its Greek connections. You're the first one we know of haha!
<3
Woah! Your game is so artistic. I loved the narration (but wouldn't mind the subtitles) and lighting! Beautiful entry!
Thank you so, so much! :)
And yes, I agree with you on the subtitles - they would have helped a lot especially given the distorted nature of the lines, but sadly we ran out of time to implement something like that. Maybe post jam ratings, haha :D
Seems interesting
Thank you! :)
