This is fantastic for one reason it ACTUALLY tries to get people to just have fun and try to enjoy the music while also getting people interested in it.
But you could go a step further maybe have way for people to record there own performances and share it with other people who are playing the same game it both grows a community and gets people to try and play some music themselves, hell why stop at the piano you could do this with other instruments as well the skies the limit here.
Also having a sense of humour was also a great selling point awesome little game wish there was more though.
Spicyyyyyyy game! Nice use of the letter Y, also very dramatic scale-ghost-progression. I was wondering about a scoring system (how would you even do that for improvisation algorithmically!), but I liked that you addressed that in the story. I think I'm going to open a DAW now and make some music ;)
Awesomesauce! Really funny, although it gave me a weird "wait, am I high or something" type of moment when the E major scale came up and I read the letter "E" on the D sharp note :D I laughed ot loud when the band leader admitted he didn´t have a scoring system. Funny writing and a nice ending to the story!
As a musician and pianist who dabbles in jazz (and who also made a music game) I got a real kick out of this. Nice little backing tracks and a really funny story. I love that the evil piano player gets a happy ending after straight-up murdering a man in the venue. The dialogue and note made me wonder if you could make some sort of music mystery game with this concept…
It was very disconcerting trying to play using the keyboard keys - I kept forgetting what did what, and it was very cramped. But it works well enough for the game, which I think could be a fun educational tool. I teach piano lessons to young children and this reminded me of the silly game we let them play :) If you added some more mechanics and a more in-depth exploration of some of these musical concepts, I think you could take it a lot further. As of now it’s fun, but mostly just shows you a few scales in order. (Note names would be a good start! So would exploring some different styles of jazz.) I also agree with Oli that MIDI integration could make it a lot smoother. I’d love to play this with a real keyboard.
Anyway, this got a smile out of me. Nice work!
*Note: I’m actually glad you didn’t get a scoring system in because I don’t think there’s any way you could judge an improvisation that would feel fair.
Thanks for playing! I agree the keyboard keys are sometimes not too easy to use, I think using left click on the keys plays better. I'd love to expand the game for more input options, jazz styles, and scales. Also glad you enjoyed my ridiculous story! Overall glad you enjoyed means a lot coming from a musician and teacher!
I enjoy anything that teachers me stuff about music as I'm really bad at it but enjoy it. Does the ghost ever come from the "haunted" piano? I kept playing to see, but never saw it.
I really enjoyed jamming along in this game! It's been years since I touched a piano and my recall of music theory is spotty at best, but man this game made me want to pick them back up again. Love that you marked out all the notes for scales, because I did not remember any of them but with the game's help and the really snazzy backings you chose, my baby's first improv could at least be in the correct key, haha. Also, the writing where you rib yourself over not scoring the game made me chuckle, but I think scoring was fully unnecessary anyway - the fun in this game comes from the mini story and the freestyle jamming. I think you've made something really special here!
Professional pianist here, this was a fun little game! You chose good backing tracks and it was fun to jam for a little bit. And the way you incorporated the arabic scale was really funny! Main piece of feedback would to add control customization, just because the keys on the computer keyboard are very close together. And heck, if you want to MIDI input would be fun, and could potentially make this an even better education tool than it already is. Well done!
Love this game! It's a really simple, guide the scale improv sesh that's super accessible even for people who aren't familiar with any jazz scales whatsoever. I had fun just jamming along anyway... I bet some of my students would enjoy this play-by-colour style game~
The first thing that came to mind when I heard the theme was - musical scales, but I thought there was no way I could actually make a game centered around them that's both fun and visually pleasing. But you did just that! Congratulations!
I enjoyed this so much more than I should have, I had a smile on the whole time I was playing. Reminds me of the Jon H Benjamin album :) Very creative take on the theme
Did not expect there to be a story, genuinely made me laugh. Had a good time with my terrible improv.
