How does your game fit the theme?
The objective of the game is to cut the red threads of fate which joins them together. If 2 people bump into each other (or are fully joined together) then it's an automatic game over. You can also join loveless/alone people together to form lines of strife which damages people who are in love. And the component of "how often you use the scissors to cut" and "scissor cooldown time" are linked (more you use the scissors, more cooldown time).

Did your team create the vast majority of the art during the 48 hours?

Love the game looks! I had a hard time figuring out the controls at first but then had a blast! Come check our game too!

Absolutely love this game! Art and style are cute, the concept is super cool and everything seems made with care. Only missing a little more emphasis on the in-game tutorial. Five stars!

Developer

Thank you very much for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed my game!

Perhaps a more explicit tutorial is a good idea, I'd hoped to teach the mechanics through some really "easy" levels but maybe a bit of text before you begin could be implemented ^^

Inverse Cupid XD very good!

Has a little jank in where it allows me to click/cut, but the biggest props for making a pico-8 with as deep of mechanics as these. Really good!
I had to switch off pico-8 for my initial idea, because I wasn't comfortable enough in lua, so I'm just so pleased you got it to work!

I really enjoyed this, and it was fun discovering the mechanics too! :)

Great visuals (especially the title/intro scenes)!

It wasn't clear at first that the timer also caused a game over, I first ran into it during the level with like 8 connections and I kept failing without much visual info. When lovers join they change there visuals. As far as I can tell, the only change when the time runs out was the timer becomes a hashed box. Since it's part of the ui I didn't really notice it and was looking for some hidden mechanic I was missing or something. Maybe a pop-up that says Times up, or the timer shows the time you reached and flashes grey-red-grey etc. instead of just removing a piece of ui.

Thank you for playing and for the feedback.

Having a box that says "Time's Up" is a great idea! I'll definitely consider adding it after the jam :)

That was such a charming game! Great job using pico-8. Loved the visuals and the gameplay is really neat. Well done!

Thank you so much for playing!

Pico-8 really is a gem of a tool for game jams :)

a cool game. i found the fire line thing a bit buggy sometimes.

other than that, a nice looking and fun game

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The fire line was added a little late into the process but I hope to polish it after the jam ^^

Great game, it felt very polished,  congrats!

Thank you very much for playing!

I was happy to make something in time :)

I enjoyed the art style of this game! It was really cool and surprisingly easy to read despite its low resolution. I don't think I fully grasped the concept of the game though I did have fun for the levels I played.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm happy to know you enjoyed the art style.

The concept of the game is fairly simple: cut off the red threads of fate so that nobody will have love (reduce love of a level to 0).

It comes from Eastern Asian mythology where it's believed an "invisible" red string binds two lovers together. Eris is the Greek goddess of strife and discord.  I came up with the idea that Eris had a relic of magical scissors, which are the only things capable of severing the red strings of fate -- and the protagonist somehow managed to steal it long ago :)

I really liked the art in this game! The puzzles were super fun, although I think the mechanics were a bit confusing because of the cooldown on the scissors. I love seeing the PICO-8 games and all of your tutorial gifs are super nice! A lot of the later levels I managed to get through but just speedrunning clicking everything and not worrying about the lines of strife, which may be kinda cheese. The game was super comfy though even though you're destroying relationships, good work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing my game! I'm really glad you enjoyed the art and "comfy" mood :)

As for you not using strife no worries! Most later levels were designed without strife in mind, but there are a few where you couldn't solve without it. If I could expand this game I would include more levels where strife is essential.

The game looks great but the mechanics seem poorly explained. The game could benefit from better indication for what the player was doing wrong. Several times I lost or failed perform an action with no idea why.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback!

In terms of "what the player was doing wrong", I would've liked to polish more visual indicators. In the RULES on the game page, you either lost because time ran out or you ran out of power (shown on the top left of the screen) :)

Wow, I love the puzzles , cutting mechanics is so good and also drilling walls adapted to puzzles  perfectly

Developer

Thank you so much for playing ^^

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This game is dripping with style! I really enjoy seeing a PICO-8 game and I especially love seeing it with some strong art to support it! The mechanical build up was really cool to see, I didn't expect the strife mechanic a few levels in which really added a cool angle.

Thank you so much for playing!

I'm in love with PICO-8, it may not be great for bigger projects but it's the perfect tool for game jams. With limitations of colour palette and memory, it allows for a lot of creativity.

I did want to add more levels with "strife lines" and expand on that concept, but I'm happy that I at least got to implement it :)

a absolutely ADORE the style of this game!! the limited palette serves the simple designs so well, and I’m a really big fan of the sound effects, since they make things feel satisfying. However, I do wish there was somewhat of a visual indication that made it more clear what was happening, especially when lines would get close to eachother! Really fun game overall :)

Developer

Thank you for playing!

I'm really glad that you liked the style, but it's partly a byproduct of PICO-8's forced limited colour palette (you only have a maximum of 16 colours). Lines getting closer means that the people are moving towards each other (so you can tell what's going on by the position of the people over the lines).

I do plan on making changes after the jam ends and I did want to put more visual indicators (I used SFX to compensate!)

Hey that's pretty charming and simple! It was kind of clear e. g. what walls do without reading manual, and that's a lot!

Developer

Thank you for playing my entry!

I took a lot of inspiration from GMTK's video on Mario (introducing the concept in a safe environment then developing it) so I wanted the game to teach you its rules through the level design.

You don't really need the "manual" but in case you got stuck, there's the rules  on the game page too :)
