How does your game fit the theme?
In most games, you know which character you control and you make it interact to reach your goals. In The Soul of the Party, these roles are reversed – you don't know which character you're controlling and your goal is to recognize them by your actions!

Good theme idea and I enjoyed playing it felt very puzzley.

One thing I would fix is the color palette which feels a bit off

Well done!

Fun game! Felt a little like Where's Waldo. I was very bad at it but I was able to do it on Easy mode okay.

Developer

Thank you :) It is very much like Waldo, we talked about it a lot when making the concept.

I like the surreal aesthetic of this! Controls were a bit hard to understand though.

Developer

Thank you :) we definitely could have done a better job in explaining the controls

The End of Evangelion meets an ABBA concert

Really vibed with the music and theme of this one, great job! Big fan of the slightly surreal aesthetic too.

I loved the concept. What a lovely idea to put the identity question into a light-hearted dance game. I didn't understand the controls at first, then went backt to the menu and there the explanation lay bare in front of me. Good stuff, I'd be happy to see what you would make of it with more time. Maybe after the jam?

P.S.: Solid beats.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words, we are actually thinking about working on it some more :) I'm glad you liked the explanation of the controls, we struggled with them perhaps not being explained clearly enough.

Submitted

I thought they did not stick out enough on the main screen. Maybe a few tweaks on the visuals will do the trick?

Developer

Sorry I guess I misunderstood your comment. Yeah, the layout of the main menu could definitely be improved..

I absolutely LOVE the music in this game, for real I sometimes open the game just to listen to it for a while. The concept and the art are also amazingly great.

I can only criticize that the characters were so small that sometimes it was hard to follow the action.

Still, great game and congratulations!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, the music really does bring the atmosphere to another level :) I agree that some of the dance moves are not as visible as they should be, but we also wanted to leave some space for the background art. If only we had more time and we could play around with it some more :)

Submitted

That's quite an extended feeling all over the developers, but we have to be proud of doing the best we could with the tools we have ^^

Developer(+1)

You are definitely right on that note :)

Submitted

That's a really abstract game for me

Developer(+1)

I'm not sure if this is a compliment, but I'll take it! :D

Submitted(+1)

Wish this game was longer! also nice music! great work

Submitted

i kinda didnt undestand how to play (cuz im dumb) but i liked visuals, music and concept. a tutorial would be helpful tho :)

Submitted

oooo this is clever, although more challenging than i expected. love the premise!

Submitted

the concept is so unusual, i love the hypnotic moves and music!

i wish that the search for the right dancer was a bit more challenging after you figure out how to play, but i understand that is not so easy to do in a 48 hours time :)

that was unique experience indeed!

Submitted

I like the musics and the visuals, but the gameplay was less engaging :( I didn’t really understand how to play at first, but then I just started to spam the same button and it was nearly a guaranteed win. Congrats on the submission tho, you have a very distinct style !

Submitted

I like it, but it took way too long to understand what was going on. I think just telling the player how the inputs work might improve this by a lot.

Submitted(+1)

I managed to beat it on impossible :)

Developer(+1)

Me too! :D Looks like we overestimated the difficulty...

Submitted(+1)

Love the catchy music, the expressive art style and the clubbing mood it creates!
The concept is interesting and unique too.
Gameplay-wise I found myself hammering down A all the time and just keep an eye out for that salute move, which is not the most engaging :D
Overall I like it!

It's a bit confusing as to how it actually works, but I _think_ your action get queued up and then executed in fixed intervals? I understand that you can't just make input instant because, well, then it would be trivially easy. But it was something I had to figure out before I understood what's even going on. When you know what's happening, the game makes a lot more sense, and it's quite a cool idea. I wonder how well it would scale with more mechanics, because right now the already mentioned two input strategy is just foolproof and easy.

Developer

You are exactly right :) Glad you figured it out, though it definitely could be explained better. I think the next goal in development would be to introduce more NPC behaviors that would make the most trivial strategies harder or impossible... or make it a multiplayer game!

I absolutely loved playing this game

Developer

I absolutely love that you absolutely loved playing this game!

Love the idea but couldn't save and understand the dances with the inputs

Developer

I'm sorry to hear that, maybe we didn't explain the controls well enough. The idea is that you perform different dance moves with different keys (it is shown in the main menu which is which) and you have to figure out which person you are. Also there is no save feature, just select your difficulty and play :)

Submitted(+1)

Love the color combinations. The game's intro and all the text work is really interesting. Would be nice if the dancers did not have the black outlines around the hair, and maybe add a little blob shadow to each dancer. And a moving/shining disco ball too would be awesome to raise the difficulty by visuals!

Developer(+1)

The shining disco ball is exactly what we wanted! Sadly we weren't quick enough for it to make it into the game

You're definitely right about the shadows. It was my first attempt at doing art for a jam so there were a lot of improvisations and imperfections. :Dd
